as you are driving, yes that is how it works. but I think he was talking about after a fillup, that always seems to be based upon MPG readout prior to fillup hence his now lower numbers coinciding with lower mpg

I love how one week, my display would say "490 km" after filling up, and then after the next fill-up, it says "660 km" (or vice versa).

Sorry you're not happy with your car. If there is something wrong with it why don't you take it to a dealer? |

About 50 of those 100 miles are freeway, the rest are highway with 50 - 65 mph speed limit. The average is dragged down by outliers (stoplights, etc.). I wasn't going 45 mph the whole time, I can tell you that. If I had to guess I'd say the mode of my "speed distribution" yesterday was just below 60. It was foggy so I was being cautious.
Anyway, I'm not trying to start an argument with you. I just like to put in my $0.02 in this doom and gloom mpg thread. |

The colder weather has been taking its toll on mpg.

My last tank was the lowest MPG ever, but it was also driven in sub-arctic conditions for the two weeks.
So if you drive fast, commute short distances with a cold engine, drive in bumper to bumper traffic, hammer the accelerator, or drive in antarctica you now are warned that the EPA estimates will be hard to achieve. But if you drive reasonably, in normal weather conditions, you can achieve or surpass those numbers. |

No sir in that case you are wrong. Just did a 230 mile round to Winchester, VA. Had the car on cruise 5 miles above the speed limit at most times. Speeds randed from 55-70 mph. I had just dropped to half a tank and was sitting at 250 miles... The rest of my driving will be stop and go sub-urban/short so the remaining tank will probably get me to 400-420. Which will put me somewhere around 33+ mpg I believe. So seriously enough of that safety nonsense.. These numbers are possible. You'll just get most of them on the highway. Any less than highway driving and you will see a huge dip(which is still unfortunate) but not the end of the world... I have yet to pull tank less than 23 mpg. This car is just not "efficient" as expected(or even rated IMO) at "short trips". And you CAN do it without driving like nancy. |

He hooked up his scanguage and pulled 36mpg at 60mph with his CVT Impreza (others have reported higher than this, but this number is within the EPA rating so we will go with his personal scan gauge). But the speed limits where he lives are higher than that, and he has stated that his time is worth more than the extra expense for the gas that driving faster costs him. Yet he complains that his mileage sucks, because his old corolla didn't suffer as much at higher speeds. You cannot reason with him. If you post proof that you achieve good mpg's, he will try to discredit it. A picture is worth more than all of his various theories and anything he writes. You can achieve the EPA numbers with a CVT or a 5Spd, but it all comes down to the driver and type of driving you do. If he drove a 5 speed, he would realize that the fault isnt the transmission, because on the highway the CVT turns a lower RPM than a 5 speed, so his high speed habit would actually yield him lower MPGs with a 5Speed than with his CVT. And, although I can in fact get over 8 mpg better in my other car that is rated exactly the same as the CVT Impreza, my position is not based on *my* driving, but on the comparison between real world Consumer Reports mpg and the EPA estimate that Subaru gave the EPA, vs other cars with the same real world mpg's from CR compared to their EPA estimates. Further, the comparison with the Corolla is not just based on high speeds. At 50 mph I get 13 mpg better with the Corolla. |
