I used a light grey felt that matches the colour of the headliner.
1. I pulled out the speaker grates and pushed felt under the A pillar trim. Lots of felt, don't be shy, felt is cheap. 2. At the top of the A pillar trim where the headliner starts push small pieces of felt down from the headliner under the trim. Also put some felt between the door gasket and the trim. 3. Halfway down the A pillar, push a bit in between the gasket and the trim. 4. The gap between the grey A pillar plastic and the black dash plastic from the speak grate to the door. Push a doubled up piece of felt into the entire length of the gap. Before I did this the trim was noticeably loose, after it feels solid with virtually no play at all. N guarantees this will work for you but it eliminated all my rattles. Also it won't do anything if the speaker grates are rattling (mine weren't).

Which part rattles for you? In my car the part right under the radio that sits between the radio and heater/ac fan control knob rattles over any bump/. I have compared it to loose change rattling...that kinda noise. The tweeter covers in my car rattle too....i have tried just about everything....I even insulated the inside of the cover with foam tape but it still does it.

again, all methods just aim at keeping that A pillar cover from moving. i for a long time thought it was my tweeter being loose or that speaker grate, but in the end, due to the fine folks here, realized it was the A pillar cover. (another rattle can occur outside the car by the way...i can't recall how to describe it offhand, but if you look at the molding near the corner of the windshield you will find a trim piece that has some play. i stuffed some black foam tape in there too.) |

My rear hatch is the worst rattle. Its constant After 20k the rattles are really starting to get loud and annoying.
All four door cards have a ting-ing rattle. The seats are hopeless. Theres something rattling behind the gauge cluster. Oddly- the a-pillars stopped rattling on their own. I only get the occasional noises from them on crappy roads. |

I'm at 12k. Got some crappy roads near my house that I need to traverse pretty regularly.
Damn car sounds like it's about to fall apart every time I hit a bump. Hatch, doors, a pillars, that center display thing with the temperature and fuel economy and such... But whatever, it's not really a new car anymore. I got my impreza because I wanted a small, cheap hatch with awd, not because I want to be constantly bathed in luxury. It's still as practical and fun to drive as always, and that's what matters most to me. |

i sort of did. when i took my car in for service in december, i told the tech about it. amazingly, he listened very carefully and we both could hear something very faint. it wasn't the ideal temp/rough road for testing the phenomenon since the road was smooth and it was 48 oF outside.
nevertheless, he looked carefully into it for me and what he found was that while the dash assembly was bolted together tightly, there was play in one the inner brackets that allowed the dash to move going over bumps or when shaken. he was shocked to find this (and showed the other techs). to fix this issue, he inserted some washers to remove the play in this area in the innards of my dash/instrument cluster area. after this "fix" the sound seemed to have gone away when i encountered a few warm days in late december (i'm in CA). however, since then, when it was cold outside (30-35 oF), on occasion, i heard it faintly recurring. yet, beyond those cold temps, i have not found the sound to come back again even when it's hit 70-75 oF outside (on a few occasions). we'll see how this evolves in the spring when i get a bigger range of temperatures. at first blush, it seems that maybe the problem has been partially solved. for me, if it only occurs at cold temperatures (for CA), i could live with it since that would mean its only there occasionally. i'll report back if it comes up again. (if it came up in a repeatable way this spring/summer so that i could reproduce it in the presence of the dealer, i would consider having them look at it again) but it does seem at least better...for now...and as i noted previously: even if he didn't fix the rattle that most concerned me, i'm glad he removed a source for other possible rattles! (sorry for the long story/answer) |

You should see it pull up and you may even be able to grab with your other hand and pull up. Good luck, but it's pretty easy to do without damaging anything. Eric |

My next most annoying sound is a squeaking coming from the dash. The sound is coming more from the center and top part of dash. However, I have tried pressing on everything on the dash including the a-pillar trim and tweeter cover just in case and it doesn't get rid of the squeak. It sounds like it could be within the dash somewhere. Anyone have this problem? My next most annoying sound is a buzz from both front doors at the top nearest the B-pillars on either side when I have the sound on the stereo up. Its funny, I turn up the stereo to drown out the other sounds and then that creates new ones. |

I finally got rid of one dashboard rattle. A cd slid between the dash and the glasd. Not a long term fix but at least I have it isolated. sucks.

Has anyone figured out a solution for the drivers side knee airbag rattle? This is happening to my car now and it is driving me insane. I literally have to push against the piece while driving so it stops to avoid punching my hand through it. I have had it with this crappy interior and it's stupid rattles. It feels like there are rattles in every corner of this car. I never had this issue with my 06 impreza.

that removed the rattle similar to yours. unfortunately, since then i've developed a couple of new rattles deep in the dash/instrument panel. as usual, they are temperature dependent. i usually hear them early in the morning out of the "cool garage, but they go away after a few miles. i then have some random ones on hot days in the trip computer/clock portion of the dash. i may hit the dealer at some point, but it's hard to get the car to the dealer at the right moment to track down these intermittent rattles. |

Question for you guys with the rattles! Is the dealership refusing to fix the issue? I've read a few of you guys fixed the issue on your own but wouldn't it be the dealerships issue to have the problem solved? I ask because I'm currently looking at getting a 2014 but reading about all the rattling issues it's kinda deterring me away.

The dealer never refused to fix mine....but it was also audible to them. I think a lot of times the rattles cant be replicated when the car is brought to the dealer.

CsytmX, what nOOb said...
i think most (but not all) dealers (Subaru or otherwise) will put some effort into fixing the rattles IF they are replicable regularly. the problem is many rattles in this car, and others, are intermittent. they can't spend all day tracking down a problem they can't hear or replicate. if they can hear it in a test drive with you and it is persistent, most dealers will make the effort to try and fix it. in other words, they have the same problem we have in DYI rattle fixes: tracking them down! if they can't be tracked down, they can't be fixed. |

I have a terrible rattle/creaking noise coming from this panel in the middle to the right of the steering wheel. When the noise occurs if i press on it towards the panel to the right it will go away. It's almost like it's loose or there is too much of a gap. Its so annoying and I have no idea how to tighten it or if I should bother putting something in between it to make it go away. I took it to the dealer and they said they used to foam tape and insulated it but now it's even worse than before. |

I think this is the same issue I am having? I can't reach worth a damn behind that panel to even see anything let alone try and fix it. No idea what to do. The dealer seemed to put some foam tape in the part where the instrument cluster meets the panel but the noise is still there. If i push on the panel repeatedly you can hear the tick tick tick tick. I almost feel like crazy glueing this panel to the center dash to eliminate the play. Any idea anyone?? Last edited by n00b on demand; 10-04-2013 at 06:36 PM. |

I had a buzzy rattle that sounded like it was the return of my A-pillar rattle (mostly fixed with shims and foam as outlined above) but was instead a head fake in that I found it was either the map light housing or the headliner right behind or the combination. I could push the headliner up just in front (to the windshield side) or the light housing itself and get the buzz to go away. It only happened on certain road textures (rough, worn macadam as if driving over frozen granola on the roadbed) which, unfortunately, there is quite a bit of this type of road near my house north of Seattle.
Anyway, I folded a thin plastic shim and slid it between the map light housing and the headliner (again, toward the windshield side) and this eliminated the problem 90% of the time. The folded shim added additional pressure to the headliner and seemed to do the trick. Hope that is helpful to others and yes, I am afflicted by the "if it buzzes I am annoyed" outlook on car ownership - to the endless exasperation of my wife and kids. I am thinking of removing the map light housing at some point to see if I can make the fix permanent and get the noise fixed 100% of the time. Good luck. E |

Just to let everybody know, I took my 2013 into the dealer service department to replace the mesh grill(the plastic brackets holding the grill in had all broken) and I told them about the rattle/buzzing issue. They informed me that there's finally a TSB created for the issue. The fix involves some clips and foam tape.
They didn't fix mine because they are waiting on all the supplies to ship to the dealers. So I'd tell everybody having this issue or not, to contact their local service center and setup an appointment and hopefully this will address the problem. |
