BMW 135i hotlap Laguna Seca
I'm curious to hear honest comments on the lines "RP" (the driver) took at Laguna Seca. It just looked to me that he early apexed several turns and pinched the exits as a result. I'm not saying I know better or am faster (which I'm not) but that's just what it looked like to me. With all due respect to Pobst, of course.

hmmm crazy, the body roll, powerband fell off at 6500 which i couldve expected, but the handing he was talking about with understeer seems kinda ****ty. I had an M3 and that thing was perfectly balanced all around.

Never driven Laguna, but it looked fine to me. Also interesting to see how light his hands were on the wheel. I still sometimes catch myself in the dreaded death grip.

His lines looked spot on to me. A late apex is the "safe" line that they try to pound into your head in driving schools but it's rarely fastest.

I didn't see one early apex or pinched corner.

What I see is a very pushy car on street tires. He's just not able to open the car up as much at track out as one would with a car that has had some work done to get rid of that understeer.

Looks like a fine lap for a new car test drive. A qualifying race lap will use a bit more curb.

I agree, the lines look like the fast ones for Laguna. The only one that might look pinched is Rainey (first turn after the corkscrew) but I think that if you stay wide you run a slower time because the outside is banked less than the middle/inside.

when driving the zr1 he definitely shifts his hands around less and has a firmer grip on the steering wheel.

Its disturbing that my WRX on stock suspension with snow tires has more responsive steering. I think we're going to add a front swaybar and perhaps some stiffer springs after that. I have a feeling we can improve the mid corner handling and increase exit speed, but the turn in is still going to fall short because you can't fit big tires in the front. He says a 235 is the biggest tire you can fit without modifying the fenders, and they come pre-rolled from the factory. Regardless, its an amazing car and its fun to drive. You don't hear wind noise around the windows until you get above 120mph. |

In all honesty, 235's all around would be more fun to drive. |

Did you not notice all the red paint on the curbing at the apexes? The paint that he hit just about every corner. |

I highly doubt there is anyone on this board that could be competitive with Randy Pobst he's got quite a resume. Whatever line he chooses I would say was a fast one for the car he was in.
