Question How many people are going to put E85 in their non flex fuel cars?

I was watching ALMS on CBS before and they were playing a lot of ads about E85 and how good it is to use it. I noticed they never mentioned that E85 is only for E85 compatible/flex fuel cars, the American companies are pushing.

I also saw in a post on NASIOC saying this guy put some E85 into his 9-2x and it stopped his car from shaking.

I'm not sure if there are any bad effects of putting E85 into a non compatible car, does anyone know?
so how many people do you think will make the mistake?

If youre smart and patient, you can tune a car to run e85. Ive seriously considered it with my WRX if they ever put the pumps in around me. Helloooooooooo extra HP and Torque!

The downside is, its less efficient at burning than gasoline, so you have to add more fuel. This means you get worse gas mileage, but everywhere Ive seen it in SC lately, it was a full dollar cheaper than premium.

There are some vehicles listed as E85 compatible that aren't really advertised as it (unlike the GM SUVs). For example, the ancient 4.0L used by Ford is listed as E85 compatible and the Nissan 5.6L V8 is as well.

You have to do two things: 1.) Make sure your fuel system is made of plastic that won't get damaged by the E85 fuel, and 2.) Adjust the mixture. Flex-fuel cars meet both requirements. Regular cars may meet the first, but not the second.

Gas companies make more profit selling e85, and look environmentally friendly while doing it.

people who think E85 will save us have no concept of an energy balance.

the future is in algae that produces stuff to make biodiesel.

algae = simple, efficient and easy to grow.

the only problem is finding out how to condense its growth and supply it with enough CO2. In the lab trials they actually have to use dry ice to supply these bastards with enough CO2.

If someone can figure out how to get the system up and running, it will be doubly good for the environment.

I'd run e85 in a heart beat if I could get it. New injectors, new fuel pump, and I'd be running way more boost and timing than I could safely on pump gas.

Also american car companies are keeping their gas mileage figures within limits by producing many flex fuel vehicles and not changing other models. Why do you think only American companies are making so many flex fuel vehicles and making the engines standard like on the Tahoe 4X4.

there's a good article in Car and Driver that explains it.

Dougie. Elaborate more please.

1) You must make sure there are ABSOLUTELY NOTHING RUBBER in your fuel system, the entire thing. Plastic, steel, what have ya.... NO RUBBER. Alcohol hates rubber.

2) You must "adjust" the fuel mixture in old Carbeurated cars becaues there is no "compensation" for fuel trim's and such. (I.E. No computer). "Flex Fuel" cars have O2 sensors and PCM's (Powertrain Control Modules) that can have parameters wide enough to accept E85. Most cars not already programmed to be able to accommodate the higher octane fuel will not be able to adjust themselves to that extent, they'll only see "Too Rich! Too Rich!" and will misfire profusely.

In said carbeurated cars you must enrichen the mixture 15***37; .... and remove all non-alcohol friendly lines/hoses/tanks.

Read the E85 Fuel FAQ in the Engine Management & Tuning forum. Tons of good info.

Ahh, I love the people who act like they know what they're talking about. The stock fuel lines have their composition stamped right on them, and they won't deteriorate. The fuel pump is another story... Still being investigated.

All that needs to be changed is the fuel pump, injectors, and tune.

.
Most fuel system components have been components have been compatible since sometime in the 80's.

If anyone is actually interested in it, I would go do some research and NOT rely on this thread for info.
