Water Problem
Hey,
My hose water is coming from a well and has salt in it that sofens the water. This makes quite a mess of my paint and windows. It leaves water spots all over my cars. I wash my car in the shade and dry it right away. I have recently bought a filter from HomeDepot and converted it to fit on my hose. It hasn't really made a difference in the results. Does anyone know of a way to fix this or has had the same problem? Thanks for reading

Are you using a water softner filter? Just to clarify, water softner filters help with calcium and magnesium in the water and you actually "recharge" the filter with salt. So if the spots are from the salt, the filter isn't doing anything. Anyways, a read a few reviews online about water softner filters and they don't eliminate all water spots anyways, but the spots are easier to wipe off when drying.
I would use Optimum No Rinse as a remedy. Here is some info: http://www.autogeek.net/optimum-no-rinse.html |

Not all water softening systems soften ALL the water in the house. Many have hoses and/or kitchen sinks bypassed. Softened water doesn't taste great and isnt as good as normal water for cooking. Also, its a waste for hoses and such so it might not be softened water that is comming out of your hose.
The filter you are talking about that you got from HD is probably a black fliter? Thats for getting rid of chlorine, not minerals like calcium and magnesium. I had the same problem as you as my water is pretty hard, I just made sure I got a good coat of wax on it and use the "flooding" method to do a final rinse and then try the car off by blotting large pools of water with an "absorber" and then do a final dry with a microfiber drying towel. Works great!. you can always follow up with a quick detailer as they will get rid of water spots and help to add a bit of shine to the finish. |

I filter i got from HD filters our sediments. I use the method of flooding the paint to finnish off the wash for the same reason and also leaves less water on the car. My paint is waxed and sealed. I use a spray wax (Quick Detailer) every time I wash because these marks are left. They come off but as soon as the paint hits the sun I see all them again. I want to fix this problem before i give it a full correction otherwise my work will be pointless in two months.

Sediment filters are for catching larger particles like fine clay, sand, etc. Soft water treatment (like what you have) helps replace the magnesium and calcium ions with sodium ones.
Having said that, I'm far from an expert on the subject but I would not rule out the possibility that your water might still be relatively "hard" even with the current treatment. ...perhaps it needs to be adjusted? There is also the possibility your current media is being overwhelmed (i.e. too small/inefficient for flow (gpm)/ pressure (psi) you're trying to push through it). In either case (IMO/IME), "soft water" is not a guaranteed "spotless" solution. RO and DI filtration can be a different story however. Personally, I use a DI system from CRSpotless with sediment and soft water pre-filtration for washing my cars and windows on my home. |
