Default How does the Subaru WRX AWD system compare to say the BMW 330xi or 325xi AWD?

Reason I'm askin is cuz I want an AWD car but the gf does not like the look of the Impreza...

What other turbocharged AWD performance cars are available in the US besides Subaru and Audi?

The evo will be comming out with the turbo and all wheel drive system. The toyta matrix is all wheel drive but no turbo. Don't really know of anything else with both turbo and al wheel drive. I didn't like the look of the wrx at first but it starts to grow on you.

You may want to feel aroud your backside and see if your spine is still present....
Ummm, as I assume it's going to be YOUR car...paid for and driven by YOU... so, buy whatever the hell you want.
Then when your gf wants to buy a car, let her buy whatever she wants.
Geez, what the hell are men becoming these days?

What part does your gf not like? there are lots of aftermarket dressup parts, the money you save going with the rex could easily change the look of the car.

Default turbo makes noise

Any turbo car makes noise. Whining noise up and down on your RPM. It also have turbo lag under 3k rpm. All wheel drive is really good (any AWD). If you have the $$$$ go with BMW. And about your GF, just give her up cause you will get many girles once you get the new car (WRX or BMW). Many wild girls will go for WRX, but no backseats room man.

I'm going to have to agree...let's just say hopefully you'll marry this girl, then you can consider her opinions....

But if you have no intentions of marrying her or it doesn't work out...then you're stuck with a car to have pleased her and not yourself. Get whatever YOU want....

And like smash0r said....the look is easy to change...heck...everybody is doing it

Not to mention that the BMW is alot more $$$, and back seat room....is just as small, and personally I think it's smaller then the Rex.

Good Luck!

That's why you get the wagon!!

Simple is better, it's cheaper and lighter. Having owned an Audi S4, my WRX is more responsive and I think it provides the same amount of grip and response even on the dated OEM tires.

BMW would be another step up....just a whole nuther feel altogether. Great cars, owned 5 late models (3's, Z's and M's).....I ended up with a WRX.

IMO, the best AWD systems on the market are Audi's Quattro and the Subaru's, particularly the VTD w/ the 4EAT (No MT whiner's please!) It seems that other mfrs. like VW, etc. are starting to see the advantages & appeal of AWD, like Subaru has always done. I've driven the BMW AWD wagon- Very nice in all respects.
Comparing the two is like apples/oranges- they both perform well, the major difference being the build quality of BMW which of course you pay for. I've never felt that I "settled " for less w/ the Subaru despite the advantages of BMW's interior, etc.

The WRX combination of AWD, Turbo, rally-performance, and pricing set it apart from the field, I think.

As to your GF's opinion:

I can relate! I've noticed that as the saying goes- some
"chicks dig it"-
In my case, my wife despises my wagon, & it reinforces her opinion of my insanity (she's a shrink!!) in that I traded in a "perfectly lovely" Camry for this "thing"
So, she drives her 'Benz, & I'm laughing, except when I get the bill for her $300 tune-ups from the dealer.

Hmmm...let me see here....

Shrink + Benz = $$$

Why don't you have her pay her OWN tune-up?

Get a VW AWD if you don't want to spend the big bucks and you don't like Subaru.

grey, or is it gray?

Lightbulb

I owned an automatic 1989 325 iX, awd car. I am not sure if BMW has updated their awd system, hopefully they have and this does not apply. My BMW was a Big Mechanical Worry! In less than 85,000 miles it was on it's third transfer case - both times it was replaced to the tune of about $5,000. Oh yeah, a cylinder ring went bad in it at around 50,000 miles so it also had a re-built engine, which was not fixed under warranty.
Throttle body, control arms, rear strut mounts, and wheel bearings all had to be replaced. The thing from the day the guy drove it off the lot plus it had no cup holders. Every couple of months it would spring a new oil leak. All of this stuff in addition to the schedule I and schedule II services every 15,000 miles.

Yeah, Bimmers carry more status, are arguably more attractive to look at and have a fancier interior. The new 3.0 engine in the 330 looks neato on paper. But for my money I'll take the Subaru. If you're really hung up on image, the VW may be a viable alternative to consider. I believe their 4motion system is identical to Audi's Quattro system, which is very good.

4-motion and the Quattro in the Audi TT is FWD almost all of the time. They only start moving power to the rear upon slip.

Quattro like in the [AS][468] is different and uses a torsen diff I believe.

That would be a good thing to do except I plan on marrying this girl so if I'm gonna spend the rest of my life w/ her, then her input on stuff that we are gonna share starts to matter. Just like I'm gonna push her AWAY from getting a Volvo station wagon (for some reason she seems to like it a lot)

What about the Quattro in the A4?

I'm in the same boat as you. My girlfriend (possibly fiance) HATES the look of the WRX.

I've been searching for an alternate AWD, I have yet to find one below $30k...and getting into the BMW/Audi realm, you're talking the high 30's and 40's.

Here are the ones I've found:

BMW (xi series)
Audi (quattro series)
VW (Passat)
Subaru (or course)
Toyota (Matrix)
Pontiac (Vibe)
After these, there's your typical SUV flavors.

The Passat is the sister car of the A4, the problem is, at least with me, the Passat AWD option only comes in an automatic which forces you to look at the A4 for the 5-speed.

The only thing I can suggest is maybe swap the standard WRX headlights for the Morretes. It totally changes the look fo the Impreza. My GF says they are better, but she still thinks the car is butt ugly. At least she likes the interior.

In all the research I've done, the WRX, no matter how ugly it is, matches the performance of the BMW/Audi for $10,000 less! "Why pay more?" is my argument to my girlfirend.

Good luck to you.

***edit***
Come to think of it, have you considered the Subaru Legacy? The GT a very nice style and comes with ALL the creature comforts. Granted it's less sporty than the WRX, but I feel it's in the same luxury class as the BMWs and Audis.

The whole 2L turbo AWD thing is basically any car running in the WRC.

Just look for a marketed edition of any rally car.

Skoda makes a damn fine car (www.vwvortex.com)
The Mitsu Lancer is more performance-oriented than the Subaru
Peugeot 206?

no one ever mentions Volvo...
they've got a good turbo motor and an AWD system... It's not the best AWD, but it's there... it's not BAD... it will get you thru bad weather, but I wouldn't go rallying w/ it...

Ahh! mrbell is right... I forgot all about Volvo.

They are more of the Luxury sedan, but the styling has come a long way since their "boxey" heritage. But, again, now you're talking in the 30's and 40's for price.

4Motion in the Passat is the same Torsen system that is called Quattro in the A4, etc. "4Motion" and "Quattro" are marketing terms. The All Audi's in the US (except for the TT) and the VW Passat use a Torsen AWD system. The TT (and Golf in Europe) use a Haldex AWD system.
