no, bull****, there is no way you could have caused that. The dealership sound shady as hell. They have absolutely no say in what does or doesn't get repaired on big $$$ items anyway.

Anyway since when is the EJ255 a non-interference engine????

LOL - thanks for all the support. Part of the reason I got a Subaru was because I knew I would have a family who cared about the cars. I really do appreciate all the responses, I certainly don't feel alone.

I talked with my personal Subby expert, he recommended I buy a Gates Racing Belt (which I did) he's going to install it when he gets back from vacation, that should really help. He said if it's running fine that he probably wouldn't run a drip down or compression test.

As far as service centers go, there's a dealer that's a little further away from me 35-40min that I hear does a better job. I might check them out next week and just introduce myself and the car, get an inspection and oil change or something.

Its an ej257 and there is valve interference but from what I was told by a mechanic if the belt strips the valve train is designed to close the valves so they don't hit the pistons. Also not sure if the valves will close if the belt brakes or skips a few teeth.

Just for the sake of clearing this misconception up. The valve train wasn't designed with this in mind, its an added benifit to the design. It still happens everyday when someone slams a subaru hard enough into something the belt jumps and eats the valve train. The theroy your mechanic was surely suggesting is that because the valve is on a spring and the cam lobe depresses this valve, once it throws a belt the cam releives its presure from that valve. Problem is when it jumps a tooth in mid spin 3000-6000rpm it will have spun atleast a couple hundred more times before sputtering to a stop. The cam will continue to turn and force open valves at the wrong time. Most of this damage will occur with in seconds.

Also, if it truely only jumped one tooth, that's like a fraction of an inch if that, this means that the timing in witch the valves opening and closing was only altered ever so slightly...chances are there was no further damage from this event...that would be my opinion with out looking for myself
