Default P0244 Code on stock (or so I thought) 2011 WRX

I just bought this car 2 days ago from a pretty reputable local Subaru dealership. Tonight, I was getting on the freeway and went WOT in third gear. I've had a stage 2 catless WRX before and when the throttle cut and I looked down and saw the check engine, I almost had flashbacks.

So my question: would it somehow be possible to throw a P0244 code on a stock downpipe? I want to be sure before I go into the dealership and throw a **** fit that told me it was stock. I looked under the hood and it has the shell around the downpipe like it's stock, I just down know if the previous owner had it gutted or not.

My friend recently got the same code in his completely stock 2008 Wrx. Its been a bit colder out, we attributed it to better air quality. Side has since gone away and no issues.

Not to say it isn't done, Im sure it is, but I haven't heard of anyone gutting their cats on 2008+ Wrx/STI's. If it has the stock Downpipe, Im willing to bet the cat is still there.

Just seems unusual to me. I cleared the code and brought it to the dealer and he said I needed to have the code for them to work on it. Went out on the freeway again and did the same thing and threw the code. On top of that, I've noticed there's been some sort of catless smell in the cabin at stop lights. But I've gone to the rear and the exhaust coming out there doesn't smell catless. Not sure if a leak could cause this...

the code will still be stored in the ecu as inactive. ive only had this po244 happen on my wrx a few times. it was always winding out 3rd gear. i had my tune adjusted and it is better now. your car isnt tuned at all? maybe its tuned and you dont know??

Might be. I took it back to the dealership and I'm hoping they can help me figure it out.

mine was caused by an overboost issue caused by a broken ebcs. I then put the stock one in and had it retuned and its been fine since

A P0244 on a bone stock car would be very rare indeed. Look for wrench marks on the downpipe bolts, that's usually a dead giveaway.

Just got back from the dealership. They actually replaced the solenoid which had my mind at ease... until I tested it out and threw the code yet again I'll take a look around the engine bay and see if I can find any signs around the downpipe. Thanks for everyone's suggestions and help.

Took a brief look at the car. There were some wrench marks on the dp, however I don't really have the time or resources today to investigate further into that. I did find that they removed the resonator on the midpipe. No way that would cause this though, correct?

Thats discomforting. I may have to take back my comments about nobody gutting cats anymore. If they put a ghetto autozone pipe in place of resonator, then who knows what else they may have done. Sorry buddy.

You will definitely need to investigate further. And perhaps look into a new exhaust.

OP I would shovel this back on the dealer as quickly and assertively as possible- looks like trouble.

i would return the car and buy a different one if you can, you are going to have problems with the car later on especially if it was not tuned for the mods it had previously and warranty issues as well. Also make sure that you have the stock intake on there and look for bolt wrench marks on there too. Also don't believe what the dealership says they have one thing on their mind is to make money and will say anything to 'please' the customer.

How exactly would I go about giving them the car back? Not sure if I can do that too easily here in California.

Unfortunately in CA, lemon law only applies to new cars with less than 18k on the odometer.

is modified exhaust illegal in California?

If so the dealership should not have been able to sell a car with a modified exhaust right?

A modified exhaust is illegal in California, however I haven't been able to find a law that says it can't be sold because of that. That plus the blanket "as is" phrase kind of screws me over.

They had an additional used wrx that I was leaning towards in stock that I'm going to see if I can swap this one out for due to all the issues I've had. They've been pretty helpful through all this so far so we'll see if they're going to be this helpful.

Just heard back from the dealership. He neglected to tell me this the day I brought it in but apparently the boost reading when I threw the code was about 13 psi. Unfortunately, I have no way of verifying this. Will be taking it in this afternoon and hoping for a fix.

Where does it say this in the manual? He gave me a bunch of information such as intake temperature, RPM, my speed, etc.

i think stock max boost for your car is about 13.9psi. that isnt overboosting then.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the boost taper off towards redline?

And to everyone saying shove the car back at the dealer or the likes, if it was that easy I would have by now. As of right now, the paperwork says the car was sold as is. I don't believe there is any sort of loophole around that. All I have is their word of mouth saying "the car was maintained perfectly, was stock, etc." Nothing was put in writing as far as that goes unfortunately. If anybody has any advice/experience on this, I'm all ears.

I'm in the process of hunting down the owner to see what was previously done on the car and from what I've heard it isn't good. Basically said he had a built motor. I'm seeing if I can confirm with the dealership what this guy said (in a round about way) and I guess I'm going to go from there.

As of right now, I haven't been able to get the car to throw the P0244 after I cleared it the last time. Just need to dig up some history on the car to find out what's been done to this thing.
