Should I continue to use Mobil 1 5w-30 Synthetic?
Hello Everyone,
I own a 2004 wrx stage 2. The uppipe and turboback are all catless. i live down in Texas so the weather is around 30F in the winter and could reach about 100F in the summer. I drive my car conservatively and let it warm to full operating temperature before I "get on it". Now, although I drive conservatively I do rev to 7K quite a bit and do "spirited" driving almost every other day. Well, my question is, what type of motor oil should I use. I currently use mobil 1 synthetic 5w-30, but w/ so many stories about the oil burning at high temperatures or high revs and what not, I thought Id look for something better. What do you guys recommend I use. I heard good things about Rotella synthetic 5w-40. Please give me some feedback!! Thank You for your help in Advance

I use rotella 15/40 thick and awesome oil pressure, but I am sure that is over kill for you.
I would get away from Mobil 1 and use castrol or something along those lines |

you should use a different weight oil for the summer and the winter.

from personal experience when I used m1 5-30 I burned oil, after switching to castrol syntec 0w30 I only burn ~200 ml over 7k miles. I wouldnt use royal purple. On my friends 05 sti he was burning a liter every 1-1.5k miles which I thought was nuts.
the specs on m1 5-30 suck compared to the other m1 oils. go to the m1 website and compare specs, and check out www.bobistheoilguy.com forums for insane oil knowledge. Read their faqs and check out some of the threads. I would try m1 0w40, m1 5w40, castrol syntec 0w30, rotella 5w40. |

I don't get why people use M1 5W-30 and then ask about Rotella T synthetic 5W-40. M1 TDT 5W-40 is an oil for similar applications to RTS.
M1 0W-40 (their "best 30 grade" ) , M1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5W-40, or any M1 High Mileage oil would be better bets, IMO. GC or RTS would also be good. -Dennis p.s. - Do NOT PM Uncle Scotty! You'll be reamed hard. |

really were you are at you should be fine running the RTS 5w40 year round, but if you need to go thicker then run something like the rotella 15w40, but as others have said don't use the m1 5w30 anymore and stay clear from the RP 5w30, both have shown a history of shearing down |
