Default People looking for work - whats the deal?

I have to admit I have always been suprised - and am currently suprised at people who are out of work and demand the same salary that they currently had before losing their job, particularly in this economy.

I interview people and they are out of work and they say "I cant work for less than X" and I'm like apparently you can because you are making nothing right now.

Even before this job market, I saw guys lose their jobs and run through their credit cards, 2nd mortgage, and retirement plans all because they wouldnt work for less than X.

can someone please explain this mentality?

It's a false sense of entitlement....and a lack of humility....and just dumb

I've got a friend who lost his job....he's gotten offers out the ass for big companies, and yet, he still hems and haws over the jobs because they aren't exactly what he's looking for.

Listen *******, I know you were the director of QA, but go get a ****ing job at WAWA to help pay bills.

A friend of mine is like this. He "can't" work for less than "x". He's always bitching about how desperate he is with his mortgage, CC, and other bills (he even ask to borrow money from me). Yet, he won't even look at anything other than an IT job (he's a system admin).

It's been no surprise to me that he's been out of work for at least 18 months.

there's a point in salary where you make more with unemployment.

Yup, I had a friend who stayed on unemployment b/c he made more money that way rather then finding another job.

I'm guessin everyone knows friends like this. I knew two that were out of work for many, many months at a time, even taking loans from their parents. WTF? I'd rather be schilling mozzerella sticks at the Friday's then go running back to my parents.

I understand you want to be free in case you have to go interview or whatever, but you can still find a part time job that is flexible enough to accomodate your interviewing needs. You can also work a night-time job.

yup. also, people aren't retarded. if they take a job at a bargain salary now, they've basically ****ed their earnings for YEARS, because they're always going to be behind what they "should" be making, if they didn't bend over and take it up the ass because the economy is bad. So if they can hold out for better pay, why not?

It all depends on your circumstances. Behind on the mortgage, running out of unemployment, can't feed the kids? Yeah, take that pay cut. Still got some backup savings, doing ok on unemployment, etc, etc, etc? Hold out for a job that pays what you think you're worth.

There's another problem you are not aware of. It the event someone takes a job that doesn't make as much as they want, they a few things are going to happen. The employee will be unhappy, unproductive, and will be shopping around for another job while on your payroll. The biggest problem, though, is his resume. Suppose he works for you at half the going rate and then finds another job in 3-6 months and jumps ship (or tries) then it appears to other prospective employers that he may leave them in short time as well. They often won't hire him for that reason - why spend all the money, time, and effort to train someone if they probably won't stick around, and is a slacker in the meanwhile?

It's well known among hiring managers to avoid anyone who has a string of short-term jobs.

This.

We are doing okay with my UE. Yes, I feel like a turd for being on it for so long, but thats my deal. Im not going to take a job that pays maybe 500 a week before taxes and bust my ass, when I can stay on the UE for 520 a week. I was making about 750 a week at my last job, and I wont go to work for under 600. Im willing to take a pay cut, but not a silly one.

Can you explain the mentality of an employer who is low balling interviewees because the economy is in the crapper? Are you looking for temporary help because these type of people sure as hell aren't going to stick around working for you.

My previous job was a massive pay cut, certainly considering the ******* who wound up being my manager. Hence why I implemented my scorch-the-Earth policy when I got my current job and left that ****hole.

Thats what I'm dealing with right now, and why I'm looking at 7 months of employment. I'm not making enough to support myself right now, and am just looking for about 9k more from my next job. I had an interview yesterday and they specifically asked me what I wanted (which I hate...especially without knowing anything about the range they were looking for) so we'll see how it works out I guess.

I do know what you're saying a bit though. At my last job in the UK, we were interviewing for my replacement, pay was 24k a year, and this guy comes in asking for 40k. He was lying about needing that much to stay in the country, but seriously, who has the balls to come into an interview and ask for double the wage?

oh im not offering them jobs, and I am certainly in no mood to hire some lazy self entitled ass. Most of them are laid off because they worked for bloated top heavy companies who now are cutting costs to stay in business. I have never even considered having to lay off an employee because of monetary distress

Then what is the point of this thread? You don't want to offer a job, they don't want to accept your job. Sounds like it all works out in the end.

I have heard from a few "professionals" not to get into the workforce right now because it will reduce future income.
maybe the same theory applies.

Because it may be years before they can get that better pay? Assuming they can get a good job at all with a huge gap in their resume. Meanwhile they may lose their car, house, etc ...

because maybe, and I'm just throwing this out there, the situation applies outside of my company, and as I mentioned in the final "paragraph" of the original post I am still curious as to the logic of that mentality.
