Old Acuras Infinitis and Lexuses are cheap now and don't break like 80's and 90's American luxury cars.
I'd be careful buying an old Acura. The auto transmission behind their V6 is problematic once it gets a bunch of miles on it. Ours completely self destructed at a stop light with 180K on it (3.5 RL).

Maybe the CL would be a better choice... but is that really a luxury car? Or maybe the Vigor. That had an I5 I think, which would be kinda cool.

+1 I think they are good looking cars. I was tempted to buy one back when we were shopping for a beater a few months ago, but I've had "never buy a Chrysler" pounded into my head so much that I couldn't pull the trigger on it. It was probably for the best.

It is RWD, fast enough with the 5m toyota inline 6 and gets decent gas mileage.

Also, it has spacious seats, floats over bumps, and If I fold the rear seats down flat there is SEVEN feet of room from the rear hatch to the back of the front seats. Talk about room to ****!

Of course, the downside is that it may be an issue finding one that is not a drift missile on some Toyota site nowadays.
Cressida's are really nice cars. Smooth, luxurious... yeah I'd buy one.

There's a Marauder at a lot down the street from me for $9998. It looked pretty good from 200 yards away.

It's not as big as some of the cars that you mentioned, but I would vote Toyota Avalon. I had a 96 Avalon with the TRD Supercharger and it was great. When I sold it, it had 230k miles and still ran great.

My Lincoln i got for $1300. It's been two years and the only things i've done to it are replace rusty rear brake lines which had to be done at a shop ($400), front brake rotors and pads ($180), and a pair of tires ($160).
So yes, it's entirely possible to get a luxo-barge for under $5k, it just takes a bit of searching.

The LS-400 is awesome and i would totally pick one up if the right example came along.
The Toyota Avalon is one i wasn't aware of before this thread and i'm pretty curious about it now.
The Cadillac STS looks pretty nice, i know it has a decent engine, but i dunno anything else about em.

Also, if the Phaeton was depreciated enough, i would totally be that idiot who buys it. Aside: anyone know if the Passats are any good?

Decent when they run, but I believe they're more prone to head gasket failures than Subie 2.5s and are twenty times the @#$%^#$ to work on.

Almost as annoying as a VW/Audi product.

I'm driving a '99 A6 Avant that I bought for $4500 a couple years ago, and it's been a great car. The 2.8's are known to go basically forever if you take care of them (this one has ~176k). It has front and rear heated seats, dual climate control, nice speakers and fully adjustable rich leather seating. Gets 20 mpg around town, but I don't have a long commute so I can deal with it. Typically I stay away from VAG products, but for the price I took a gamble and it's paid off.

I really like the old A6 Avants, but I had a bad experience with a new A4 Avant years ago and it turned me off of VAGs.

I dont think any VAG product compares to a Merc or BMW product for the same price unless you get into the specialty segment.

Its not the engine, though you can blow that up too.
It's just everything else, especially suspension, brakes, and various bushings, ball joints, etc.

The 1st gen X5 had the M62... the 2nd gen (current) does not.
