Hey, I'm hoping it's not cheapened out either. But judging by what VW has already done to two of their models, this is my guess.
50/50 chance of being right.
Let's hope I"m wrong.
I own a Golf, and would buy another.
More high strength steel and aluminum are not cheap. My guess is that the price is going up. And I doubt they will cheapify the interior because unlike the Jetta, the interior is what sells the GTI. No one shopping for performance per dollar buys them. Maybe that will change with the new one.

It's the other way around. Lighter materials are more expensive.

The two models VW made cheaper were designed for the US market, the Golf isn't.

Okay. Then how did VW make the Jetta larger and lower the MSRP?

Europeans are so cheap with the HP. Porsche is the only one who has stepped up to the Japanese competition.

The new Jetta has been panned for it's fit, finish, de-contenting, and general boredom, compared to the previous generation.

They have cut corners with the new Jetta to make it larger with a lower MSRP.

100 kg lighter - impressive
more hp/torque - nice (please minimize torque steer)
I really hope that diesel gets certified for USA.. also make it available in GTI trim. Would be my choice.. Amazing fuel economy, 190hp, gobs of torque and fun. please bring it to US.. GTD style..

The Volkswagen Golf Mk7 will blast in later this year as a leaner, safer, more economical car packed with technology usually associated with luxury models.

The all-new hatch will be available with a wider range of powertrains than today’s model, including a plug-in hybrid good for 243bhp and more than 50mpg, an electric model and a super-clean version fuelled by natural gas. The car is expected to be unveiled at the Paris show in September, before going on sale early next year.

See our artist's impression of the Volkswagen Golf Mk7
Mainstream models will be powered by a completely new family of downsized petrol engines (codenamed EA211) and super-frugal diesel units (EA288). The range-topping non-GTD 2.0 diesel is good for 181bhp and 280lb ft (there’s also a twin-turbo 220bhp version on test for the GTD) and the most powerful 1.4-litre turbo petrol engine gets 138bhp and cylinder deactivation for increased economy. The larger petrol engines (EA888) will be sized at 1.8 and 2.0 litres.

The new Golf GTI — expected to be powered by a 260bhp 2.0-litre petrol engine — also promises to set new standards for hot hatches. Sporting the new VAQ electronically controlled front diff, it will, VW claims, delivers much “more agile steering behaviour” and a much greater sense of precision through the wheel. According to VW, a VAQ-equipped Golf has lapped the Nürburgring 8.0sec faster than prototypes with a conventional differential.

Next Volkswagen Golf's underpinnings revealed
All-wheel drive will be an option on the Golf’s new MQB platform, as will an updated version of VW’s Dynamic Chassis Control active dampers.
VW is promising to roll out a lightweight version of the Golf Mk7, with aluminium for the floor pressings, boot floor and windscreen base. Company sources would not say which models will get this alloy-steel hybrid structure, but it’s thought that the EV and GTI are the leading candidates. Even in its standard form, the new Golf is as light as the Mk4 model from the late 1990s, even though it is much safer in a collision.
The Golf will be one of the first VW Group cars to be based on the radical new MQB platform and its standardised components. MQB can be stretched all the way from underpinning the Polo supermini to the executive-sized Passat. It comes with its own bespoke factory and production lines, which will be rolled out across the world.

Among the Golf’s hi-tech options will be an 8in iPad-style dashboard touchscreen, adaptive cruise control, driver fatigue detection, 360deg parking sensors and Park Assist 2, a semi-autonomous system that can park the car in a tight supermarket-style space.

While the Volkswagen Golf Mk6 has only been on sale since 2009, work on the next-generation Mk7 edition is already well underway. We've been shooting spy photos of prototypes for some time, though the cars are still heavily camouflaged.
But based on previous photos—as well as some insider information—our illustrators have tweaked their original renderings and put together new images of what we believe the next Volkswagen Golf will look like.
The Mk7 2014 Volkswagen Golf is in for a big change underneath. It will be moving to VW's flexible MQB chassis. This same chassis will underpin the next-gen Audi A3 and several other models throughout the Volkswagen AG lineup.
Under the hood, the new Golf will have an equally new 2.0L turbocharged, direct-injected four-cylinder engine, good for 170-180 hp. We think this might finally signal the end of VW's ancient 2.5L five-cylinder.
The 2.0L TDi will also continue to be offered, along with a full EV model as well.
Watch for production of the 2014 Volkswagen Golf to start around the middle of 2013.

I'm looking forward to what VW will produce with the MK7. I own a 2010 Mk6 GTI and love it. I've only got about 25k miles on mine so far but it's been completely reliable - no leaks, rattles, squeeks - nothing. The TSI motors have been a big step forward in reliability for VW and they respond very well to tuning.

I have the APR Stage 1 Software and intake on my car which has been dynoing in the 265hp/300+tq range at the crank. At this power level it produces almost zero torque steer. I can floor it in 1st and 2nd gear without my hand on the steering wheel. If I'm on an unlevel road or one of the wheels hits moisture or gravel then it's a different story but it doesn't yank the steering wheel ever. It'll never compare to AWD for traction but the upside is that the car is lighter and only has 10-12% drivetrain loss.

Overall the build quality is better than my wife's 2006 BMW 530. On the road it's smoother, quieter, quicker and gets 27+ mpg (Average! Hwy is over 30).

Anyway - the prospect of a ~2800 lb, 260hp GTI with a true LSD sounds awesome.

I agree. I've had mine for a mere 5 months but in that time it has given me zero issues and has returned about the same 27mpg. It is a blast to drive and aside from the front wheel spinning (damn all-seasons) it handles very little like a front driver. Quite balanced and almost neutral in corners.

Even worse than all seasons is winter tires on 60 degree February days. I went ahead and switched back to my summers two days ago. And I still spin in summer tires (Stage 1), but at least I can have some fun in the car. As for torque steer, I don't understand why it ever became such a point of contention. It's a far distant concern compared to traction.

I really hope they make AWD and option instead of forcing you to pay $10k for a lot of junk you don't want just to get AWD.

Like better engine, brakes, suspension, seats and resale value?

Actually the r golfs don't sound too far off from an sti phrased like that, minus the one run every 4 years bit.

Default New Golf GTI gets 260bhp

Clever front differential tech and 260bhp for lighter, faster Mk7 hot hatch

Quote:
The all new, Mk7 Volkswagen Golf GTI has been spied undergoing final testing before an expected showroom launch early next year. The all-important GTI is rumoured to be powered by a 260bhp turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine and will get the firm’s new VAQ front differential for “more agile steering behaviour”.
Insiders say this VAQ unit, which consists of an electronically controlled Haldex clutch of the kind usually found in four-wheel drive systems, would allow the new car to lap the Nürburgring faster than today’s GTI even if it didn’t have any extra power.
VW bosses have already revealed that they are working on a lightweight version of the Mk7 Golf structure with aluminium floor pressings and an aluminium roof, and this is expected to be used as a base for the GTI.
However, the more potent Golf R is expected to get a super-light carbonfibre roof. VW engineers have come up with a way of incorporating steel flanges into the panel, allowing it to be welded to the car’s steel side structure.
The Mk7 Golf is the second model — after the Audi A3 — to be based on the VW Group’s new MQB architecture. It will be unveiled at the Paris show in September before reaching showrooms early next year.
Although the car is heavily disguised in these pictures, the Golf’s signature wide C-pillars are visible. However, the front-end styling looks less bluff, with low-mounted headlights sitting below raised wings.

I have to say, I kind of miss the solid feeling of my MKV, the quiet, refined ride, and the feeling inside the cabin. I don't miss the trips to the dealership...I still might be interested in this.

Question, Do you program these like Subaru's. I have never had a VW. But I am thinking of a Golf R to replace the WRX I sold. Do you have to send the whole computer in to get programmed, or do you just reflash it?
