I guess to get the API icon on your oil you have to pay for the tests as well but not having it there doesn't mean you wouldn't pass the tests. kind of like organic food. sometimes it's just not worth the certification process.

do you have any information on why signature series didn't get the API cert?

i think because they sometimes change basestock providers and with the Group IV/V oils you can't do that w/o getting re-certified, also the Zinc content might be too high for the SN standards, but Amsoil does a lot of QC so I'm not worried.

one thing I have found when researching this today is that with Group I-III oils you can change basestocks w/o recertification, but with IV-V you can't. so the API does play favorites just a little to the oil that comes out of the ground.

The Amsoil site does have listings, as well as the site below:

0W-20 (ASM): API SN (Resource Conserving), SM…; ILSAC GF-5, GF-4…; ACEA A5/B5, A1/B1; GM 6094M; Chrysler MS-6395

I just read someone else saying this on a different forum.

Out of curiosity, has anyone tried G oil? Have heard some good things about it but never done much research. They offer a full synthetic 0w20.

Its a newer company, supposed to be 100% biodegradable oil I believe.

All oil is biodegradable, I just take the plug out and watch the oil return into the ground.

Just curious, at what mileage point did you switch to synthetic if you did at all? Appreciate the feedback.

Switch to synthetic? Most of us have never used anything else.

2012+ Imprezas are factory-filled with synthetic oil. Only a few people on this forum have put conventional oil in their cars and it was usually for experimental purposes due to oil consumption. The rest of us (I'd hope) are still running synthetic oil to this day. I personally ran Subaru Synthetic 0W-20 up to about 4K miles and then Castrol Edge Titanium 0W-20 up to 59K miles, now I am running Amsoil Signature 0W-20 and just hit 67K miles yesterday. My car has yet to consume any oil even with 7K oil drain intervals.

Not any oil at all? I mean, I've never seen the oil level light on my Impreza, but even I'm down 1/2 quart 5k miles after the last oil change.

Zero consumption. I put in 5.4 quarts(due to the over-sized M1-104 filter I use) in and I always fill up the empty containers after the oil change for disposal purposes. I just changed my oil this weekend and I filled up 5 bottles up to the 32 oz mark and one bottle just over the 8 oz mark(.25 qts) . If you take into account the few ounces in the filter then it puts me at the 5.4 qt mark after a 7K interval.

I will let you know how this next run goes as I am going to pull a sample at 7K miles and then base the oil drain off of the recommendation. I have never done an oil analysis on this car so I am excited to see how she is doing.

I've been running Penzoil plat 0W20 since after my first dealer change. I get it at Walmart. I buy my filters at Napa. Yesteday I picked up another and they brought out a smaller NAPA gold, turns out the NAPA lists a different filter for the Impreza 2.0 and the XV 2.0, the one listed for the XV is the one I have been using, bigger filter. They are a wix filter.

I usually put in a little over 5. I think just 5 quarts would be ok too without oil consumption.

I have always filled with 5.3 qts, and will continue to do so. With so many people concerned about oil consumption and low oil level indicators, I don't know why anyone would intentionally put in less than the full amount of oil.

that is odd, as you probably know XV's use the same filter as every other fb engine. I will check out the bigger filters at napa. thanks
I don't see why they would have different filters for the same engine, but thats parts stores for ya.

Because it comes in 5 quart jugs, and Subaru have switched the amount to 5.1, so most people figure its ok. It is, as you know synthetic. And being that 5 quarts is more than the engine in my fullsize truck holds, I think most figure its absolutely fine to just use the 5 quart jug. I mean, really- most 2 liter engines would require about half to two-thirds the amount of oil this engine takes.
But we are only talking a tenth of a quart.

So I took back my pennzoil PurePlus to walmart yesterday cause the one I got was opened - and the one I got was opened as well! I did check it at the store and it seemed to be factory sealed, but taking it home and trying it, it wasn't. I guess I should just twist and open every oil I buy while I'm at Walmart?

I give up, that was the only bottle they had there, and I can't stomach going back to Walmart any time soon.
