Hankook RS2's 17/225 - 17/235 Difference?
Allright i am on the Hankook RS2's and i am looking at getting a jump in width.
Currently= 225/45/17 Looking at 235/40/17 I am on SSR GT2 17x7.5" wheels. I looked up the info while getting my car aligned 2 weeks ago they show tread width and section width. Obviously without mounting these to the car i wont know how much wider the tire really is. I am driving a wagon so the width is an issue for me . I am running 3.0 Neg camber front and 1.6 rear. So i will have a little more room than most people. Can anyone with "first hand knowledge" of going from the 225 to the 235 tell me how much wider these will be. Hopefully

a little off topic....but FYI the tire compound is different on certain sizes like 235/40/17. Most people won't know unless they go to their site cuz venders don't really mention it on their web sites.
http://www.hankooktireusa.com/product/Z212.pdf I sent an email asking why the treadwear was 200/A/A instead of 200/AA/A on certain sizes....and got this response " Our RS-2 Z212 tire is made in different rubber compounds in select sizes and those tires have a lower handling rating which is a lower wet handling rating. If you have further questions please contact me at the number listed below." anyway back on topic....if you're worried about rubbing there are people running 235 and more w/o problems. You might need to roll the fenders a bit though. There is a pretty long thread on that topic around somewhere. The 235/40 has a shorter sidewall which helps with clearance as well. |

Well isnt that odd? Why not just market the tire as something different then? At least in the sizes that are supposedly not very popular?
I wanted the jump to a 235/40 for one of the reasons you stated also. The sidewall Height and Stiffness.. I didnt feel it was really topic related so i left it out. As far as the different compound goes i wonder how noticeable it would be.. I guess i could always go back to the Falkens but for beating the crap out of a tire for a season the price cant be beat. I do 8 autocross's and as many track days as i can handle (schedule wise) throughout the year. I enjoy the tire more on the track than the local parking lot events. I was hoping a slightly wider version of the tire would improve things. Thanks Chris |

yeh i think the added width and better gearing (more than anything) would make a noticeable difference. I would have switched to 235/40 too if i stayed 17....but i sold my 17's and got 18's I wonder too if there is a noticeable difference in the compounds (probably more in the wet if anything....I didn't find them to be so good in wet braking or dry). I don't track / auto-x as often as i used to. So I ended up getting the falken fk-452 instead of rs2 in 225/40/18. I figure they should be able to hold up to 1-3 auto-x and maybe one track day a season. I'm not trying to be competitive I just like to improve on my driving skills amd have some fun

I would bet that ya would NEVER be able to tell which was what on the car unless ya looked or were told.
Too damned worried about the damn grass being green and trees bein wood. This is ridiculous. |

It is noticeable. I did the same switch as you with the RS2's. The 235/40's have visibly less sidewall than the 225/45's. It's not a lot, but I can definitely tell the difference. It was worth another "finger" of wheelwell gap- the 225/45's are a half inch taller. That being said, I much prefer my 235/40's. The difference in response and gearing is noticeable. They're wearing quite well, too... I was not aware of the compound difference. Interesting.
The 235/40's also have a minimum recommended wheel width of 8", but they work great on my 17x7.5 rotas. No squish. |

Well thanks .. I am glad someone could pipe in with what i was looking for..
Having a 2006 with gearing the way it is from the factory i want to give this a try. Uncle Scotty why? Why do you need to throw useless thoughts out there? If you are talking about the compound difference then yes i agree , you might not be able to tell. But as far as tire size is concerned i will argue it the other way.. |

and IMO, the 235/40 is too short for the '06 WRX.....got 'em on my car now---3rd set....a 245/40 on an 8" wheel would be a much better choice. I have 17x7.5's which are too small for a 245/40---and some 'wide' 235/40's...like the ones I have now------ and will review, here, shortly |

Uncle Scotty , Which brand of tire do you currently have? I'm curious ( a thirst for more knowledge i guess).. I completly agree that a 245/40 would be optimal. Can you tell us why you dont like the 235/40? Too stiff? I know that you really have to vary your pressures (more than normal) to get a different reaction out of a tire because of sidewall rigidity.
To be completly honest with everyone i would much rather run a RE01r than the Hankooks or Falkens but they are just too pricey for me. I love to spend money on my car and have spent a ton on tires in the past, i just learned that with dialing in the proper alignment / tire pressure adjustment i can get a good reaction from a "tad" lesser tire and save a bit of money in the process.. I tend to run 110***37; of what the car can handle on the track and probably 95% at an autocross. It seems to eat up tires quicker than most.. Thus the reason for staying with Hankook and going slightly wider. Last edited by dntouch; 02-02-2007 at 05:26 PM. |

It changes the gearing and he'd prefer taller gears because of the mean torque the 06 WRXs put out.
