IggBore v3.0 DIY intake
I did a new DIY intake tonight. just for kicks. my old one had too much duct tape on it. this one is very similar to an injen intake or the like. It consists of one 90* ABS elbow (the "plack PVC" at home depot) and the tube from a civic short ram intake available at any autozone for 30-ish bucks. IT uses the stock airbox from a 2.2L engine. why, you ask? the stock 2.2L airbox as a very good straight-through flow design, whereas in teh top mount 2.5 airbox the air has to take a 90* turn through a filter. not good for velocity. also, the 2.2L box has a 3" opening on both sides of the filter. I have a small velocity stack going from the box into the fenderwell.
top end is nice, low end isn't appreciably boggy. oddly enough, top gear cruising throttle response is better. like 60 mph in top gear, the response feels better than stock. I'll have pics tomorrow. jsut wanted to mention all this. -IggDawg

How big is the pipe? That sounds like what used to be on my car before I got the COBB.

here are t3h pics!
so there it is. pipes are 3 inches all the way to the TB except for the "accordion section." I needed something to connect the pipes to the airbox with so I chopped out a piece from another 2.2l intake I had sitting around. ideally that piece would be another 3 inch ABS pipe. you can see the little tube in the last pic the little pipe that goes from the box into the fender. this is important to install or else you'll be pulling in air from teh fender, AND ari from around the sides of the box. not only will this be giving you warmer air, but the two streams will meet just before the box and cause turbulence. so there she is in a nutshell. much like an injen or an AEM intake that feeds from teh fender instead of the engine bay. also, I think it's a little wider. -IggDawg PS - check out the snazzy strut top hat covers. while you're in the junkyard getting this or that, look at the older legacies. some of them have those and I think they look nice on Imprezas. |

The black tape is a nice touch
I take it that the Civic tube is 3"? |

I reckon. and yeah, the black tape adds powAr. when I get the final tubes I want on it I'll silicone everything up. I want to change out the black elbow for one with a different fitting so I can use a proper rubber coupling hose. right now it's jimmy-funded with whatever short rubber tube I found lying around the garage. so when I replace that and the accordion pipe I'l seal it up all nice like.

It's not too loud till around 4500+ RPMs where it gives this wonderful metal-mechanical scream . I'm sure teh baffled section of pipe cuts down on sound, yet another reason to reaplace it ASAP

Are you gonna be at the east coast subaru shootout? If so we can test it against my COBB there.

Sweet, you guys are going as well? I'll be up there with a few people... unsure whether my car will be going/be raced this year or not though.

Last year I went in on a room with 3 people and I think each of us spent $30 a piece for both nights. IIRC, we were staying at the Comfort Inn and we'll probably be staying there again. Take a look at the planning thread in PPB... RiftsWRX handled our reservations last year and may be doing it again this year.

Update:
I replaced that restrictive section with a piece of 3-inch tubing (made from a 1-litre coke bottle and duct tape ). so now it's 3 inches uniformly from the fender-mount airbox to the TB. It helped. noticably. the whole system is working wonderfully now. I know where my top end was hiding all these years . it works really nicely. I have a pretty well tuned butt dyno, and I can certainly tell it's better than stock. the low end is amazingly responsive. when I putt around parking lots, a little blip of hte throttle sends the wife's head into the headrest . I had to relearn her in some respects. she really wakes up around 4500 now too, where she used to just kinda continue accelerating at a moderate pace. definitely worth the 10 dollars in parts. it feels superior to the hommade ganzflow I had for sure. -IggDawg |

Wow, I didn't know that the 90* bend in the stock intake was that restrictive.
Guess who's going to ask for a Cobb for his birthday |

PICS POR FAVOR! I just may do this myself..... Does it translate directly over to a 93 L, or is there other stuff to take into consideration?

the TB might be narrower, but other than that it should be fine. all that trouble I had with that restrictive section (later replaced by a coke bottle) would be a moot point for you. your MAF would fit that area perfectly. I'll take some more pics later today.
just for the record, you hae a 1.8l right? -IggDawg |

Upload the finished one, I want to see the coke bottle! Can you read the lettering on the bottle? You should send in a pic to Coca Cola, you might get a sponsorship
