Default New black filters

So I go to my Subaru dealership to get an oil filter and the parts guys says they got the black one and it's the new style, now does anyone know of the bypass valve rating or anything about the filter other then it is not made my fram and that it is taller?

Any pictures?

I still have a box of over 30 of the old black filters that I got when I bought a closed dealership parts department. I figure that amount should last the life of my wagon.

I believe the one that guys are using is the 15208AA160 and the corresponding Oil Pan crush ring. The vin will call for the 15208AA12A so it all depends which you want and who you get at the parts counter/forum PM.

Look up Mobil1 5w30 in NASIOC and read what you find. If you have rod knock...save up for a new engine

This. Mobil 1 5w30 shears down to piss quickly enough to make your head, and bearings spin.

Stick with the Subaru filters from the dealer as they are one of the few filters with the correct bypass pressure, and many people on here use Rotella T6 5w40 with great results.

Read the oil FAQ here:

Default 15208AA160 gone!

If you find said black filters (15208AA160) you better snag them up. Subaru has now superseded them to a 15208AA15A. (a blue honeywell filter) I've ran the black 15208AA160 on my wrx for the last 2 oil changes, they have the same pressure rating/anti-drain back.... I grabbed a box when I found out they went bye bye, set for the next 100,000+.

The only black filters that dealers stock are for H6's and the new top mounted FB oil filters. You still can't buy a wrx jdm black oil filter. If you use the filter above that is black you are using the wrong filter on your car.

15208AA130 - black H6 filter (fatter)
15208AA160 - black FB filter (taller)
15208AA12A - blue (correct by vin)
It may be wrong by vin. But by psi spec. and anti-drain back valve the 15208AA160 and 15208AA12A are the same. Only differance, half inch taller. Not only do I run the black 15208AA160, but did more then enough research between the two. Cut one apart, (exact internal design of the discontinued Tokyo Roki filters form japanland.) i also read all the Subaru info I could get my hands on. (Easy since I work for a Subaru dealership!)

But please tell me why using the FB filter will blow up my car/house/puppy...

So what you just stated is that if you use a different filter besides what is listed by the vin which is the blue filter you would be using the wrong filter. Thanks for clearing that up for me.

But please tell me where I said using the FB filter will blow up your car/house/puppy/reading skills? I stated if you aren't running the "blue" filter you're running the wrong filter on your car. It doesn't matter what research you did or what you cut open or where you work. Subaru specifies you use that filter. If you use on from the fb it is the wrong filter. You attempted to make yourself sound smart when really it was the other way around.

the wix 57712 fits the 2.5's and has the proper bpv psi

I'm not comfortable with my ability to parse this discussion.
What's the correct filter for a 2003 2.0 liter WRX?
Thank you.

You have been on here since 2004 and you don't know what oil filter to use? Kinda weird....anyway the correct filter is part #15208AA12A. That is what will be pulled up by the vin.

According to the dealership I deal with only blue filters are available for my 02-03 WRX. They have black filters but those are for the BRZ and Foresters ect

What they are are saying is supposedly the specs are the same as the blue filters just taller and not made by fram. People drool over the jdm black filter because they are supposedly made better. That is what the confusion is here. The major majority of subaru's only call for the blue filters here in the good old USA.

I'm letting you know what you were told is true. This is not new information. I was trying to catch you up to what is being talked about in this thread. Yes there is only one filter made for the wrx currently.

I've used nothing but stock filters, and have had very low insolubles showing up in my UOAs. Clearly, they're working well.
