Correct Knock Sensor for EJ20 + TEC3
Knock frequency is based on engine bore size, which for the EJ20 is 92mm/3.62in.
The knock sensor supplied with my TEC3 (which I'm assuming is the knock sensor sold by electromotive) gave pure crap response on my EJ20. Noise levels 50-70 centering around 3500 rpm, and then dropping to 15-20 at 7000 rpm - not at all what was actually happening. Spikes to 100 when there was definitely no audible knock, and zero response when there was definitely audible knock. I needed a GM knock sensor tuned/designed for an engine with a 3.62" bore size. (Tuned to sense knock at 6250 Hz) After researching it, I've found one. Borg Warner p/n 8009 or S8009 OE #'s 1103700 or 10456019 Buick 88-94 Cadillac 88-90 Chevy 88-92 Chev P/U 92-95 GMC 93-95 Oldsmobile 87-94 Pontiac 88-94 This knock sensor works just like you would expect a knock sensor to work. Noise levels up to 30 at 7000 rpm, increasing with a nice steady trend. Definitely senses actual knock.

The one included in the Vishnu TEC kit is also for the same car as the second OE part number you listed. The only difference was yours was for an auto and the Vishnu was for manual trans. Did you get a different response from the original one? Where are you mounting your knock sensor and to what torque specs?

I got crazy response from the original knock sensor. Do I need to elaborate on what I said in my first post? My knock sensor is mounted into a brass adapter, and the adapter replaces one of the engine mount bolts that threads into the block. I used the 'ol standard torque spec... Good'n'Tight. |

Ah, well I did indeed read your first post, but I was more interested in what your new knock sensor does? good'n'tight, eh? LOL I don't recall what motor, other than 5L (that narrows it down, but I won't make assumtions) chevy. Perhaps they mounted them differently or something. I always thought torque specs on a knock sensor were crucial.

I suppose the tightening torque would matter, I just hadn't thought about it before. I'll have to check into that, thanks!
As far as what my knock sensor does now, I get zero response until about 3500rpm (except when I knock, in which case there will definite response). Noise starts there, and climbs gradually. I usually see a response of about 25-30 at 6000-7200 rpm at 17.5psi. If I can hear a pink or knock, the response is usually around 80 or so. I have my knock sensor threshold set to 55. I use a retard rate of 2 degrees per engine function, with a 6 degree maximum retard. My rate of advance is after knock retard has occured is .25 degrees per engine function. Some people I've talked to recommend turning knock protection off above a certain RPM (usually 4000-5500, depending on who you talk to). My knock protection turns off at 8000RPM (so it never turns off). In one of my many calls to Russ at Electromotive, I asked (and he said he would) change to a knock threshold curve when WinTEC 3.10. comes out (which is now just a couple weeks away). I think we agreed on a 5 or 6 point curve. That way I could have a knock threshold curve of 25 from 0-3000 rpm, 40 at 3500 rpm, 50 at 4000 rpm, and 55 at 4500 rpm. Come to think of it, it'd be nice to also have rpm based curves for knock retard rate and max retard allowed. I think I'll call Electromotive tomorrow and see if it can still be squeezed in. |
