Changed my oil yesterday at 10,078 mi using my new Hydro-turf oil extractor. That thing works great! It sucked out the 5+ quarts I put in 5,072 miles ago. This was my 3rd oil change and the longest I kept the oil in. I did the first two changes at 2K & 5K. When I poured the oil from the extractor into my other oil container, it was like pouring water from a pitcher. That's how thin it was so I'm going to keep doing 5K OCI. I ended up going under the car anyway to inspect stuff and you can't help but notice how the exhaust manifold is about less than an inch below the crankcase/oil pan. The oil temperature in these boxer engines got to be jacked up with a hot-plate setup like this. I wonder what the oil temps really are and if 0W-20 is too thin.

Yea, and don't forget the BRZ posts about SOA claiming that if you are burning 1 quart over 600 miles call a SOA dealership immedietly....so what does that tell ya?

Also....in the 2.5L engine, we have goine as long as topping off the oil around 7500 miles into a service while the car has about 65K miles on it and then some.

I only put in 1 quart as well....you guys are going thru it like it's water. "Something is WRONG!"

Check this out....

On the wave of record sales, Ferrari has offered an epic 7yr/unlimited mileage warranty. (Take that Hyundai!)

It makes sense all around. Ownership costs of a Ferrari are lower, so more purchase. The cars are properly maintained so Ferrari gets a reputation for reliability. The cars hold their value better, so they become a better buy, so more people buy Ferraris.

The service covers yearly (or every 12,500 miles) inspections, parts, and labor on anything defective. (If only they covered tires!)

Interesting. I had heard that you couldn't use oil extractors on the 2012+ Impreza because the bend in the dipstick tube was too sharp.

I guess that was misinformation. I was prepared to buy an extractor, but when I heard what I heard, i went with a Fumoto valve instead. Oh well.

Well, Ferraris are in a completely different league, and are priced high enough that Ferrari can afford to be "generous" with their warranties. I would be surprised if they didn't offer this. Can you imagine?

"Mr. Customer, you're about to buy a $150k car. But oil changes are not included, and will cost you $500 every time you need it done."

Really?

If you can afford the car, 500 oil change really isn't much

not to mention most of those cars are either driven hard on weekends or sit in a show room. I doubt they will see enough drive time to make that unlimited miles matter. I dont see alot if any on DD race events. Most are Porsches and lower end sports cars like Nissans and Hondas

I also saw somebody posting there was a mesh that would not let the extractor tube through. Things you read on the Internet. LOL

The reason I have not bought the extractor yet is; I do not necessarily want another thing to store in the garage. Plus, I am visualizing the labor needed for cleaning the extractor up after use; would not this negate the convenience of using the extractor in the first place?

Surely, one could just throw it in the corner of the garage and let it drip oil everywhere. But if anyone has a method of keeping everything convenient, fast, and clean; please share.

I didn't hear about that. If I did, I probably wouldn't have bought it either but the extractor tube has a very solid feel and it went down in there with no problem at all. Unlike the first two changes which took the entire 5 quart jug without having to add more, this time I had to buy an extra quart because I snaked the tube around and found oil that wasn't going through the drain hole for some reason. It's suppose to hold 5.3 qts so it definately got all the oil out.

I don't know where you guys saw this stuff at on the internet but I can tell you the extractor tube went down with ease. I'm going to change the oil in my van and truck this weekend. I'm especially looking forward to doing the van because I don't have to deal with the mess it makes with the drain plug being right over the undercarriage.

There isn't much labor at all to clean up after use. Obviously, you don't want to just throw it in the corner when you're done with it. I prop up the contain and extractor tube and let it drip out. After a few minutes, I pack it away back in the box.

Thank you very much for your feedback. I just ordered a Hydro-Turf Oil Extractor OIL01. I plan on taking the drain plug out after the first time I use the extractor to see how much more if any used oil will drain.

I have had my car in for problems a few times. Once soa said they'd send someone with a loaner and take my car for work, but then they never followed through. Soa just blow smoke...
Mastroi are going to start a consumption test at my 15k service, but I'm skeptical that anything will come of it as I'm not burning a quart in 1200mi, more like 2000mi. But it'll at least be documented. Idk how much mileage I wanna rack up on it though, as I'm thinking this thing needs to GO.

That will be a good test. I believe the OEM drain plug is long enough that it protrudes into the oil pan. This is acceptable, since the OEM drain plug is removed during an oil change.

The Fumoto valve stays in place during an oil change, so the length of the threaded part is shorter so that it won't protrude into the oil pan, thus allowing all oil to drain.

Or so I've heard. I should have compared the length of my OEM drain plug to the length of the Fumoto valve before I installed it, but I forgot to.

Your welcome. You know, I didn't even think about taking out the drain plug to see if any oil was left. After it pulled out a little over 5 quarts, I figured that was it. I had an extra crush washer too. Damn it! Oh well, I just have to find out next time but I will take the plug out afterwards on my other vehicles this weekend.

Mastroi? Is that a mechanic of yours? Definitely sounds like we're in the same boat. My low oil light came on again today, less than 2000 km from the last time Subaru topped off my low oil light. So it came on at 17300 km, and just now at 19000km. This is getting ridiculous. Subaru better do something about this or they will have lost a lifetime customer, and possibly others through word of mouth. I've always wanted a Subaru and liked their values, but this oil problem and them not doing anything about it is really turning me off from them.

I too will chime in. First oil light at 3500KM took to dealer, added oil and all good until yesterday at 7000km and you guessed it, oil light. Service Manager says, it's normal he asked did I check the oil level? My reply, this is my 5th Subaru, why would have ever checked the oil level, I have never burned oil before. He refers me to the owners manual section 11-7. So I decided to a full oil change and we will see if the trend continues. I may swap to the Amsoil as suggested earlier in this thread at 10K just to see if things improve. I would agree that this is nuts!!

If your oil light comes on more than once and you are not in the middle of an oil consumption test being requested by the dealer, something is very wrong with both the car and probably with you.

If your oil light came on already, why wouldn't you be checking and topping it off periodically?

These are the reasons I can come up with, is there one I didn't think of?

1) incredibly lazy
2) don't know how to read the dipstick or add oil
3) ignorant about the importance of oil to your engine
4) you leased the car and don't care about engine maintenance
5) You have already decided to dump the car, rather than deal with adding oil to the engine over time (thereby taking a huge financial loss now rather than pay for oil gradually over the life of the engine).

Sorry if your car is consuming oil, to not maintain the proper oil level in your engine when you know that it might be consuming oil is just not that bright.

My guess is that the answer is "None of the above." I'm sure that folks on this forum are caring enough, technical enough, and diligent enough to know the importance of motor oil. They are simply surprised and angry that they should need to add oil at all, since this isn't common or expected in a new car.

I pretty much go from one oil change to the next in both of my Hondas without checking the dipstick because I know they don't burn oil (they both have over 120k miles). My Impreza hasn't shown signs of burning oil either (with 3100 miles on the odometer), but because of reports on this forum, I still check it weekly just to make sure.

Throw in some Redline engine break in additive. Its a little thicker and might help your rings seat. Or you can do what numerous people on this site have decided to do and continue with doing the same thing and expect different results. Amsoil wont fix the problem.

I put some Break in additive at 3000 miles and during this summer i have not seen any loss. But i also didnt have a noticeable oil loss issue

For the record im at 6000+ and still reads at the top of the dip stick.

Here are the reasons that you post stuff like this that I can come up with

1) You like to argue with people
2) You have a superiority complex and love to "showcase" your "knowledge"
3) You blindly follow Subaru like a lemming
4) You work for Soa (lol )
5) You are a weak consaumer who doesn't excect a certain degree of quality, even with major purchases
6) You're so stupid, you think oil consumption should be ok for a brand new car.
7) You're offended that your shiny new car is being negatively spoken of on the net by other owners who aren't lucky enough to have one of the GOOD cars.

I agree that Subaru should come through and fix the cars that are burning oil.

However, even in a best case scenario where Subaru rebuilds their engine under warranty, there are many components in the current engine that will remain. Those components also require lubrication and cooling.

So even if Subaru comes back to fix the issue under warranty, those who refuse to top off their oil because (whatever reason, there is no good one not to be topping off the oil both prior to seeing the idiot light and definitely after seeing the idiot light for the first time) are not going to benefit much from their lack of basic maintenance.

But if you leased the car and don't give two poops, good for you. Otherwise the term idiot light applies. No one should see that low oil light come on twice -- unless the dealer is doing a consumption test and told you not to add oil.

79,

You claim to have mechanical knowledge and training, but want to argue with me that people should be seeing the low oil light coming on repeatedly, because, why exactly?

Oh, it's a new car so no one should have to check or top off their oil, even if they believe it is consuming oil?
