2016 WRX Premium speakers
I just picked up my WRX and tested the sound. It was horrible even after a Pioneer TS-WH500A Subwoofer was installed. If I change any of the following for my front and back speakers, will it be sound better? I personally like JL or Polk Audio. or I have to change the HU?

you need higher out put from the radio...sad to say changing the speakers doesnt give you anything but a "different sound" and maybe some better efficiency but you still will be lacking power to drive the speakers. i would argue that the voice coil assembly on the factory speakers are actually more efficient. look at adding the Alpine power pack or a dedicated amp to the radio, you will be much more pleased. the speakers in there actually arent all that bad, just dont run any more than 50w per channel to them. without distortion they will last fine

I'd recommend replacing the factory Starlink with an aftermarket HU. You'd be amazed at what the stock speakers + the Pioneer sub can do with clean power and a little EQ

Speaker Selection
A lot of people love the polks, I have HK infinity rf series and pioneer ts40s that were all rather affordable and sound nice to my ears.
Really though your best bet is to go somewhere and listen to some speakers and see what you like, you don't have to buy them there but listening is the only way to be sure you'll be happy with your purchase. I do not have an amp yet and the factory HU is driving my setup as loud as I care to listen to it. The factory speakers are super cheap, their coils are smaller diameter than a quarter and the cones are rather flimsy. If you install an amp I'm confident they would be hilariously easy to roast. |

My setup:
Stock HU Image Dynamic CTX-65CS Components in front and the Coaxial in the back. PPI P900.5 amp and Audiocontrol LC6i LOC under my driver seat. Still planning on adding a 8-10' underseat sub on the passenger side and doing sound deadening... |

Thanks for the replies.
I can go with option 1: as phd12v mentioned with a Alpine power pack ($150) with stock speakers. Some people are saying the stock speakers are not that good. Option 2: add a amp Pioneer GM-D8604 ($230) with 100w x4, change the stock speakers to Kicker 40CS654 ($120 for 4) or other brands. (I personally like Polk or JL audio but more expensive) I dont mind paying ~$250 for superior sound on option 2 comparing to Subaru factory cost. One question, do I need to change my battery to accommodate this? (Future plan, adding a pioneer gps HU) Last edited by Arkin; 02-22-2016 at 06:15 PM. |

the stock speakers really aren't that bad, you can get away with a power pack on them. If you like to crank the knob though, you will need new ones.
I did test them before replacing them, they weren't too shabby with about 50 watts on them, yes I could get them to sound crappy, if I just hammered on them. but if you know what to listen for they really aren't that bad |

This is really a case of whether you just want more sound or want more sound AND quality. If you get an amp, I would probably skip the kickers and get better speakers. If you are on really on a budget, skip the rears and just pick up a set of components for the front.. Although coaxials aren't really expensive.
You don't need to upgrade your battery but BEWARE, this Subaru OEM battery is garbage. If you have a battery drain from anything audio related when you upgrade stuff, it will drain it very fast. |

upgrade your speakers
Unless you play music loud you'll get no real utility from an amp.
upgrade your speakers. I suggest picking tweeters with an inline crossover so you don't have to run a wire to the door (where the crossover will be for component speakers) and buy coaxial 2-ways for the door (fronts first, rears when you have the money) I have Pioneer tst110s in my factory tweeter location on custom sheet metal brackets made from plumbing straps (you can search this forum for other mounting options) you should do this first for 40$ its a nice improvement. install video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MUqoq195Clw In the doors I have infinity PR6502is in some lightly modified adapters ( Scosche SAGMEQ656) install video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wAhzQluJzxM |

I mounted my component xovers under my driver dash and on the passenger side mounted to the HVAC. You can get brackets from http://carstereoadapters.com/ (formerly known as subarudio). My amp is only 75x4 to my ID-65's but I find myself pumping the volume up to 20 so I might switch it out for a 100x4 or more amp.. but I got this 5 channel amp so I could add in a small sub later on.. decisions..
