What's a super cheap, reliable bike you would buy just for cardio and excercise? Used is better, age doesn't matter as long as it isn't a pile of rolling rubbish. I've wanted a bike for a long time but I've come to the conclusion getting a nice one is far down on my financial priority list, so a cheap one is my only option for now.

^^ I have the Windsor Pro. It's a great bike. If Bing Cashback is working you can get 8% cashback + 3% CB from other rebate sites. Keep in mind that the bike comes 90% assembled and you'll have to attach both wheels, both derailleurs, front/rear rotors, handlebars, seat, etc. Basic hand tools are all that's required. The Windsor frame is made by Fuji, it's the same as the Fuji Tahoe that costs several hundred more.

the short answer, usn.shaft, is that if you're comfortable working on the bike (and learning about it -- way less complicated than a car, but really easy to overtorque and break stuff) buy the bikesdirect bike.

the rockhopper is nice, but if you're on a tight budget, there's not much difference if you can assemble and work on the bikesdirect bike. I think the dart on the bd bike is probably a slightly nicer fork, although neither is worth writing home about.

I'm very handy with tools (do all my own work on my cars and motorcycles) so assembling stuff isn't a problem for me. I just need it to be as cheap as possible while not being a complete turd on 2 wheels.

Also, besides the odd double post, my biggest concern is derailleurs(sp?) being crappy. Will any be fine for what I want, or do I want to go no less than....Sora's for example?

The Windsor is by far a better spec'd bike for much cheaper. The Sram x.5 is on the low end of the middle of the road stuff, but it's still better than the other bike, plus it's a 9sp drivetrain instead of the 8sp one. I had a bike with x.4 derailleurs and they worked fine, I almost can't tell the difference between the x.4 and the x.7 on my current bike.

Thanks for the replies, as long as bikesdirect doesn't try to rape me on the shipping to Alaska I'll probably go that route.

Disc brake help:

Looking to upgrade my Techcrap I/O disc brakes with Avid BBD/BB7s.

Can anyone put me onto what bracket I need to use them with a rock shox fork with 160 mm rotors?

The I/O's bolted right on with no bracket (160mm rotor), the BBD's look to require a spacer of some kind.

Thank you!

Derailleurs are simple mechanisms, what you get by going up in price is pretty much just more longevity through the use of better materials. Shifters are what matter.

BD is free shipping, but I'm not sure how much additional they charge for AK.

For $100 you can get front and rear BB7 with front 185mm including adapter brackets. You can either use existing cable levers/wires or buy some new ones for cheap. Jensenusa.com has this price, but pricepoint.com is cheap too.

Just finished re-building my old road bike. Pulled it apart, painted it, put it back together and added new wheels. Just finished yesterday so haven't ridden it more than around the block.

Can anyone recomend a comfortable seat for a roadbike? Even with the padded shorts, the seat I have now feels like I'm sitting on the end of a baseball bat.

Have any of you had issues with presta valves holding air? My Trek mountain bike has presta tubes and it seems I have to refill them every time I want to ride, and the set screws that hold the stems in place always loosen up.

Is this par for the presta course?

It may not be the seat, may be your position on the bike/seat.

If you really think it is your seat I'd go into a store that has some sort of programme for testing out seats.

Not really. Either you have a bad valve or a slow leak in your tube. Be careful when you fix flats, run your hand inside the tire to make sure you get everything/anything out so that you don't flat the new tube you put in.

Cool, I have to change both tubes, so I'll inspect for anything out of the ordinary.

This. Saddles very much come down to personal preferences as we're all shaped differently. What works great for some are agony for others.

I'm fortunate in that I learned that I'm Selle Italia Flite shaped early on in my cycling career.

The only thing wrong with the position is that my ass is on that god-aweful seat.

How does a typical testing programme work? I'd need to ride at least 10 to 15miles to know if it was better.

I hate presta valves, drill your rims and use schraders. Then you can get little chrome skulls or dice valve caps. Plus they are easier to slime.

This is the only one I have on my computer. Didn't come out quite as well as I had hoped, but it was a fun, pretty cheap project. And the new wheels are pretty sweet.

I have this one and it's amazingly comfy. http://www.specialized.com/us/en/bc/...enuItemId=9302

I think I paid $65 at an LBS that was having a sale.

I don't know about that specific saddle, but I am a fan of specialized saddles in general.

I really like the "fatass" 143 spesh saddles. I ran a toupe on my high end roadie and a phenom on my mtb. Both look incredibly painful but I can ride for days in either.
