Thumbs up Interested in Rallying?

If you are, you might want to come out to the Fall BAIC Four-Season road rallye on Oct 20.

Never rallyed before? No problem, Pete Soper, (psoper) the organizer and his rallye buddies are all super helpful. I had only done three of these when they told me about a crazy rally in Oregon on 250 miles of dirt logging roads. The rallye is called The Road Not Taken, and it was a blast. (read about my TRNT experience HERE ) Five BAIC’ers competed and we all had a great time. But if it wasn’t for the experience we got from the BAIC road rallye’s we would have been totally lost (literally!). So if you are interested in doing any performance rallying this is a great starting point. If you just want to have a fun afternoon that is more challenging then your average Sunday drive then grab a navigator, stopwatch and clipboard and come out.

You can read more about the Fall Rallye HERE

And we are having a Tulip reading Workshop

Btw: all the folks I’ve met on these rallye are really helpful and have all sorts of crazy stories. Ask Pete about competing in the Alcan 5000 rallye in his WRX.

or - in case you are lazy like me and don't usually click on links - here is some vital information on the upcomming rallye:

Quote:
The fourth and final installment of the 2002 BAIC 4 seasons rallye series will take place on Sunday, October 20.

Start location is at Santa Cruz Subaru.

Registration will open at 11:00 first car out at 12:01
The event runs about 4-5 hours so far... (I'm still working on the route)

Finish will be at a pizza parlor, (exactly which one is still to be decided).

This will be a very fun drive on some exceptionally twisty roads in the mountains north of Santa Cruz.

Jane drives a Honda.

Jane's Honda goes fast.

Jane is cool.

I'll admit that I have had a blast doing the 4 Seasons Rallye series with y'all. For those of you who enjoy driving new roads that you might never ever drive - this is the group for you! You see new places, meet cool people, and eat good food at the end of a fun filled day.

You don't konw what you are missing till you get out there!

I've invited a few non-subies, hope nobody minds. One friend has a brand-spankin' new Cooper S, the other a '69 Alfa-Romeo Duetto.

hey... this sounds fun... a few questions tho...

1 - my car have the tein ra's... would that be too bumpy to ride on this rally road?

2 - any fees we have to pay?

3 - wat to expect?

i've never been to these rally stuff, sorry if these r dumb questions...

HoMan - So road rallying like this is all on open streets, not closed roads. So we'll be driving regular roads, your Teins should be fine.

Fees - Pete usually charges something nominal, I can't remember if it was $5 or $15, and that's just to cover the trophies.

What to expect - Bring a navigator, clipboard, pencils and stopwatch. Arrive early, typically there is a half hour intro to rallying to explain how this one is run. Basically, we will be given a course book, with the instruction for each stage of the rallye. The instructions will specify the course, the distances and the prescribed avg. speed. The challenge is to execute those instructions perfectly. I expect we will be driving over maybe 50-100 miles through the hills above Santa Cruz.

During the rally, there will be surprise checkpoints where your time will be taken, if you are either early or late, you will be penalized. The challenge is to keep the prescribed pace, and not to go off course - all of which rely on excellent communication between navigator and driver.

There will be many rallye stages, with breaks between. It's good to bring some drinks and snacks.

I'm sure there's more questions, feel free to ask!

The fee is well worth it. It just barely covers the cost of the trophies.

I have a fairly stiff suspension and have had no trouble on any of the rallys yet. The worst was driving down Gilman to Pyramid after the rallye. Oh, and the wind near Benicia.

First, Thanks for all the info on the rally for us noobies. It is very helpful and sounds like a great way to get and run the SUBIES.

Just curious are there many father son teams?
I have a 16 year old son and a new WRX (my car not his) and we were wondering if there are other similiar teams so that we would fit in.

Thanks
Roger

there's been one father-son at the summer rallye, and I may talk my dad into comming as a navi for his buddy. If your son doesn't get car sick and can read the coursebook, it's all good!
