Default Too soon to trade in '02 OBS for ''05 Leg GT?

I've really enjoyed modding my OBS over the last 3 years, and still love scooting around the city in it. It just doesn't have the passing power for the highway, and all the mods make it not much fun for long cruises. We do have a great highway car in the family ('98 Volvo XC), but I'm beginning to outgrow the OBS. It often seems noisy cramped and rough as much as nimble and responsive. And the '05 Legacy GT LTD is tempting. Doesn't feel much bulkier to drive, more comfortable inside, and a lot more get up and go.

I'm not sure if the pleasure of having the new car now would outweigh the pain and expense of pulling off most of the OBS parts.

The real question you've got to ask is ....is it within your budget. If so it's never too soon to do a trade. Besides you are talking about a very different and new model compared to what was available when you bought your 02' model. It will definitely be a step up in power AND comfort. I've chastised some people that were trading in 05' cars for another 05'...because that is just plain stupidity. They either didn't do their research (I mean come on it's not like you didn't know about the OTHER 05' models) and/or are just prone to impulse buying which car dealers LOVE. If you don't mind the price tag on the new Legacies (including increased insurance, taxes and fuel costs, they are gas hogs)....if you've got the means....by all means....do it.

Thanks for all the advice. Quite right, there was no 2.5 turbo Subie in '02, so it isn't completely over the top to trade in. Affordability isn't a problem - I could get the Legacy for trade in plus cash.

I don't totally dislike my Subie, it's a sometimes love/hate thing. It would actually be more logical to trade in the older Volvo and get the Legacy, which duplicates it's highway cruising capabilities more than the OBS does. If my wife could be persuaded to part with "her" Volvo, it would be easy to have the Legacy from my point of view.

The most prudent thing would be to just keep our current cars until they die, or maybe use the trade-up cash to buy a used truck as a third vehicle. A Tundra or even an F150 is much better than a station wagon for hauling firewood, tossing in three bikes for a short drive to a some great family cycling areas, etc.

But I've test driven a Forester XT, an STi, and recently the Leg GT Ltd. All a lot more fun to drive than any of the more practical options under discussion.

Well, couldn't get an '05 Silver LGT MT Wagon. Now the rumour is the '06 Wagon only comes with auto
I've already put my exhaust back to stock. I miss the top end power, but am enjoying the ability to hear my stereo again and converse with passengers. Still loving the handling all my upgrades give.

I briefly looked at a Saab 9-2X. Very nice interior - Impreza familiarity inside with snappy looking two tone leather. An OK sunroof too. OK 17" wheels/rubber. A very attractive price.

I don't know why, but it wasn't amazingly stronger/faster than my OBS. Maybe a combo of the 2 liter turbo lag, heavier curb weight, plus heavier (rotational inertia) wheels. Also I've test driven several 2.5 turbo models (FXT, LGT, STI) and I've come to expect that kind of off the line oomph if I go to the effort and expense of trading in a perfectly adequate car.

Handling was adequate, and easily upgraded, maybe even using nothing but parts I already have (much lighter 17" wheels and tires, 20 mm rear sway bar, front and rear strut tower bars, STI V7 wagon suspension, STI Group N engine, tranny, and strut top mounts).

So now do I get the bargain Saab now and mod handling cheaply and power maybe expensively, or wait a bit and get an '06 WRX, (new or used), or wait for a used '05 LGT to come up. Or just forget about it
