Default Toyo Proxes 4 in the snow . . . better than I expected!

We just had our first decent snow storm in Denver this week--about a half a foot of the fluffy stuff-- and I'm pleased to say our new Toyo Proxes 4 did better than I expected. We also have a set of ContiExtremeContacts to compare them with, which we used all winter last year.
If Tirerack rates the ContiExtreme's as an 8.0 in the snow, then I'd honestly have to figure the Toyo's at about 7.4-7.7, somewhere in there.

The Toyo's pulled the car quite well through the loose snow on the first day, and later in the week over compacted snow with occasional icy spots, allowed me to drive with reasonable confidence and held good traction at speeds up to 25-30mph. 'Course the AWD helped some too. The ABS did come on a couple times when coming to a stop on certain icy corners, but come to think of it, so did the Conti's last year at those same locations.

Neither tire is a substitute for a true dedicated snow tire like a Nokian or Blizzak, but if you gotta make do with just one tire, either of these 2 all-seasons will get you through the winter if you drive cautiously, especially on the ice.

Just my first impression after 1 week on the snow, but gotta say the Toyo's look like one terrific all-around tire for the money.

I think a better question is, how cold was it?

My KDWS were pretty good in the snow when it was around 29 degrees or higher. You got into the lower 20s, teens, and single digits and it was like driving on hockey pucks.

Driving to work in the morning here in Denver the temps were usually in the low to upper teens--plus some wind chill in there too. A couple days were very cold, under 10 degrees. Things warmed up a little coming home at night--upper 20's low 30's.

The Toyo's did have a little more tendency to skid on ice than the Conti's, otherwise
pretty comparable.
