Hahaha, so a thread for the middle age WRX'ers! For better or worse, I am in this group, so have gotten a kick out of reading this post. I remember right before I bought my 'Rex seeing how many salt and pepper guys were running around in 'em, not just tuner looking guys.

Anyway, I was in this conundrum when I got my exhaust, how many years ago. I wanted exactly the same thing, the right sound, but not anywhere near obnoxious and certainly no drone.

Finally settled on the APS 3" TBE with cat, based on I believe Unabomber's tests, where the APS was near the quietest. I ended up changing over to EL headers, because while I really liked the boxer sound, it droned at 3K. Installed EL headers to take out that drone.

Recently the cat has started to go, so I decided to changeover my exhaust, and am getting the Maddad Whisper as well (APS no longer available) The catback is here, unopened, but the downpipe (catted) I am waiting for Swaintech to send; scheduled to be done tax day. Can't wait to see (hear) how much quieter it is... So, APS will be up for sale soon...still have the straight pipe section without the cat...

IDC counter is a calculated counter, not a true SSM counter. It is calculated from IPW based on a formula that is not proven to be 100% proven. IMO, the jury is still out. Don't let the number fool you. I can tell you, the injectors have plenty of fuel left in them at stage2 loads. IIRC, I've seen reported that around 130 IDCs is where the injector is basically spraying continuously. You're not going to come near that number on stage 2.

The actual time when the injector is spraying the longest is right at redline, WOT, when you seen most amount of flow. This happens about 1% of the time. So, given what I just said, does it make sense to rip them out and shell out major money for something that really does not give you any extra safety?

my tuner knows they are maxxed out, and he has been tuning subes forever. its actually irrelevant to me, i am going with e85 and need larger injectors anyway. id rather spend the 500 for the injectors than 5 grand on a new motor..

Well, you're going with E85 so you do need them. But if you did not, I seriously question your need. Ask your tune how he knows your injector is too small. I'd really like to hear the assessment. Since someone has already written a good explanation, I will just refer to it:

http://www.igotasti.com/vBforum/show...ycle-explained

Pretty much explains what IDC is. Again, it's a calculated value from IPW and it's OK for it to be little over 100%. The number is just a reflection of the IPW in relation to the intake stroke. Given that the intake valve stays open well past BDC at high RPMs, the chance that injector is spraying on a closed valve is very small.

I don't know your tuner and I am sure he is great but don't use runtime as a measure of competence. The two are really not synonymous.

Good point. I forgot WRXs get lots of plastic under the hood these days. IIRC, the WRX TMIC does not hold up well to higher pressures. It's probably a good idea to upgrade it for stage 2.

Quick update: I ended up ditching the stock TB to IC hose for an AVO. I couldn't get it to seal, mostly due to it's short length. The AVO was actually a bit too long and I probably should've trimmed it. Instead I man handled it on until I was able to line up the IC bolts. No more air rushing noises and I got all my power back.
