Default P0100, P0101 - Replaced MAF, Still Won't Start

Trying to fix my dads beater 95 Legacy. It's been having lots of idle and ignition problems lately because of the MAF sensor. For example, some days it would sputter like crazy and you would need to hold your foot on the gas for a few minutes and let it idle at about 3k before it would idle on its own. Otherwise it would just sputter out and die. HUGE loss in MPG overall even when it would idle on its own.

Well, we ignored it for long enough and it died totally. He was driving down the street when it cut out, and it had to be pushed back to the house (luckily it was close).

Pulled out two codes, a p0100 and a p0101; both of which are MAF related codes. I replaced the MAF sensor with the one out of my impreza and it still won't start. However I should note that when I took the faulty MAF from the legacy and put it into the impreza it would at least start, just not idle correctly.

We have fuel and spark. Can you think of anything else we should check? Keep in mind I have another car with the same motor that I am willing to temporarily cannibalize to figure this out. Thanks! Below is a video.

Harness is fine, checked connections for the MAF. Just to be sure I checked the MAP, Cam, Crank, Knock sensors too. I would imagine if one of the sensors was bad it would throw a code saying so. Still trying to figure this out

Did you figure this out? I have a MAF code in my 96. Barely stays running. Inconsistent at any rpm. Terrible fuel mileage.

We took it to a shop and they got it running some how. It was a combination of a few things: it was losing compression in one of the cylinders and needed a headgasket replacement and the MAF was shot. I pulled the motor and replaced the headgasket and I replaced the MAF and coolant temperature sensor and we haven't had any issues so far. My suggestion would be to replace the MAF

Thanks for the follow up. I'll try throwing a MAF at it. At least that's an easy job.

Yeah, I read that somewhere else. Haven't had a chance to try it. Does that work after the computer has been reset? I've read that the computer supposedly learns to run without the MAF which is why unplugging it allows the car to continue to run.

Yes, it runs with the MAF unplugged anytime the rest of the fuel metering system is working well enough. The ECU has pre programmed values of what the sensor should read based on other things that are working, like the map sensor, Engine speed, intake air temperature, O2 sensor, etc. It is not learned, it's programmed in from the factory as a fail safe mode. On Some models this type of situation will limit Engine speed or throttle angle or both. This is so that in the case of a partially or completely failed sensor, it can ignore the bad data or lack of data and still get you home.

In my experience if you unplug the sensor while it is running it will quit. But it should start if you turn the key off and back on and crank it.

Unplugged MAF, ran similarly to how it was running, but with a faster oscillation of the rpms.

Installed new MAF, problem gone.
