204k on my stock block 02 wrx, vf30 at 21 psi, 310awhp for the last 110k+. Blew up stock trans and straight cut ppgs before swapping to sti drivetrain. (In other words drivetrain maintenance is just as important and it's lack is just as expensive if not more as engine related stuff)
Pulled the engine running probably 30-50 miles before bearings spun, felt like it was vibrating more than normal.

okay sorry to jump in this conversation but i purchased a high mileage 2005 wrx for my first boosted car about a month ago. it has a srs cat back 3" exhaust and aluminum radiator. so far i have replaced both front cv shafts and power steering pump alos replaced right side valve cover gasket and plugs. i have a issue with it and i cannot figure it out. i get heavy vibration like crazy when shifting into 3rd and 4th gear also get the the vibration from when down shifting. the steering wheel vibrates along with it.

Ball joints? Trans Mount? Motor mounts? Any and all could be cause plus a bearing carrier in the trans might also cause vibrations thru the drive shaft. too vague to guess. Does it track right? any particular RPM issue? any noise associated with it?

havent changed any ball joints or mounts yet. i know the tail shaft bearing was replaced with one out of another wrx trans. track right? sorry new to some terms. and it usually doesnt do it in first i can launch with no vibration only does it when around 30mph or more. slightly vibrates from 5th to 4th but does alot into 3rd. i was thinking maybe clutch but idk. and seems to vibrate when building boost but it always feathers out. doesnt vibrate when crusing speeds only acceleration and down shifting in higher gears.

Sorry. Should have said is it tracking correctly or veering left or right. Usually a sign of worn ball joints or wheel bearings. If the car tracks well when you let go of wheel I would focus attention on trans. Especially the bearing carrier in the trans. If I remember correctly the 3/4 gear shaft carrier has a bearing on each end. One or both could have gone bad. when they go bad you get lots of vibration on loading the bearing like shifting up or down. Could be clutch but that should occur on every gear and be RPM dependent. Not just what gear your in. Look for a pic of a five speed WRX trans and you'll see how the shaft is supported in the trans box. Hope its not. If it is you should look for a good used one because rebuild is not worth the price. Cheaper to swap with a known good one.

Thanks. it tracks right slightly. if im driving in town the vibration isnt horrible its mostly when i get on the highway and get up to speed. ive found transmissions for under 1200 on car-part.com just trying not to think about it haha.

would that still be the problem that bearing carrier cause the vibration feathers out eventually in those gears mainly vibrates on acceleration and down shift. vibrates slightly from 5th to 4th

Absolutely. Have the rear tail shaft bearing checked before you spend any new money on this. If it was installed off center or cocked it would induce vibrations in the drive shaft. Also make sure no bolts on the drive shaft were left loose.

By the way, forgot to mention that when the carrier bearing is going bad in the trans the shifts up or down from 3/4 or 4/3 tend to become harder to synch up. You'll start banging gears into each other.

okay thanks for the information im gonna call the shop who did the bearing change tomorrow and see if i cant get them to check it out. im hoping its just the stupid output bearing. the car goes into gear just fine and like isaid the vibration is normally at higher speeds. feels like you dont have enough rpm.

Any of you guys using E85 long term? Trying to get an idea of how long the motor will last @ 140k with good compression?

My 07 Spec B is currently sitting at ~123k miles bone stock. Thinking about going stage 2 when it goes back on the road in November. Been driving the s2000 all summer.

Been well maintained and mechanic owned prior to me buying it. Compression test last fall when I bought it showed numbers all around 125 or so. Not sure if being 3200 feet above sea level would affect that. Doesn't use much oil and always has synthetic. Just heistant on going stage 2 since it's higher mileage. From reading this thread maybe I should just pull the trigger lol.

Amazingly my 02' Wagon has 254k on the original motor and Trans. with zero issues. Although it had never been modded before i bought it and it was dealer maintained and babied it's whole life. Saving up for a new motor, but for now I have full power and no smoke or any mechanical issues to speak of!

Just do it man. It's how the car should be from factory. It's pretty much removing all the restrictions that are required by law. Might be even better for your car than stock. So long as you don't abuse the piss out of her because of that extra power.

If all proper maint. have been done to a WRX with around 110-130k on the clock, what is the longevity of the motor. If i can find a WRX with that many miles is it "unsafe" to go to a Stage 2 with protune? How much more an i dangering the engine with that many miles vs a motor with 60-80k?

Sorry if this is a common question but iv been reading the FAQ and lurking the forums for a while, thanks in advance

I found a single owner 2002 wrx with 175,000 miles on it. The guy was older around 60 or so. He did the head gaskets and timing belt and also upgraded a rusted out cat back and installed a clutch and light flywheel. I have had the car for about two months now and other than some needed tlc it seems to run really good.

I'm in the same boat. I just bought a 04 wrx wagon from its original owner. It had 148k when I bought it in Sept it now has 150k. No issues, everything is tight, except for the fact that I have a rather pesky P0420 issue. It was originally a front 02 sensor issue, but after I installed that the code in now the P0420. Installing a rear 02 this weekend and if that doesn't work going with some non-foulers.

Will update

I have a 02 wrx vf30 stock internals. Engine never been removed. Heads are likely done and engine eats 1qt of oil a week but made it to 270k.

Default Another Data Point

Another Data Point --

2003 Sonic Yellow WRX Wagon, 2nd Owner, Dealer maintained until 156K, regular oil changes. Located in the rust belt (Rochester NY)

Driving style: carefully aggressive - I let the car warm up before getting on it, get off the clutch before on the gas, and let it cool down before shut-off. Said another way: I have run fast sweep for rallies in it, but at 189K it still has the original clutch. Brakes? Well those are a yearly maintenance item -- right?

Non-wear and tear items:

156K - recurring small vacuum leak code (never found it)
165K - new exhaust center pipe + flow master canister
170K - rear shocks
180K - new radiator
185K - new rear brake lines because old ones rusted (also rotors, pads while at it)
189K - spun a rod bearing, and there is just too much rust to bother putting a new motor in. :-(

Up until losing the motor, I was expecting to die of rust before having any major problems. Of course, YMMV.

Default 214 and going strong

I've had my first Subaru, 04 WRX wagon - no mods, for a little over a year and a half. It spent most of it's life in Vermont, and was not very well taken care of. The underside has some rust issues that I am addressing...(welding some parts, replacing some), but bottom line is that I have put 70k on her which puts her clock at 214,000 and I love the car. I am building another ej20 which I plan on putting in sometime in the next six months.

Figuring out what machine work to get done, what internals to use, etc. etc..

Awesome, fun, solid as a tank vehicle that I plan on having for quite some time!

Do it to it! My 2005 Wrx is about to hit 150k miles on original stock engine with Cobb intake/box/maf hose, Perrin turbo inlet, Samco tmic hoses, Cobb uppipe, Cobb downpipe and Cobb AP 93 oct stage 2 ots map. Has been stage 2 since about 50k miles. Zero problems with mine. Though I am a little concerned about swapping to a Sti vf34 turbo, injectors etc due to its age, mileage and the fact its been beaten on for so long lol. Stage 2 should be more than fine though.
