16x8 or 17x7.5 or 17x8
looking for new wheels for the spring. my car is driven a little on the street and mostly sees autocross and a few hpdes. ive been running stock 01 rs 16x7 with 225/50/16. the shoulder is not square enough, lots of roll over. i have avalible 2 sets of rota slipstreams 16x8. this would square it up and my breaks would fill it out nice. or should i get a 17x8. i would still use a 225 width. 225/45/17. i have the 4 pot 2 pot setup, i love it. i might even try a 245/45/16 mmmm. opinions welcome

Here's my thoughts. Buying a new set of rims, just to run a 225 on an 8" vs. a 7" isn't worth it. You have two options, 1. Run a stiffer tire on the 7" rim, a lot of 225's are right in the middle spec for a 7" wheel. The measured rim width of a 225 50 RT615 is 7". Its all in the tire. For example, my RE050A's and RS-2's didn't feel great on 7" wheels without a lot of pressure, but the Azenis feel a lot better, all in 225 50. Second, try a 225 45 like you said. This will gain you some turn in feel, and better gearing for you HPDE's. Both of those options are considerable cheaper then buying new wheels. You have a GC, so you can't fit 245/255 under there without some alterations, so unless you plan on taking those steps, no need for 8" or wheel. What tire are you running? Now get me a set of those Rotas! Last edited by REX8; 02-21-2007 at 03:59 PM. |

I've seen 245/45/16s on a gc, (on coilovers) but the ride height was way up there . Can't see 235s+ fitting without flares or cutting...

well i think im just gonna get the 16x8 slipstreams. they are special order. 600a set. my only thing is i was wondering if my current brake setup will withstand track days. if not than i must go with 17s. i have the racing brake 4 pot fronts with theyer 12.6 inch 2 peice rotor. suby 2 pot rears with hawk race pads. this setup was ok with the 1 peice fronts but now i have a turbo engine and twice the power. i plan on adding brake cooling ducts.and lightining the car by about 200 lbs. i dont want to get the 16s and have to end up getting bigger front brakes and 17s

What tires are you running?! What kind of pressure?
Your brakes should be plenty for your weight. What kind of power are you putting out? It is REALLY silly to spend $600 for 8" wheels if you are going to run 225's. 7" is plenty for 225's on the track, infact most 225 50's are exactly 7" in measured width. Even if you do'nt run a good stiff tire, A 225 45 16 on a 7" wheel makes much more sense than dropping $600 on an 8" wheel Last edited by REX8; 02-21-2007 at 06:39 PM. |

KD's are nice, still after all this time they are fast...but pricey. If you're still looking to run a street tire, Kumho MX's are great with heat, and RT615's aren't bad, especially on a light car. Not sure if you were thinking about Toyo or Kumho R's though...

If you're looking for track tires...the Kumho's are going to wear pretty quickly. A season out of victoracers maybe a little more. Not realy the best choice for strickly HPDE's without competition.
Toyo RA-1's or Yoko A048Rs (more expensive but will last longer) will probably your best bet. Hankook has closeout sales on their mid-level R for $110 for a 225 50 16, thats kinda hard to argue with. |

I am looking at the different size tires to run. I have two sets of wheels and one is for DD and the other will be for track day. I am running on my 17 x 7 a 215/45/17 for daily driving, but want to see what is the widest I can run. my other set is 17 x 8 with 235/45/17 which do not fit unless I use spacers. I was thinking of 235/40 or whatever will work with using the STi pinks without spacers.
Anyone have pictures showing their combination? |

on stock power with coilovers and running good amount of camber -3.5 front, i ran 225-50-15 v710's on autox and 225-50-15 ra1's for track... it was a good setup as team dynamics 15x7 45mm offset only weighed 13lbs... and these wheels clear easily even 2006-07wrx 4pots brakes.
total weight was 33lbs for tire/wheel combo. |
