Default MPGs are improving

MPGs are improving for me, this translated to 34.3 MPG hand calculated. 39MPH on the OBC with the AC running most of the time. The OBC was registering 100 miles left in this tank before I filled it up.

Through a 300 mile round trip with speeds varying from a crawl to 73 MPH, WOT passing/merging and the A/C on, my 5MT delivered 37.5 MPG on E10.

I'm driving a lot more than planned when I bought the car, but the miles have been cheap and fun.

Zero complaints here.

Well my mpg is going to take a 10% hit, the only stations I ever filled at quit selling 87 non-ethanol. Stupid government, if I have to fill up 10% more often that does nothing to lower our demands of foreign oil!

Good for you! Don't let the haters on the forum get to you. Some people are driving the impreza let a sports car and expecting epa numbers but bitching because they get mid to high 20s.

I am averaging 33 mpg since i started tracking last december ( approx 12000 miles)!

Figured I'd do a little update since I haven't read this thread in a while.

I now know with 0 wind on a highway trip I will be able to break 50 mpg.

After driving around town for a while though I couldn't keep it there, and it dropped to 48.3. It took a lot of babying and careful driving just to keep it this high in the city.

Finally, just to prove it wasn't just going downhill for a mile then taking the pictures...this was taken back in my driveway, after sucky town driving =/

48 mpg after 120 miles ~100 of them highway with 0 wind. ~60 mph

Fantastic, Xafen! Are you running E10 or straight gasoline?

Yep, my 48 mpg was 50 miles out, driving around 20, 50 back.

It takes a bit or work and luck to get that though lol; 40 is pretty easy to get if you don't go too fast or too hard on the gas, so long as you aren't using E10 unleaded.

Did you say, driving 20 mph? For the love of all things holy I couldn't do that. I totally would not have the patience for that.

So, you are telling me, you drove 20 mph for 25 miles and 25 miles back? So you wasted 1 hour 45 minutes to get 48 mpg!? Well, sir, you need a hobby.

The nice thing about the 5MT is you control the revs with your right hand rather than your right foot. I believe the paddle-equipped CVTs can do the same.

The 45.3 MPG I got by alternating between 0% and ~60% throttle on E10. Heavy throttle at low revs while climbing and in-gear coasting on the way down. This is better than I could achieve with cruise control on flat ground.

My sedan is a premium with a hitch and other extras, so it's not stripped by any means.

Nah, I drove to another town ~50 miles away, drove around that down for 20 miles, then drove back the 50 miles.

On the highway I kept it about 60-65. Around town driving was mostly 20-45 mph. And the 20 miles around town was doing various errands at different places...

I wouldn't say that at all. I've had 5 new cars I've tracked MPG on, the Impreza was by far the furthest off the EPA rating. I beat the EPA HWY number *once* in 22K miles of 90% highway driving, cruise control set around 65MPH - 70 MPG (Premium trim sedan). In other cars I can get EPA easily with reasonable driving. I drive the same roads at the same speed every day for ~10 years.

Also all of my data was hand checked and didn't rely on the dash computer which is very optimistic in my experience.

My Impreza was 36 MPG HWY, I switched to a Legacy rated 32 MPG HWY. With the Legacy I am only doing 1MPG (combined) worse in a much larger car, bigger engine, more comfortable, better handling/steering, and it can go up hills without breaking 4K RPMs. In Winter months, the Legacy actually gets slighter better MPG than the Impreza as well.

This is pretty classic "pulse and glide" hypermiling. The downside is that you normally end up varying your speed all over the place like Prius noob

That's where the hills come in. Heavy throttle to maintain speed on the way up, engine braking in 5th to maintain speed and shut off the injectors on the way down.

Just filled up, 404 miles, 12.8 gal, 31.6 mpg (car indicated 31.5). 25% city, heavy a/c useage. Well 87 non ethanol you will be missed!

In the name of science I filled up with 91 non ethanol, and will for the next 3 total tanks to see if it is worth the 15% cost premium, it wasn't over 87 non, but it might be over 87 w/ ethanol
