Default Up pipe broke, need help

Ok so I'm a noob and wanted advice on this issue. When I was installing (used) turbo on my bugeye I noticed that my invidia uppipe had cracked along the weld that holds the up pipe and flange for the turbo side. Can I just take this to a muffler shop and have it welded back together or better yet have an expierienced buddy at welding weld this for me. Thanks for any advice.

Yes but it should be TIG welded.

I've welded up several for myself and friends with a mig. Seems to work fine... Just grind the old weld out pretty good first

Remember to drill out the ends of the crack.

agreed, drill the crack at the ends, and TIG. Anything pre turbo I like to have the inside as clean as possible. I am more then willing to help if you want to ship it out to the east coast. Just offering.

First thanks for the replies, and it's stainless if I'm not mistaken. Also, is this something common that happens or more of a rare thing. Thanks for the offer bmw325ix. What do you mean by drilling out the cracks at the ends. Do you mean grinding out the break. Thanks Again

You are going to have to "v" the crack. But where the crack ends you should drill a 1/8" hole to prevent further cracking. Do this on both ends.

If its stainless(or steel for that matter) and an exhaust part going through heat cycles, TIG it. No real need to v the weld out unless you want it to look pretty. Start the weld a quarter inch before and end it a quarter inch past the end of the crack. Lay it in with a bit more heat than normal and use a 309 stainless rod.

Man sorry guys i should have explained myself a lot better. When I said that the up pipe had cracked I meant all the way around. Like all the weld that holds the up pipe to the flange that connects to the turbo.

In that case use the jagged edge to align the flange to the pipe. Tack it up at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o'clock. TIG it back together with more heat than normal using 309 fill rod without releaving the original weld.
