Transmission Throw Out Bearing Noise? video inside
I have a issue with the transmission possibly. I know its not the gears because nothing out of the ordinary. Gears shift smooth as butter.
I was driving and all of a sudden noticed a weird sound coming from the transmission area. I believe its the Throw Out Bearing or something based on research but not sure. When the clutch is pressed to the floor the noise stops, when I release the clutch the noise comes back as you can hear in the video. Its a Exedy Stage 1 Pressure Plate and TOB with a ACT Street Disk, and Gruppe-s flywheel. The ACT Disk was put in after a defect with the Exedy Disk occured. The TOB was reused when the ACT Disk was installed. Any input would be nice if any information could be provided on what it could possibly be. yup that sounds like a throw bearing to me. I had mine replaced twice from subaru already and i only have 45K on the car. The first time was the day of my car pick up it was making a weird noise and even after they adjusted it, it continued to make that noise till 30K then subaru just replaced the whole clutch system and its all fine now.

How many miles (or I gues clutch engagements) does one usually have from the time of the noise starting to when the issue reaches critical mass. My TOB started making noise this weekend. Just ordered the kit but wont have time to work on it until next weekend and I still need to get around this week (about 400 miles or so).
Any thoughts? Thanks in advance. |

alright, i am having a similar problem to this and my noise sounds almost identical. the only differnce with mine is when the car is in neutral and i slowly let out the clutch i hear that knocking but once i let the clutch out all the way, still in neutral, it almost feels like the car is in gear and wants to pull and then it stalls. the car doesnt physically move anywhere, but you can feel that it wants too. im not trying to thread jack, its just that this thread has been dormant for a while and it seems like the OP has figured out his problem.

when you push the clutch pedal to the floor this is when the throwout bearing would be making noise if it had a problem.
I say you have a bent input shaft or a bent gear tooth in the trans. heres my trans with a bent input shaft. |

Sorry I never updated. I still havent messed with the car much since this happened. Been to busy to pull the transmission out and have it opened to see what it could be.
One thing I did do was drain the fluid, and it was super clean, with no shavings at all. So i could have just broke a tooth or something. Now since this has happened the car is stuck in reverse and wont go out of reverse, so something Tooth wise or something had to break and wedge itself in between causing it to get stuck. hopefully ill find out soon and ill post up |

Can't happen.
The noise could be almost anything. If it's stuck in reverse, there are a few options. I assume you inspected the shift linkage for any improperly installed parts, or any damage. It sounds like a bad TOB, but that is an AWFUL lot of noise. It MIGHT be a bad input shaft bearing. What kind of trans fluid are you using? I wouldn't be surprised if the trans has to come out to solve whatever it is. Phil Andrewtech Automotive |
