Default 400 hp

I get to drive a 07 BMW M5 all the time and let me tell you 500 hp is scary fast. Bacially when you shift the car says lets go faster and faster its hard to keep that car under 100 mph in 5th gear. So yes for your average person 400AWHP is alot to handle but like everything with time you adjust to the car and its power, but like you said its alot of time and money spent.

And don't forget an M5 have 300kg (660lb) or more than a WRX.

Default Do it in stages

Stock was fun on my 06. Then I went Cobb stage 2. Was real fun... then i got used to it and was 'bored'. Upgraded to an 18g and had a blast... now, again, I am used to it and bored. To me it is like walking up stairs. However, I have learned, for instance, how to use 1st gear because 1st gear stock is more 'usable' than 1st gear now - it can be extremely jumpy and sensitive!

Thus, I agree - this is the more intellgent way to approach upgrading in terms of learning to handle the car.

Which, btw, something to consider to adding to the upgrades for a 400whp car. Suspension to keep you tight and better brakes to stop you.
In my old 04 wrx, i had it modded well so I can accelerate and keep up with while chasing a vette through some country roads... but when it came to stopping... yeeeeaaaaaaaaaaahhhhh... brakes overheated.

Not smart on my part!

I got my car tuned on 100 octane. I'm finally at what most would consider the 400whp mark (all dynos read differently, this would be 400whp on a Dynojet). Which is a little over 500 @ the crank, and I can say I'm glad it took me a while to get there, and I'm glad I have the suspension and brakes to handle it, because no matter how mild it can look on paper or how much you think you know what to expect, 400whp is a lot faster than most people think.

Fast enough where if you're not careful you can lose traction from a roll...with AWD. Take your time getting there if this is what you want.

OK, yea im a newb. I teacher of mine was talking about his subaru sti and how he has stage 1 and wants to go to stage 2. Well (dont forget im a newb) can you just go directly to stage 5. Without having any previous stages. Or are there certain items from previous stqages you need to make it too stage 5. Im not saying im doing it, I was just curios because he'd bought up the stage thing. and i didnt want to waste a new thread. thanks... Edit: or any stage for that matter can you skip previous stages. I dont know how high they go.

I have never seen a :stage 5:

You have to remember, the "stage whatever" naming thing doesnt really tell you 100% what is done to the car. Different tuning companies have different levels of mods for what their staged package is. For instance what is stage 1 on one company, is stage 2.5 on another, or stage 0 on yet another (Vishnu's first level was "stage 0" which was a reflash only)

As for doing things in a certain order, why would there be a problem? What would stop you from buying a brand new car, bringing it home, pulling the motor, do a $10,000 longblock build, and a 500whp turbo kit?

I'm really glad I found this. I was a bit concerned that many others were participating in heavy modification to their vehicles without the slightest bit of concerns. There are many variables on the line to be considered and it was under my assumption that they were overlooked. They probably still are because a good amount of people have not found this thread but I am glad that there is a conscious effort to raise awareness about this. The responsibility of money, time, effort, and most importantly the safety of yourself and the people around you is all given to you once you decide to reach goals as this. You've covered enough so I don't think I need to go on any further. Once more, thank you for adding this.

100% I get PMs from people at least once a month similar to this: The person just got their WRX, its bone stock, they have never owned or been in a faster car, yet they KNOW they wont be happy with anything under 450whp. I usually try to sell them what would be around 330-350whp, and some suspension/brakes or something. In the end, Ill sell them whatever they want, but I try to keep them informed.

It would REAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLY depend on the driver, Not shock loading it, I would say it should hold up okish. 330 wont be a problem on a 2.0L, and I havent been seeing 08-09s losing their gearboxes despite many making well over 300whp. 350whp will start to become an issue. Honestly, hp isnt the problem, its TQ and shock loading.

Although my 07 FXT is putting down right @400whp and I am on the stock 5MT (which is the same as the 06-07 WRX tranny, but I have a 4.44 final drive, which allows the tranny to take a good bit more power)

That's my goal as well. What are the chances that we can get a similar write-up on a goal of 300ish whp? I'd like to know what I'm getting myself into before it gets a little too deep for me.

i must admit that even though i havent turned up the boost on my setup yet, i can see its only going to get me in trouble. 18psi pulls hard on a base flash. i cant imagine what mid 20s on 110 is going to feel like.
