2/09 build date here too, I think we are fine. At least it looks like Subaru is handling these issues well so far.

Before I purchased, I asked the salesman about the bearing issue and he told me that the problem was the bearings were missing during that time frame and that is what happened... like missing from the car...not put in... Ummm yeah, ok... that makes sense... The line of BS that spews from the mouths of salespeople is seemingly endless...

I have a 2/09 or a 3/09 as well, can't remember. All I know is it is an 09 build date so we are basically in the clear. It will be a sad day when the 09's start seizing!

I am doing a bad job of babying it for the first 1000 miles. Coming from a Honda Civic, it is a whole knew world having torque! She sees above 4000 RPMS frequently already at about 300 miles.

My engine started knocking today. I took it straight to the dealership. They drained the oil and there were a bunch of chips in it. They looked like copper.
It's being covered under warranty and I should have it back next week. The mechanic said Wed. The lady up front said maybe sooner because she thought they had an engine there already.
I had around 6000 miles on the car. It is completely stock. Not sure of the build date. When I get the car back I will add it to the list.
What a bummer.

Well you joined in August, so I assume you got the car around then so you probably have a July build date. RIP.

Hard to say. I bought mine at the end of April 09, but mine was an 08/08 build. Meanwhile some other people who bought their car around that time have 09 builds. Can we at least get the last 6 of the VIN?

FWIW, I bought my 09 on 10/31/08 and it has a 09/08 build date, VIN JF1GE76639G505XXX. Dealer found it heading into port to another dealer and snagged it for me before it was accounted for. So far, 6k trouble free miles...

Course now I've probably jinxed myself...

Welcome to club my freind. I hope you are clear, but my 08/08 build went at 7800 mi. Fired it up on a sat. night to get some food and it started knocking then, dead by Mon am. Should have it back next week, hopefully with the comp'd extended warranty. SoA claimed yesterday that there was no confirmation of a MFG defect/flaw. But they "understood" my concerna dn were working to remedy the situation. So far they have been good, let see when it's all said and done. Still not completely happy. Like I said, good luck brother, hope you didn't jinx yourself. Just drive it like it's all good, if it goes it goes. Later.

Where did you see that? You have a link?

What a joke though, we have engines blowing up left right and centre on these specific 3 months of build dates but there is no defect,.. so pathetic..

Sorry for the nub question, but I just bought this car, little worried about the build date now.
PM me the last 8 of your VIN and I will let you know the exact build date

A related tale....

I purchased an '09 Forester XT in Aug '08 (build date mid '08), which blew its engine in Feb '09, after 11,000kms. I was given a replacement long block and turbo, plus after much argument, an extended warranty (additional 2yrs).

Unfortunately it wasn't the end of the story, the vehicle also needed repainting, a replacement secondary air pump (after numerous trips to the dealer for VDC/ABS/CEL/Cruise lights illuminating), and 3 visits for stereo fixes/replacement. I lost 2 months of use of the vehicle between Feb and Aug this year.

No lemon laws in BC, so it took 6 months of discussions with the dealer and Subaru to conclude that I should be entitled to a replacement vehicle. Subaru wanted me to contribute $3500 towards a replacement, which I was unwilling to do so (on the basis that my $ should have got me something reliable and fit for purpose in the first place, and not required additional outlay to be in that position).

Anyway, we agreed to compromise and I said I'd accept a lower valued model at no cost to change. I actually ended up with a 2010 WRX Ltd (hatch), that had a retail cost of over $3k more than a replacement Forester, so from a financial perspective, I've done OK.

Subaru customer service were frankly appalling with regard to speed of response, handling the complaints and issues. Once it was escalated to the Customer Retention Manager things improved somewhat. My dealer was supportive and patient, but ultimately needed Subaru to sign off/support his decision to supply a replacement vehicle, and that process took a long, long time to resolve.

Got that straight from an SoA cust. service rep on the phone yesterday. Basically told me I can't believe everything I see out here on the web and such. Claimed they or she had no knowledge of any major mfg issues on 2008 builds. I didn't argue with her as she still said they have my info and have already contacted the dealer to get the background. I did mention that there we're over 80 of us with non-modified cars with seemingly the same issue. So, in my opiniom that says they still don't want to make an official statement on the problem we're all having. At least it seems like they are trying to handle them on a case by case basis. Like I said, so far so good, but I'm reserving judgement until I fire up my WRX next week. We'll see how it goes then. Still pushing for the comp'd warranty though, it's the least they can do. How am I supposed to sell this thing in the future...or worse trade it in and have the dealer tell me they can't give me too much for it because ut has a replaced engine, wouldn't that be rich.

That was a concern I had with my Forester, hence why I pushed for a replacement.

When I asked my dealer what he'd give me as a trade-in value (for an 6mth old 11,000km car), the depreciation was 30%, despite being told that a replacement engine wouldn't affect resale. Now the dealer's got my Forester on his lot for only $3k less than the original invoice price. He'd have potentially made a profit of $10k on a used car if I'd agreed to his trade-in valuation (plus the profit on $8k of warranty work while it was in his workshop).

They didn't sell the '09's yet in August. I bought mine right after it hit the lot in late September/early October here in southern California, which was before anybody else was seeing them.

Still could have gotten a July or August build date. I bought my car in April and it has a Jan '09 build date

That seems pretty obvious. When they started selling them is completely different from when they started making them. It stands to reason that if they didn't start selling them until September, they obviously didn't just toss out all the July and August cars that they built. I bought mine Oct 3rd and it's a July build. I'm on the list for having had mine replaced. My post had nothing to do with the possibility of the car being a July or August build. I was simply stating that they hadn't hit showroom floors yet in August and perhaps that it's a bit silly to assume a person bought their car on their join date. The only sure-fire way to tell your build-date is to look at the plate in the door jamb.

Default Oil analysis (Blackstone)

Got Blackstone motor oil analysis results from a 2009 hatch, manuf 07/2008, with 4500 miles on the engine and 3000 miles on the oil. The silver was at 4 ppm. Not clear what it should be for a WRX with silver-based bearings at this stage (or from engines at/before failure). I cut open the filter and did not really find anything. If somebody tells me how I can send the whoel report.

you can look at the other thread (09 motor issues) there were a couple of UOA's posted and compare #'s there. if the report is a jpeg you can upload at photobucket and then display it here- might be more appropriate in the other thread though

Finally got my car back today....

For some reason, it just.. Doesn't feel right....

I have been driving an 08 Outback 4-Speed automatic for the last 2 weeks.... This should feel like a rocket ship on acid..

But for some reason, the car just feels unsure about itself... Both Handling and power... I'm thinking the front tires were swapped during the repairs (going to check later) -- Which will explain the handling. But the engine -- It just seems confused....

Either way, I'm going to wait a week.. See if it breaks itself in... Just need to try and put some miles on it for over the next few days...

One thing of note is: The engine does feel noticeably smoother. There is no vibration at idle anymore, which was something I noticed before.

^i've heard a few poeple describe that about the new engines, frankly with the factory tune i always felt that the engine felt unsure, hesitated when pushed etc,... i though it was the closed loop, for emmisions,.. throw on stage 1 and all those little 'glitches' go away....

As to the vibration, isn't there supposed to be the vibration,. i thought the boxer 4, vibrates in waves as it idles...

Is there a different part number for the replacement blocks vs the failing ones? Just purchased an sti short block to build a hybrid and the last thing I need is to put in a block with a history of failures. Without the VIN I cannot determine the build date of the block.
For some reason I do not think that I will be able to claim a warranty on this.

Thanks,

Paul

Celly, keep us posted. I get mine back on Thursday/Friday, waiting impaitiently to do so. Did you get any "goodwill" form SoA on yours? Still waiting to hear back if they'll extend me a 100K, transferable warranty because of this malfunction. Whatever happens, I got to get out of this stupid Yaris. Good luck.
