STU Legal Motor Mounts
Well I had a great time at Atlanta Tour this weekend, BUT I managed to break a group N motor mount ( my first).
So, Is there a stronger/stiffer legal mount out there? I believe that there is not, but I'm hoping I missed something. Someone that I trust says I will just have to deal with replacing one a year... I have found several discussions of this but nothing newer than 09, with no positive outcomes.

Oh, crap, that sucks! Unfortunately, I don't know of anything that's as stiff as the Group N mounts but with more rubber.
Which one broke...? And congrats on 4th in Atlanta! (Not surprised at all that RC took 2nd in an "unfamiliar" car... ) |

Did you get to look at it already, Josh? It's definitely a motor mount?
Nice seeing again this weekend, and you drove great! I'm still pretty surprised I got past you and WVV. |

PM "Evil STI". He helped me out with an innovative design that is 100% STU legal. He may consider it proprietary, so I don't want to be the one to spill the beans.

I believe it is the drivers side. Thanks, neither am I although I was disappointed to drop to him and Karen... Quote:
You mentioned the tranny mount but if it was broke I think I would have heard it hitting the floor. I drove great!? Ok I did on Sat. but someone I know pulled back more than 8/10ths on Sun... Wonder who that might have been? Quote:
The other option I am considering is using the stock ones and pouring my own. |

Reviving the thread. My car broke another driver's side Group N motor mount yesterday. What are the best STU legal options available at this time that will last more than a year?

ST engine mount rules:
14.10 J. Any engine or transmission mount is allowed provided it attaches only to the original mounting points, does not relocate the engine/ transmission (other than incidental to changes in compliance material), and weighs no less than the OE mount. All components between the engine/transmission and the mounting structure are considered to be part of the mount assembly. Mounts that I've found so far: Beatrush - http://www.rallysportdirect.com/Beat...rce=GoogleBase Megan Racing (look like stock mounts) - http://www.frsport.com/Megan-Racing-...FQUFnQod5RAAyw Cusco mounts (need 04-05 mounting plates to fit 06+) - http://www.rallysportdirect.com/Cusc...smission-Mount Perrin - http://www.perrinperformance.com/p/2205 Torque Solution - http://www.torquesolution.com/Subaru.../ts-su-200.htm Time to get some weight measurements on the options... |

TiC should have a motor mount solution in time for this autox season. Give them a shout if it is urgent for some more info.

Anyone see an issue with scoring a set of Cuscos or something similar, and then just adding ballast to them (welded-on additions)? |

Its legal for seats to make minimum weight, so I dont see why not. Just make sure you dont melt the rubber/poly/delrin/secret sauce in the bushing.

And like Leafy said, you can add ballast to seats for minimum weight, so there is no reason you can't. Luckily you should be able to take the bushings out of the TiC mounts while welding on ballast or TiC can do it beforehand! |

The driver side mount will tear in half from extension during launch.

I had thought about wrapping a seatbelt around the mount, but I think I'll just find a proper fitting mount first

I just wrote a letter requesting a rule change to the SCCA SEB. Even if just the people in this thread sent one letter it would give them cause to take a hard look at the rule.
Copy of letter... "This pertains to 14.10 J. The rules read that replacement engine mounts must weigh no less than the OE mount. I understand the reason for the rule here, but this is a problem for myself and other Subaru owners. Subaru's are great cars, but their engine mounts suck. I have an 06 STI which came with the worst of them. It came with plastic liquid filled engine mounts. They break frequently under normal conditions so as you can imagine they're not even usuable for autocross. To spite being plastic they are very heavy too making any other mounts an illegal mod. Even Subaru's equipped with normal mounts that can legally go to group N mounts are having issues because they break too during autocross use. Better built aftermarket mounts tend be be a bit lighter so welding metal onto the mounts (as ballast) has been discussed to make them legal, but I feel that may pose both a reliability and safety issue. If there anything that can be done to the existing rule to legally accommodate beefier mounts it would greatly appreciated." This letter is for example purposes so there is no need to critique it OK. |

They wont make a change on that. In the fast track it will say that due to this rule recently going into effect the stac will not recommend this to the seb in order to promote rules stability.
Under the old rule most reasonable mounts were legal, as they had ~the same ratio of metal to non-metal as stock mounts. Unless a car had like all plastic mounts or something foolish like that. |
