Just wondering, since I'm a noob with cars. When it comes to an emergency, is it the rims that help you brake on time and doesn't skid or is it the tires that help you stop on time?
What about the brakes? I want something that if I need to brake suddenly I want it to BRAKE suddenly, not slow down or skid even an inch, well an inch maybe I'm exaggerating, maybe half a feet. Is there any rims/tires/brakes that actually stop and does not skid an inch going at say....40-50mph ? |

^^^ Tires. They are responsible for grip/traction and the only part of the car that has contact with the ground. Wheels play a part as far as rotational weight/inertia go. If there are more aggressive brake pad compounds available for these cars or a performance big brake kit, you could also take those into consideration. $$$$$ and the associated penalties of increased noise, dust, and wear on the rotors are the usual tradeoffs. Modern ABS takes care of the skidding (depending on road surface conditions and factory calibration).
Best thing to do IMHO, is to maintain a good distance to give yourself plenty of time to brake or perform an avoidance maneuver. |

rims don't play a big role in that, tire, brakes, suspension those are your key components in slowing down the vehicle. rim X or rim y will not aid much in that regard.
when choosing a rim you should also be careful buying cheap rims, a cheap rim might be say 100 a rim, example sports edition rims while an enkei might be 20 bucks more, the enkei is made to higher standard so spend the extra 20. Much like with tires you have to research rim quality, some can be too soft and get bent quite easily when you hit a pothole. As for more expensive rims thats a personally choice, I stick to a maximum of 150 per rim. As you are in nyc like myself most ppl drop 2k or more on their rims just to be ballers, vossens, asante, etc. they look nice but can easily be taken out on an nyc pothole. I generally pick rims that I know can take the hit, this will be my second set of enkei rims and also my second set of oz manufactured rims (sparcos). I had the msw rims before hand also from oz so I know what the quality of the rim is already. Now in terms of brake setups: I like hawks and ebc, I used both on my last car, I prefer regular blanks for my rotors don't care much for drilled or slotted rotors. I use motul 5.1 as my brake fluid of choice already have a case waiting for when I bleed the brakes. The ecsta offer very good grip and performed well on my last setup. before the 4x I had the asx which were their predecessors. I already looked into brakes for our cars and they are very budget friendly hawk pads are about the same price but cost of a rotor and a pretty decent brake pad is very low in comparison to my previous honda civic and accord. Either way you should do your research and pick what works best for you. http://www.tirerack.com/brakes/tech/index.jsp |

Very informative ! Thanks !!
I'm just gonna use what you use since you're from NYC too and I'm absolutely clueless with what to buy. Quote:

don't do that, my driving style is different than yours so what works for me might not for you. pick a rim setup that looks good on your car, check tirerack for that and they also have view on car. then once you find a good set check into their quality. As for tires you have to pick what works for you. I have winter tires so when its warm I go for tires that aren't any good in the winter since in summer i want grip and decent traction in wet weather. You have to pick a rim that accentuates your car well without blowing your budget. For tires mine offer more road feedback and somewhat harsher ride some ppl though prefer tires which are softer and take the impact and vibration differently. Your tire choice will depend on your own personal priorities. I don't mine the sacrifices I made with my selection but its a very personal choice. You have to decide what works for your specific driving style and for how you use your car. The only advice I can give in terms of tire selection for nyc is if you drive in the city alot stay away from the continental line of tires generally the sidewall is softer so you might have a higher chance of popping the tire or getting a bubble. Tirerack has plenty of info and tests and everything you could possibly want to know.
UPDATE: here are a few other looks that go with dgm Other rims I liked Enkei Performance Imola Enkei Performance KLAMP Enkei Performance GW8 paint the red parts dgm http://www.northamericanmotoring.com...e-for-17s.html Sparco Drift http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=2149011 http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=1575028 http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=1773077 blue gold Last edited by aeoporta; 03-03-2013 at 05:31 PM. |

hey danstheman7,
that is the gtx leather kit, you have to have it professionally installed by an installer. the rip off dealership bill kolb jr sells cars with the kit installed. The quality is not very good, it would be better to just get a custom katzkin leather with that color scheme, the katzkin is a higher quality than this kit katzkin will be 900 to 1100 or so installed, gtk kit cost about 400 or more plus installation so they work out to the same price. I looked into this modification I decided the katzkin would be the best option then I decided I didn't want leather seats. Whenever my seats start to get bad i will have them custom covered just with color matched fabric instead of leather. http://www.bkcars.com/bill-kolb-subaru-gtx/ http://legacygt.com/forums/showthrea...ht=gtx+leather |

Hey guys I have a 2012 Impreza Sport with the stock sport wheels. I am looking to get some wheel spacers to make it look more flush. I was thinking about going with either 15mm or 20mm spacers. Any suggestions?

^Not worth it in the long run.
The car was engineered to handle a certain way, and if you alter the suspension cutting corners like that it will put more wear and tear on other parts. You will have parts wear faster and your suspension system will suffer. Also im not even sure if you would be able to tighten the lug nuts safley/effectively with spacers that big. Maybe if you got longer studs. Either way, your car will look the same but you will be hurting it long term. |

If you do spacers, get extended studs. Period. Or wider wheels.

To balance out the rear wheels being slightly poked in compared to the fronts, has anyone tried running staggered wheels? If you search for FRS/BRZ wheels online, alot come staggered. I know staggered on FWD is dumb, and it's mostly for RWD, but I'd assume AWD could benefit as well as long as it's not a big difference. IE, same offset, but run 7.5's on the front and 8's on the rear, or something like that.. Any ideas?

Of course about 30 mins ago while at walmart I just noticed a bubble in my sidewall now I will have to put the sparcos on the red impreza a few days ahead of schedule PS: I think we are suppose to have some snow |

Lemme know how you like those 4X's. I had them on my Si and they were really good on a FWD. Should be even better on the Soob.

thanks gents, yeah the ekm3 in gunmetal won out over the hyper silver versions.
I wanted to keep close to the oem look while not being overly ghetto Going into it I knew the bronze was on the darker side so that blends well with the red. As for the kumhos, averagewhiteboy, I also had them on my 09 accord so will be interesting to see how they react now with awd, I will report back. On the accord sedan I had also upgraded the rear sway with the acura tsx bar so I will see how much the sti rsb makes her corner and how much more I can torture the kumhos thru turns. If we get enough snow or sleet I am gonna see if the car continues to be fun when taking corners at speed and letting the tail out in snow. I expect to see a lot more pics in this thread soon. PS: anyone in the tristate looking for tires I have stock yokos with 9 miles for sale and also another set with 5k on them also up for sale feel free to pm. |
