Default New interior done! Suede, Plasti-dip, etc.

No paint still, but I wanted to have it for the CU car show, so I picked it up and will take it back to have it painted later. I actually won an award for the interior, which was encouraging as I finished it the night before haha.

Summary of the changes:

- Blue microsuede on the headliner
- Black microsuede on a/b/c pillars
- Blue on the seatbelt insert
- Redid the rear window deck in black canvas
- Plasti-dipped the door sills, as well as HVAC knobs
- Textured paint for plastics on silver center dash section
- New head unit
- Dyed black carpet
- Misc pieces I needed to finish the dash swap, like the coin tray and radio brackets

A few things still need to be done, like put the rearview mirror back in, and getting the S204 hvac centers and red hazard. It's pretty much done though. Also, I know the steering wheel doesn't look great, but the airbags from the donor car were blown, so I figured it would look better than a duct taped airbag cover until I can get an STi wheel on there.

Let me know what you think!

I'd like to see your car when it's painted.

I think your interior looks well done. I agree with the steering wheel and a new harzard will complete the dash nicely.

How hard was the headliner? Where did you source the materails from? Did you do it your self?

Good job.

How exactly do you plasti-dip something? Pardon my noobness, but my console trim has some pretty gnarly scratches and I'd like to do something other than rattlecan.

I did do it all myself. I got the fabric at Joanne Fabrics, but it took me forever (and several cities haha) to find one that had the black microsuede, as apparently it's a seasonal item. The headliner wasn't too hard, as it's mostly flat, but it's really hard to get it perfect with no wrinkles at all since it's such a large thing. The pillars weren't as bad in my opinion, but they were tricky to wrap the fabric around the back and get it to conform to all the little curves.

I'll make sure to post pictures when it's painted!

Was there any specific type of adhesive for the headliner?

My airbags don't work. It's just the blown covers fiberglassed and recovered.

Here's a good thread I made a while ago on it.

I used headliner spray that I bought at Joanne's for all of it. I recovered some pieces in a different fabric in the past with this elmers "permanent" spray glue, and after a week of hot days, it failed and the fabric sagged off. I'm guessing the headliner spray is designed to not fail in those conditions, tradeoff is you have to be more careful about not letting it soak through the fabric.

Wow, that plasti-dip stuff looks pretty sweet, might be a project for me in the next few weeks. How did you get the dials off and get them colored without the leds being covered?

Interior looks goood. I really like the suede.

What HVAC control unit are you using? Does the car have auto-climate control? If not how did you get the 05+ knobs to work with a car that doesn't have auto-climate control?

I think I might have gone over it in the plasti-dip thread, but maybe not, i just remember it took me a while to figure out. Basically, you unscrew the box they're all in off the center dash section, then pop up the little tabs on the wheel part, and just pull them off. Then you have just the rings, and the little orange piece pops out of those. Spray, reassemble, and voila. You can't do the middle part, you just have to order either the STi limited or s204 black center parts.

As for the auto climate control stuff, it's an 05 wrx dash. The car has a full wrx swap, sorry if I didn't mention that, so yes, the auto climate control does work. I'll try and dig up an old thread about it, but long story short, we swapped everything mechanical basically, including the subframes. Thats why those STi wheels fill the wheel wells so wickedly

Believe it or not, the car started as a 93'L with a tan interior. Now it's a bastard child of 93, 01, version5, wrx, and STi stuff haha.

I just ordered the dash conversion from 04 to 05 style but planned on keeping the TR style manual controls. I heard its a pain

3M 8080 or 8088 (clear) is the best adhesive to use for 99% of auto upholstery...you have to hold the can farther away than instructed when using it on thin fabrics because it will soak through...18-24 inches away is best for these

it is great for carpeted stereo boxes and if you use the method mentioned above it works with most fabrics - i've been using it for years

do NOT get 8090 - it is for vinyl tops and the like...it's viscous and much to aggressive for soft fabrics and Super 77 will come apart with time because it does not stand up to the sun or heat a car sits in

Thanks for the responses. Is there any specific store that carries the 3M adhesive.

It seems like a great project to work on.

that looks incredible. a few things that would really help the interior would be black seat belts (i think all WRX belts are black) and paint your visors black as well. Then your interior will be sick!

headliner shows marks a little more, though. But im sure you can brush those out with a big soft brush to get rid of any finger markings.

definitely a hell of a setup. much respect!

Thanks Yea, the headliner has finger marks all over it from the show, where people got in and said "is that suede? and ran their hands over it lol.

The visors are in the works, but I'm unsure what direction I'll go with them. I'm not sure if I want to paint them, or have an upholstery shop make me black suede ones. The belts are another story, I already had to search around to find the grey ones, since the originals were tan. They don't match great, but I'm not sure if the GD wrx ones will fit, so I figure they're fine for now.

The headliner does seem like a pretty cool (and cheap) mod. How many yards of that microsuede did it take to cover the headliner? I didn't want to sift through that whole thread, I just saw it was about 9 bucks a yard.

I think I ended up using about 2.5 yards. I had extra on all sides I cut off, but I'd say that's pretty close.
