This car is bad luck! Just driving along a gravel road and I get a flat tire. Been on this road numerous times with the X5 and no issues, and the first time with this car, I get a flat. Now all my tools are muddy as well as the trunk.
Insurance on this was up $120 a year for my dad to drive than his 04 BMW 325xi. Although that may be just him since he wrote off the 325xi.

It has a fairly large volume/ surface area for its weight. Since its aerodynamics weren't really designed for minimizing the effect of cross winds it is reasonable it might get blown around.

Door Locks
Sorry if this has been posted before, but I started reading this thread from page 350, and have googled over the past 2 weeks to no avail...
A couple things about the door locks: 1. Is there any way to auto lock/unlock them when you put the car in gear/take it out of gear? 2. When it is locked and you are inside, is there a way to change something so you can still open the front doors? 2 is probably unlikely, but 1 is a very common feature. I didn't even think about this because even my '95 I traded in had this feature. This and the stop to stop distance of the steering wheel (way to much) are the only things I can even nitpick about. Everything else I absolutely love! Now if only we weren't hitting 70 degrees in the middle of January (Nebraska) and could see some snow I could really try the AWD out =0. |

Automatic lock is not a feature that is available.
#2, hit the unlock button on the side of the door. Not sure what you mean by "stop to stop" distance. Also in Omaha No Snow - that's a good thing. Expect some later this week or up until April. |

I was surprised to find that it feels the wind more so than my Legacy did. The shape difference should have been a heads up to me, but it never entered my mind. I hate the wind issue, from years of driving a VW bug, but I'm glad I found out after the fact because it would have been one more thing to worry about. Still would have bought it, because of the AWD, gas mileage, and price. Somehow I thought it had stabilizer bars or something that would prevent wind buffeting.

Steering wheel, I can't for the life of me remember the technical term used in some specification charts. It's how far you can turn the wheel all the way left to how far you can turn it all the way right. Described as 2.3 rotations or something. The steering is nice and sensitive, but when I make a turn, I just feel I have to turn the wheel forever to make the 90 degree turn. Is that anything that I could change? And ya, they said "thunder snow" on channel 6 tonight =0 West of here a foot, we'll probably only see half that though they said. We're right on the cold/warm boundary and that'll keep the big stuff away =/ |

In general, rolling down the windows an inch or two on both sides of a car can reduce some of the side to side motion due to cross winds.

Lock to lock (180%) will require some effort; not only for this car, but for all others. You really don't want to accomplish "full lock to lock" steering as it is not really a good thing. You can't change anything as it is what it is.
Channel 6 indicates SNOW - get the sunshades out - just kidding (maybe). Rain on Friday with a chance of Snow on Saturday and maybe Sunday. Sleet and Slush is the most likely scenario. |

I don't know how ELECTRONIC power steering works. The 2.0i is electronic, right?
With tradition hydraulic power steering, there is a relief valve which kicks in at full lock. This is to prevent trying to force pump hydraulic fluid after there is nowhere left to go. Before the relief valves were universally installed, one could blow a seal in the power steering system and cause leaking hydraulic fluid and eventually the PS would fail. I don't think there is that risk any more. I still don't think it's a good thing to hold the wheel over at full lock and in normal hydraulic PS cars you can hear and feel the relief valve cycle. But there is no harm in going full lock for several seconds at a time -- for example: doing some parallel parking in a tight spot. Modern cars are protected against damaging the steering during that operation. I have no idea about what happens with an electronic PS system, but I'm guessing it can't blow seals. I would imagine it simply stops applying power. I'd love to learn more. |

For those that have the moonroof, do you notice that at night when you have the map lights on (when you open the door) that there is light that is shown through the headliner? I just saw the car that I should be picking up, and the light passes through the headliner like it is transparent. Seems like it is too thin or not coated properly?

Thanks. I took the car to my favorite trusted collision shop. There's no underlying damage, nothing bumped out of whack, so I am just going to let the whole thing drop. I can feel the bump more than I can see it. And now I have my first ding out of the way. |

Ya gotta assume there are corners cut with one of the cheapest cars with AWD and the other fine features of the Impreza 2.0i.
I saw the mystery curtain the other day! Heaven help us if there is ever a fire in the engine compartment because you can look straight into it past the curtain on the steering column. Those flames are going to come right into the cabin. I have to assume that was a quick fix for a missing part. But it sure seems hokey! Hope there is a retrofit/recall on that one... |

Sketchy in wind on Hwy?
Interesting to note several comments about the 2012 Impreza being pretty shaky on the hwy on a windy day.
I actually helped a friend of mine with the choice of a 2012 5-door. It's only about two weeks old or so and the owner likes it a lot. However, the one thing that my friend (who doesn't know anything about cars) asked me about one day was about the car being "moved around" or pushed around by the wind. We had a pretty windy day here recently and she was driving it on the hwy when this was noted. I wasn't in the car at the time so I don't know how severe this effect was. Is it that bad? Is this a safety issue, say, for an average driver? It is surprising that such a new modern car would behave this way. An old VW bus or something I can see. Can some of you guys that noticed this give a little more detail. I mean did you have to white knuckle the steering wheel for a bit to keep it on track? If it came up suddenly could it be startling enough to cause a typical driver (not a "car guy")to lose control? I just want to get a sense of this. Thanks! |

Seriously? That sounds less than ideal... |

If your engine is on fire are you going to stay in the car?
