NH: 5MT RA Gears - STi Front LSD - 20KG rear - only 10 miles since build
*****SOLD*****
We are selling our built 5 MT with RA grears. front STi LSD and rear 20kg viscous LSD. We originially built it for the Rally America Super Production class but now we have decided to upgrade to a 6 speed. We only put about 10 miles on it driving it around locally before putting the car on stands for a while (I was working in China). Upgrade was done by our crew chief - 25 year Master Subaru Mechanic at Subaru of Nashua. Stock transmission (with the STi front LSD and 20kg center diff) originally came from Subaru Rally Team in VT. They built a PGT car for a customer and then bought the car back to build it into an open class car and we bought a parts package that included the gearbox. Front LSD was rebuilt 3 events ago. Upper bell housing hole that is under the turbo was ground off (see pic) in order to make swapping grear boxes in service faster. We only bolted the gear box on in 5 places with two of them being the starter. We have the complete maintenance log for the gearbox (since we owned it when it had stock gears) and we only use Motul gear 300 and changed the fluid every event. CLARIFICATION - the front differential is a plated LSD. A homologated GRP N STi LSD (I read somewhere that these where or are just repackaged Cusco or maybe Kaaz PLATED LSD's - could be wrong.) The front diff is NOT a STI helical unit. $4000 plus shipping The RA gear set, front LSD and center 20KG alone cost ~$3800 from Rallispec today. Built gearbox
I guess I am not quite sure what your asking for so let me be very explicit about the costs just for the high end components in this box:
RA close ratio gear set with the install kit = $1625 Cusco front plated LSD = $1150 (this one has an STi one in it but this is valid comparison) STi Heavy Duty 20kg viscous center LSD = $1077 total in just these parts = $3852 (these come directly from Ralispec's website) The reminaing parts (front case, transfer case, shift rods/forks etc) are easily ~$800. Labor at a Subaru Dealership is 8 hours at $70/hour = $560 Total cost = $5212 If you want to do the same thing using PPG gears = $7293 (using Rallispec's price for a PPG gearset of $3706) If you got the exact same configuration from Julien at Lachute that's great -good for you. I am seeing him tomorrow and I will ask him if he sold the same config. -Tim |

You still don't get it. Its not just about the gearset. IT'S ABOUT THE DIFFERENTIALS AS WELL!! A limited slip differntial is different from an open differential - a 20Kg center differential increases torque resistence from a stock.
Upgrading to a 6 speed is not the easiest thing to do. It requires a lot of work - changes to either hubs and wheels or the ring and pinion etc... This gearbox is solid for those who want a good box and want the torque to come on evenly but not go through the hassle of a six speed conversion. |

But his point is valid, if you're going to compare parts, etc...stuff is dirt cheap right now and you might have trouble getting your asking price. STI front diff (less than 500 miles) for $150 (vs your +$1000 comparison) http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...5#post26008705 anyway, time will tell...I've been watching this forum for a while for my rally build (need to upgrade tranny eventually) and i've seen some great deals sit for a long time. times are tough, its a buyers market. |

built transmission
So I cleared up a point that I didnt put into the original post about the gear box. The front LSD is a STi Grp N homologated PLATED LSD - I spent yesterday afternoon at Vermont Sports Car and confirmed it since we went through the build list from the car that I got the gearbox. I knew it was a plated LSD but wasn't sure about the specific unit. Again to my clarification above - this is not a helical unit - so in my cost comparison that is why it is directly comparable to the Cusco 1.5. (I think I read somewhere that STi homologated units are actually Cusco units anyways that Subaru had homologated). Sorry for the lack of clarity on that.
As for the price for the gearsets - Ijust did a quick search and saw the REM treated sets for sale from anywhere $1900 to $1500 (not $1200). When it comes to competition parts like this we don't shop around. We get them from Dave Anton at Rallispec - his prices are good - his advice is great - and he know's his stuff when it comes to setting up cars for rallying. That's why I used his price of $1700. -Tim |
