Default The Forester factor: an unexpected reason for limited BRZ / FR-S / 86 production

Over the years, I've made it a point to chat with Subaru of America's National Manager of Product Communications Dominick Infante whenever he and I coincide at an auto show press conference. This year in New York, he revealed an unexpected and surprising bit of information: the common belief that the entire Gunma Main Plant is building nothing but BRZs and its Toyota and Scion-badged siblings is not really true. It seems that Subaru's other carmaking plant, the Gunma Yajima facility, can't meet all the worldwide demand for the Subaru Forester. Thus, some Foresters are built on a line at Gunma Main. Further, some Impreza assembly is also earmarked for Gunma Main around March 2013.

All this could, theoretically, crimp FR-S / BRZ production. I delve further on the issue, along with possible ramifications and solutions in this piece I wrote for Kaizen Factor:

FHI had already announced the Main plant would begin producing Imprezas in 2013. But if it is already producing Foresters, then that is news.

The Main plant is about 25% larger than the Yajima plant, which currently produces Subaru's entire product line except for the BRZ and Tribeca (Legacy, Impreza, Forester, and Exiga). I find it hard to imagine that starting a new production line for Forester there would have any impact on BRZ/FR-S/86 production.

I was unaware that the Main Plant was that much larger than Yajima. Or, more accurately, I didn't really pay attention to the plant size (or Buildings Area) numbers that appeared in the FHI Domestic Facilities page. Thanks for pointing it out.

Was the Legacy 2.5GT that was sold in the US market made in Indiana? If so, Subaru could be making room at the this plant for either increasing production of the remaining Legacy and Outback models sold in the US, or for adding a new model.

LGT not being made won't really free up any production capacity in Indiana. However ending Tribeca production certainly would. Making the Impreza in Indiana is being looked at. Subaru wants to move as much as possible (even parts production) to the US to better take advantage of dollar/yen difference.

Great! I hope they're able to build as much here as possible. That's good both for Subaru and US consumers... keeps prices low, which keeps sales numbers high.

Don't forget the XV is going to be made there too which will muck things up as well.
