Keyed?
So I found this on the side of my car:
Long story short, went to my friend's house and hung for a little bit to come back to find this on my passenger side. It is about 2 feet long and extends from the front of the passenger rear view mirror to 3 inches into the passenger back door. I didn't find out about it until I got home. Anyways, it doesn't seem like someone "keyed" my car because the scratch (or cut?) was way too fine for any key. It was either done with a razor blade or something extremely sharp and thin. I can actually use my finger nails and follow the groove because it is a deep cut. Since it is so thin, I'm not sure if I can see the bare metal or if it actually went down to the metal. I am wondering if this can be buffed out or should I have it professionally done? I know that if you buff something that you can feel with your finger nails is generally bad and you could potentially cause more damage. What do you guys think? Any help would be appreciated! And any suggestions on products or places that worked for them would help. Thanks!!

I've had the exact same type of damage. Hopefully someone in here can help you (and me) out.

Like you said, it depends on the depth. Have a body shop look at it, they should tell you whether you can buff it or not.

run your thumbnail across it. if it catches likely its not gonna buff out, you would have to take out to much clear coat. Just an fyi, if you have a low comprehensive deductible on your autopolicy you could claim it and it wont negatively effect your insurance.

people who key are retarded, i hate that ****. here let me key your car and make you go through a **** load of trouble while you don't even know who i am. It also pisses me off that it's just so pointless, if the guy did indeed key it, he's just sitting there living his normal life, not knowing whether or not you found the scratch yet.. ugh.. nerd rant

Keying is one of the most cowardly things to do to someone's car. This is why I hate people. I had a nice long key from my driver's side mirror to the rear door. I tried some cheap Turtle Wax scratch remover clear coat pen and it did the trick....for now.

Anyways, thanks for all the suggestions and input. I've took my car to a professional body shop that belongs to my friend. She said that they can try buffing it out but it definitely went into the paint. Most likely they have to do a professional repair. She said repainting the whole door is the best bet. I read online about how other people used Applied Colors (http://www.appliedcolors.com/scratchwizard/) to fix their deep scratches. Any suggestions in this type of repair? |

Thats such a crummy thing to do. I left a restaurant the other day and found some nice blue colored gauges in my rear bumper and black liquid dumped dumped on my pass. Side dpor handle. Dirtbags in my small town jealous that they cant afford a ten thousand dollar car because of their meth addiction. End rant.
I think those paint fixers are more for chips in paint more than deep scratches. Would it be able to penetrate such a thin, deep scratch? |

That is terrible. This prevents me from driving my car to ****ty places. Always got to keep an eye on your car. What's even worse is that the fact that this happened in a good neighborhood (Irvine, CA) which is known for the extremely low crime rates. I mean, every other car here is either a Lexus, BMW, or Benz yet this **** still happened.
I'm not sure if it will penetrate it. I will have the body shop take a look at at it and I may very possibly use my insurance since I have a really good insurance with a fairly low deductible and it won't affect my rates. Lets just hope it is over the price of the deductible... |

i went to the gym in a shopping area one day, very populated place with even security going around every 10 min. i parked far next to a lamp post so it shone right down on my car. anyways, i come back after like an hour or so and this came up. i don't have any enemies or suspects that would do it. i am one of the few who have a 84 supra in the area so if someone who despised me, they would've known it's my car. i asked security afterwards for the tape, and what do you know, the place i parked is out of reach. i mean this was probably some spiteful, immature person/people to not just scratch one side, but multiple and words. BEFORE: i did get it fixed after driving it a month with brown tape on it's side. i didn't want my japanese muscle ashamed with that word imprinted on her. AFTER: basically, went to a bodyshop and had them paint code it. sand. and blend. they did a great job and about $300 for both sides (keep in mind how big these are). yours wont be too bad. but i do suggest getting it professionally done. Good Luck! i never did get the hood fixed though. |

Dude. That's an AWESOME job!! I can't even tell it was there. I guess I have to find a body shop that can do that. Thanks for the tip! I think I will try that! |

I find it to beone of the most cowardly things to do. It also happened to me my first month of going off to college last year. Went to body shops around the town and all quoted me $850-1000 (due to metallic flakes?). The police said they would look into it and call me after I turned in the quotes. Guess what never happened?! Heh. Mine goes from the passenger door down along the rear quarter panel. Needless to say I parked in the complete a** end of the parking lot from then on out.

someone could have been carrying a bag and a zipper caught the side of your car ( i know cause i did that to my own car one time) or someone had their hands full of stuff the edge of something caught your car!

If it's down to the paint, it's best to just get it repainted. Once you take it in, maybe they can sand it down enough where they can shoot a fresh coat of clear and not stick you with a $1K bill for a full base/clear respray.
I hate that crap man, but like V8s said, maybe someone just brushed up against it with a purse or zipper.....hell, I brushed the ass rivet on my jeans against my car and scratched the crap out of it a few times... so, it's possible it wasn't a key job. Either way, sucks. |

one thing you can try before considering repainting it is try sanding it with a really really fine sandpaper and then try buffing it out
