Default Fuel Surge Tank Project

I knew fuel cut around certain corners and fuel levels is a problem with our cars, and experienced it hardcore last track day. So I got a custom made fuel surge tank. Ill be connecting the current high flow intank pump to the top of it, then a fitting on the bottom will feed my external high flow pump. The return will now go into the top of the surge tank, and a third fitting on the TOP of the surge tank will go back to the stock tank.
Ill have pics up soon, just trying to mount it securely and not get it in the way of my (soon to come) Vbar. And Ill be using nice stainless line and earls fittings so this may not get done till end of the week

If anyone has any pics of their setups, go ahead and post.

edit: Now I have to wait for my rear V bar to come in before I mount this damn thing! grrrrrr

Sounds cool. Won't the in-tank pump be too high-pressure? The only reason you need the pressure is to feed the injectors. Seems to me you'd want a low-pressure, high-flow carburetor-type fuel pump to keep the surge tank full.

Well, Id like to just use a stock pump, but unless someone wants to give me a stock pump, Im not about to buy a new one. The current one should work fine. Its not necessarily the pump thats "high pressure", its a high flow 255lph. High pressure would be caused by the fpr. The only thing the extra fuel would do is get returned back into the main tank. So Im not concerned about it.

I FINALLY got all the parts this morning and got around to installing it. All thats left is I need some bolts to mount down the external fuel pump. After that Ill go take some corners and see how it works, no reason it shouldnt. On a side not I know my fuel pressure is off so Ill have to adjust that because of this new pump.

Pics as soon as someone lends me a camera

Killer! I'd love to see pics... I've been getting into fuel systems pretty hardcore lately, so it'll be good to see someone else putting effort towards it for once.

Its working pretty well, I took one familiar right hander twice today and had enough fuel flow to get the tail a little squirly without fuel cut

I have to wait until I see how it reacts at ZERO fuel levels

So far, only 2 little gripes.
1) fuel tank cover (not the fuel assembly piece, but the cover into the trunk), now has a big hole in it for the lines, so Im getting some fuel stink in the car, I need to find a way around this (new cap and sealed holes maybe?)

2) The external pump, is as loud as I expected, actually, louder. I can deal for now, maybe later I'll place it somewhere else with some dynamat under the mounting brackets, as most of the noise is vibration

Aye... running lines through the floor is going to be tough on my end as well. I had just decided that I am going to drill through the floor and use grommets to seal the hose through, then run some angle iron over the lines to protect it, and finally drop the bottom of the rear seat back in.

For the most part, everyone I've seen do a surge tank has put it in the trunk and left the seats up. Sounds like you put yours where the back seat was...? Either way, look for some grommets that'll seal up those hoses and you should be good to go. You can probably even make some that'll work if you feel like getting constructive.

Have you seen the STi fuel pump assembly? It's got a box at the pickup that keeps fuel in the vicinity, while the return line is routed directly into the box and actually sprayed over the pickup bag.

Of course, it's priced out of this world, but the basic design is interesting enough to garner my attention at duplicating.....

Fuel starvation has been the doom of our large event results for 2 yrs now......Time for it to be put to an end for good.

Can't you just keep your tank filled up?

Well, fuel=weight and keeping your tank over half tank all the time is sometimes hard... and yes, I've hit fuel cut at 3/8 tank before. :-/

How much is it and where'd you get it as well?

Still waiting to borrow a digicam

It'll work, but it'll never work as good as a surge tank. Having issues with the fuel system?

No problems, it works GREAT! I wish I had pics!
