Default Stock 06 WRX--Engine stuttering and loss of power.. Please help!!

I’ve been having some trouble with my 2006 Subaru Impreza WRX for some time now, but only recently has it gotten worse.. Here’s what’s going on:

At about 2500 to 3000 RPM, the engine will begin to stutter and lose power. By stutter, I mean the car will jerk as I try to accelerate. Acceleration during this time is minimal to absent unless I change to a lower gear. In a lower gear, acceleration is slow until I reach 3500 to 4000 RPM, then the car will accelerate as normal. After driving about 20 miles or so, the problem usually corrects itself but will reoccur either same day or again in a few days.

I have no engine modifications at all. I perform oil changes regularly. I’ve recently changed spark plugs and the fuel filter with OEM parts, as well as cleaned the PCV valve and MAF. When the problem first presented itself, I was still under warranty, but the service techs weren’t able to figure out what was wrong.

Any idea what this could be??

Thanks!!

It's good that you took the vehicle to the dealer while it was still under warranty - you're likely going to end up going back to the dealer to replicate the problem and use that as leverage to get them to cover it.

Have you found that it jerks more or less at certain times of the day, temperatures or levels of humidity?

Dumb question but did you try resetting the ECU yet?

Actually, I do believe it jerks more when it's hot (98+ degrees), but it also does it in cooler temperatures..

Try cleaning your mass airflow sensor. My 07 will do this once and a while and i clean it with electrical cleaner and reset my ecu... voila problem solved! idk if this is your issue but it sounds like it could be and wouldnt hurt to try.

I cleaned my MAF not too long ago.. Maybe I didn't clean it well enough. Do you use the CRC MAF Cleaner or the submerging-in-alcohol method?

i used maf cleaner. but the last time i did it i didnt have any maf cleaner and i used brake parts cleaner (yes i know not the best for it) but it worked awesome. i sprayed the BPC on there and sprayed it off with a air hose and everything was fine. i wouldnt let the BPC sit on there for a long time though.

CRC MAF cleaner is the way to go though! if you do use the BPC do it with caution !

I have a 2007 wrx no mods it does the same thing and the dealership said i have a lightened fly wheel on the car they said if i swap a factory flywheel back on it that will fix the problem. Also the turbo makes a quick grind noise at 4k rpm in only 2nd and 3rd gear. the dealer ship is really starting to aggravate me. any ideas?

I had a similar issue and I thought it was my boost control selenoid. come to find out when I removed my MAF to clean it the gasket got all tangled up due to it being old and stretched. I took the MAF off and sat the gasket in nice and snug, then tightened the screws a little at a time. Then reset the ECU. Even before "learning" was done it felt a whole lot better (Southern Maryland talk) Try it out. Its one of the easier things to do.

I am having this same exact problem! I have a stock 06' WRX too and your description is exactly what I'm experiencing. Around 2500-3k RPM it sputters REALLY bad!

Have you found any solution yet? I would really appreciate any feedback.

I have been looking into cleaning the MAF sensor and am hoping that will do the trick. Has anybody tried this with success? Any feedback would be appreciated.

Well I just got it out of the body shop and haven't even cleaned the MAF sensor. It seemed to fix itself. Sweet!

I make it a habbit to reset the ECU by unplugging the battery for 30 minutes and cleaning the MAF with MAF cleaner every single time I change my oil. I've never experienced the issue you guys are describing. Just my $0.02.

Did anybody ever find out the cause of this? I have a 2010 wrx with TBE and K&N intake just flashed to stage 2 tried different maps that i got through some forums and cobb but its getting worse and its every time I drive now. Basically unless I floor it around 5 psi and/or 2500 - 3000 rpm range it feels like the car is pushing but wont go anywhere or rev higher and stutters/jerks unless I floor it and it goes away after a minute or so but does it everytime. Any info please let me know.

I am having the exact same issues as the OP. My AP is also telling me my AFR are around 13.5-14 at WOT!! 14.7 at idle and she idles smoothly and no problems starting.
Gas mileage has not changed at all.

2006 WRX:
Cobb TBE
Cobb standard Stage 2 tune
K&N typhoon intake

Here is what I have done so far:

Thought it could be the neutral possition switch on the tranny - replaced it - no change.
Replaced the fuel filter - no change
Reset ECU several times now - no change
Did a cursory inspection for cracked intake/vac hoses - none are obvious.
Replaced plugs about 10,000 miles ago.

I realize the KN filter my affect my AFR numbers, but I didnt think theyd be that high. Will the ECU try to correct for the high AFR and cause this stuttering acceleration at low RPM only?? Again, she pulls great above 4k...

Any input would be greatly appreciated!
