Default Probably the Biggest Project of aeion's Life | FORD MODEL A CONTENT | NOW RUNNING

About six months ago, my parents and I took ownership of my grandfather's 1931 Ford Model A. You're probably thinking "yeah, yeah, another goofball that's going to take some meh-condition Model A and make a rat rod/street rod thing out of it." Normally, you'd probably be right, but I'm going to lay down some statistics that will change things a little bit.

The story:

My grandfather bought this car as the second owner in 1967 when my father was just 14 years old. All those years ago when he bought the car, it only had 38,460 original miles. He drove it very little and had the motor rebuilt less than 100 miles before he put it away in his garage only to stay in the same spot for over 30 years. The previous owner had the car stored in his garage for an unknown amount of time as well. Needless to say, this car has seen more time in a garage than on the road.

Present day:

Here's the interesting part about the car. Right now, today, the car has 38,815.5 original miles on it. So, this car has seen less than 500 miles since 1967. Also, it has a "freshly" rebuilt motor .

Now, since it has been in a garage for so long, the tires feel like they're made of stone, the paint was EXTREMELY faded, and it will probably take some work to get it running again, but that's why I'm making this thread.

The project:

This car is completely original, fell into our ownership with plenty of extra parts, had several options, and has very little body damage for its age. The car came from Nebraska, so it had a moderate amount of surface oxidation and some surface rust with one small rust hole, but otherwise the body is in very good shape. We plan to keep it original and just like it is, just clean it up, get it operational and road worthy again, and just drive it and show it. We're not going to restore it, just revive it because it's got such low miles and has such a great story.

Now, on to the pictures...

The day that it came to Texas...

A service sticker from long, long ago

Original Ford tool kit

Misc. engine parts

I started working on the car three weeks ago. We're starting by getting the body looking good again.

Started with the top of the hood, the cowling behind the hood, and the passenger side door

Cleaned a window. The glass is absolutely PERFECT. It really is amazing how well it cleaned up.

All of the chrome bits are fantastic. Just some light surface scratching that should buff out with no problem.

Some interior pics from earlier today...

The headliner is flawless

And a shot of the motor

That's all that I have for now. If you want to see anything particular or have any questions about it, feel free to ask. Really excited to get it running and see what works and what doesn't.

Haha, come on down when it's done!

It's simpler than the Model T to drive, but you still have manual A/F mixture control, spark advance, and lever-type "cruise control"

Also, non-hydraulic brakes, button-rod-starter starting system, no power steering, windshield-tilt AC, and a button for the gas pedal.

It's all kinds of goofy

Good luck with this project and thanks for posting it up for all of us to enjoy! Hard to imagine this vehicle will be a hundred years old in the not too distant future. Can't foresee any vehicles presently made lasting that long.

It really is amazing how well this car has aged. The paint still looks pretty good for being 81 year old, brushed-on single stage type stuff. The chrome is unbelievably shiny, windows are perfect. The only thing that hasn't aged well is anything that was cloth. But we have some ideas for that.

Alright, so making this thread last night made me want to go work on it haha. So today I just decided to clean up the glass and see what we have there. Turns out we have a GEM.

Now if you look closely, you can see a little horizontal light colored mark...that is actually a small bubble in the glass. Upon further cleaning, I found many more bubbles in all of the windows. COOL!!
