road trip - disappointed
Just got back from a round trip venture from Buffalo, NY down to Charlotte, NC. My numbers are disappointing but I'm sure there's some factors that contributed to it.
1,352 miles round trip - 30.2 MPG - 62 MPH average #1 - even though my odometer appeared to be spot on when initially testing it with my GPS, over the longer run, it appears to be just under 2% off in my favor. The odometer is reporting 2% less miles than I'm actually putting on the car. I've accounted for that in my calculations & have adjusted all of my Fuelly logs by this percentage. My overall average MPG on Fuelly has only gone up by less than .5 MPG but it makes my gauge more accurate. http://www.fuelly.com/driver/sleepnmnky/impreza #2 - hills & speed. this was a hilly run with just as many steep uphills & gradual uphills to even out any down hill gains. also the average speed limit was 65 mph, some areas at 70 mph. on average i tend to drive 10-15 miles over, sometimes up to 20 miles over. there were a number of long runs that i was consistently driving 80 mph & 90 occasionally. didn't help that there was an acura playing leap frog with me all through west virginia that wanted to race. why race me? no hood scoop here. but i HAD to entertain him just a little. so the speed hurt me, speed on top of hills... really hurt me. #3 - i kept the windows/moonroof closed most of the trip. AC was on intermittently but at a low speed. i don't think this affected the MPG much at all. #4 - used cruise about 40% of the time & tried to utilize some coasting the rest of the time to try to improve the #s, it helped only the tiniest bit. overall - disappointed, but it is what it is. i fall within the EPA ranges, & someone's gotta be at the bottom for them to exist. i guess that bottom figure will always be me. i'm still happy overall, AWD averaging close to 30 mpg. sure as hell beats my last car... & i love everything else about this car. i'm done obsessing but will continue to take some advice from the group & will probably continue to be jealous of those with the good #s. i will continue to update Fuelly for those that are interested. |

Sucks that you didn't get the MPGs you were expecting. This car you have to drive it like a grandma in order to get close to the highway numbers. The last long trip (where I averaged 34.2 over 270 miles, I had to drive 65 MPH with no cheating. I did have the A/C on very low. I kinda wish that Subaru had more easily obtainable numbers like Honda has with their cars.
This car has taught me to drive more efficiently overall. Recently I was able to drive my STI the same way and get the best MPGs since I bought the car in 2008! That said, I have had my wife complain that I was driving too slow. She hasn't said that EVER. |

Not sure wtf happened with my last tank, it was mostly city driving (35-55mph back and forth, some stop lights) but not stop and go traffic. Somehow only managed to eek out about 22mpg. If the mpg stays this low I might have to get the dealer to take a look, as it shouldn't be THAT low since it's not like I'm gunning it at all or speeding up quickly and immediately slowing down. I've made sure to watch the mpg needle and feather it to keep it near the high side, but 22mpg is shockingly low.

I found a gas station in my area that claims to sell ethanol-free gas. I'm going to fill up there next, and see if that makes any difference.

I can easily get 22 mpg if all I do is drive to work & back. 5 miles each way, lots of lights, and a pretty deep valley to cross. Accelerating from a dead stop really kills the mpg unless you really go easy on the accelerator.
Still love the car though, I'm averaging 27 mpg since I got it, and that's good enough for me. |

I've discovered a way to show the rest of you how to get the high mileage that I'm getting (if you have a CVT)!
Set your cruise control 'set speed' to 55 mph. Use your brakes to slow down to 22 mph. Hit resume, keep your foot OFF of the throttle, and watch the rpms. That's what you need to do-either with your foot, or the resume button, at every stop. Plus you need to NOT be doing lots of city driving, NOT have lots of short trips, and NOT have a really cold engine. On another note, I got sick of 'hypermiling' for 37 MPG. This tank, I'm using 2/3 and higher throttle from most stops, rather than 1/20th throttle, and I've lost about 7 MPG. Fuelly shows me doing this hyper/not hyper routine regularly. |

Just picked up my new 2013 Impreza last Friday, 5dr cvt. Still on the first tank of gas but getting readouts of 6.5-7 L after engine warms up (25 km or so). Overall average for the first 250 km sitting at 10.4 L. City driving and AC on, mostly quite short trips.
I've read pretty much every page of this thread over the last couple months as I made my car buying decision. So I kinda knew what to expect, I'm really happy with the car and I'm sure fuel economy will continue to improve. I'm bluepearly on fuelly as well, the 2nd 2013 woo! Waited 4 weeks from order date in case anyone is interested Cheers |

I try to splurge when someones in the car with me and not care SO much about fuel economy. Try to give them a good n fun experience in my car, but of course without driving like speedracer. My mpgs drop a couple but i can usually get it back up on the next days commute.

Update on mine. We have just had our first oil change (2788 miles) and the digital read out is showing 36.6 mpg average. We have not hand calculated it lately. Next time we fill up we will calculate it and compare the dash est.

my wife complained several times too since we bought this new impreza.... "there is no car in the front... why you're so slow" "do you want me to take turn?" and the arguments usually go on and ended up with our next car selections, "STI" "G25X" or "IS250AWD" |

I've driven two 2012 loaner Outbacks extensively, and in my normal driving I got slightly better mileage with the OB's than my Impreza. I really can't help but wonder why such a neutered-down engine in a lighter car does worse (for me anyway) than a way bigger and heavier OB with the same engine as the outgoing Impreza (I believe). I wonder how difficult it would be to swap an 11' ej 2.5 in my 2012. If it were fairly straight-forward, I'd get less oil consumption, more hp and torque, and the 2.5 is a bit lighter in weight as well.

You have a good point. This car needs the new FB25 with DI and engineer it to get the same MPH as it does now. Honda's new 13 Accord with 185hp from a 2.4 with a CVT gets 26/36 but it is not AWD. Subaru needs and will most likely have lighter AWD system in the future. I think Audi is coming out with some sort of electric AWD system.

Good stats, but I also see figures way less than the 27mpg for a strictly city commute. It falls in the acceptable range but to me this car should meet or exceed that 27mpg figure once broken in. This car was made and promoted as a city commuter. As a retired professional I really could care less about the MPG but I still think this cars engine could be better engineered for city and over 65mpg travel to get or exceed the 27/36 figure

It's that Subaru designed the car (intentionally) so that it requires deliberate actions from the driver to extract the power that's hidden just below the surface, as a way of optimizing fuel economy. It's probably a combination of how Subaru configured the throttle tip-in and "gearing" (regardless of whether it's the manual or CVT tranny in manual mode). I know that the car feel anemic below 3k RPM. I also know that 3rd gear (in the manual tranny) is good all the way up to 80 mph! So I can be driving down the highway in 5th at 60 mph and downshift directly into 3rd, placing me at 4.5k RPM. The car accelerates just fine when prepared for the task in this way. My VW TDI was a lazy man's car. Because of its low-end torque, it would accelerate in almost any gear as long as the engine was turning 2k or more (too bad the TDI was so damn unreliable, or I'd still be driving it!). The 2.0L Impreza will accelerate too, if you're willing to prepare it properly. Yes, this takes a toll on the fuel economy, but that's true of any car, including a TDI (I'm sure a Prius would deliver fuel economy in the 20s too if it was continuously flogged). So normally I'll roll along in the highest gear that the car will take, but if I need power, I know where and how to find it.
