After removing the two big plugs on the side I discovered two more O-rings:

And the other one:

Finally after removing the last moving part of the pump I discovered yet another large O-ring and two additional rubber seals that we probably won't get in any general O-ring shop:

As for the O-ring:

There is an oil seal on the axle just behind the pulley, but I didn't take it out so I have no measurement. I didn't see any actual bearing.

I haven't yet bought new O-rings, so I'm not going to make assumptions about the correct sizes. My plan is to take this pile of parts to a hydraulic shop and ask them nicely to find correct O-rings to seal it all up properly.

Now where's the fun in that? Just kidding. Good luck.

Thanks for the all the info in the thread guys. Recently started having some noise from my pump on start up and found the dreaded bubbles in the reservoir.

All I needed to get back up and running was a new o-ring on the inlet. I did have an issue with the dash 14 FEP though. After install, no amount of effort to completely get the air out of the system seemed to be working. Finally after seemingly getting most of it I decided to just run with it and see, but every time I took the wheel close to lock it would start having issues again.

Then I replaced the dash 14 with a 2.5 x 11 mm and the difference was immediate. Previously I'd worked the wheels lock to lock dozens of times trying to get the air out, but this time after just a few times I wasn't hearing air in the system. It's been running perfectly ever since. Unfortunately M-C only had the metric sizes in Buna-N.

Anyone else have issues with getting a dash 14 to seal the inlet? It's possible I made a mistake on install but the metric o-ring was definitely thicker. When I installed the dash 14 the inlet easily went back into place, but with the 2.5x11 it filled the gap well enough it was almost hard to slide the inlet back in its hole.

Well i use to have issues, where it would steam and cavitate. But now it just, get extremely large and difficult to drive quick. I am concerned, the real pump aspect might be bad. But i really don't know how these factors perform.

US owners manual says to put ATF in it.
If I remember correctly, the ATF holds up,to the vehicle-specific conditions better than power steering fluid (some vehicles are higher temp or pressure in the PS system than others). Don't take my word for it though.

So its been a month and i just noticed my pump is barelly leaking from the 2 halves which makes me wonder if dash 37 is indeed to thin. Will a 144 be the same o-ring but thicker?

Pretty close (see below). Let us know how it goes. Also, that's why the FEP might be a good choice. The clear coating makes it a bit bigger.

Yet another extremely well written and detailed DIY post. I'll be changing my pump on my 06 STi here sortly and I wanted to find a well put together post to use as a guide. Cadillac, I will be very greatful when I get this swap done and I'll post back up with the events of the upgrade.

Anyone know the part # for the longer bottom bolt that connects the p/s bracket to the block?

I did mine about this time last year. FEP on the two bigger rings, buna-n on the others. Still going well. I do seem to be losing fluid really slowly, but the pump is not whining or anything. Probably 12k to 15k miles.

Edit -Just realized that I posted exactly one day after you (same time). Crazy coincidence.

Lol. Thanks man. I just wanted to see how reliable changing the seals. I ordered the HBNR 70 seals. Checking to see if those seals are good.

I was able to get a 55mm bolt with a 1.25mm thread pitch for the lower right bracket bolt. Looks like all of the holes for the bracket were stripped to some degree. Getting longer bolts works, for now.

Pump is still leaking from the hex nut as I was not able to remove it to replace the o-ring. Any tips?

EDIT:

Well, it wasn't the hex nut from where the pump was leaking. It is leaking from the high pressure standoff, where the banjo bolt attaches. I was able to remove it with a deep socket and the o-ring was fine. I replaced it anyway. Bolted it back on the pump along with the banjo bolt and it is still leaking. Perhaps it's the crush washer?

i read through this entire thread and don't see anyone who had just swapped a remanufactured pump in (though there was one guy who got a dirty one from a local auto parts store).

anyone look into what gets changed in the rebuilt ones? anyone use a rebuilt one? do they come with warranties? weighing the options i have in rebuilding vs. swapping.

also, does anyone have part numbers for the auxiliary parts, like the return line that leaks often or the hard line with the banjo bolt?

also, for what it's worth, my PSP seems to whine when it's cold out. earlier, after the car had completely cooled off and it was still pretty cold (30F?) i turned the car on and experimented with listening to the pump while i did certain things. both turning the steering wheel and revving the motor seemed to make the noise louder (duh). interestingly enough, it seemed that i could also slightly modulate the noise by fiddling with the 90-degree fitting on top of the housing for the return line. the return hose is definitely stiff. fluid is generally dirty brown, though i recently added a little dexron 3 ATF. no super noticeable leaks (on the ground) but there is general wet crud around the pump area.

also interestingly enough, after the car was at normal operating temperature and it was a little warmer out (39F now), the pump isn't noisy at all.

aside from just now when everything felt fine, i have been getting intermittent steering wheel vibrations, varying in intensity. wheel also jitters a bit, again intermittently, if i turn it from side to side while stationary.

car has 105k on it now. had the 90k/timing belt service done about 7k miles ago. didn't change the PS fluid.

I am very confident that I've seen other threads with people who installed rebuilt ones and had them leak very soon after. They do have warranties, but do you really want to keep swapping pumps if they leak/whine? Now it's possible that the people posting those threads are the ones with problems, so maybe you'd be ok.

There's a bearing on the front of the pump that you can see through the holes in the pulley that I'll bet has black oily dirt-filled crud on it around the shaft, which could be slow leak of ATF out the front due to the bearing or oil seal being worn. Also, the ball bearings inside of the bearing may be worn so that could contribute to some of the noise. One easy o-ring to change is the one on top of the pump under the black plastic 90 degree fitting. Some people have luck with just changing that.

Thanks Dave. Any idea where to get replacement lines? I saw one guy got a replacement hard line but it leaked. The plastic nipple o-ring and rubber hose would be an easy swap, especially if I drain my fluid (to change it).

Also there were a crapload of people talking about how maybe this o-ring is better than that one/etc. Is the post #9 still the latest and greatest?

And if I want to just try swapping that top one real quick, which ring is that from the list?

I am in the process of trying to fix my power steering issues. Started with the easy stuff, worm clamps/top o-ring, but looks like I will be rebuilding the pump.

The top o-ring on the low pressure line is a dash 014. I went with post 9 rings; still need to grab the oil seal for the bearing, which I am failing to find the correct part number for at the moment.

There is old fluid caked on pretty much all parts of my pump

As far as I know, post 9 is still the latest and greatest list, HOWEVER, I can tell you that you will need an extra -014 (may be a -013) o-ring on the 2006 and I'm assuming 2007. I don't know about the 2005 pump (68cadillac's original write-up was on a 2004). If you were to look at the back of the pump, you would be able to tell if you need this extra one if you knew what you were looking for (see below).

I can't speak for what is best. I can only say what I know. FEP seems like it would be better, but I didn't want to pay so much for the small rings. Others have had trouble installing the small FEPs since they're much stiffer. I went with FEP on the 2 big ones and Buna-N on the others. So far so good for me a year later.

Showing the extra plumbing and o-ring

From the first rebuild by 68cadillac on a 2004

Now from my post. See the difference? You can see from the outside.

yeah, ok got it. haven't taken the pump off yet.

yesterday i did do SOME things however. i siphoned the fluid out of the reservoir, added new fluid, started the car, turned the wheel back and forth a lot and repeated for a total of 3 flushes/adds. i was using what is probably the worst siphon ever made so i decided to stop after 3. the fluid was noticeably cleaner...probably not perfect, but was out of daylight and not wasting my time with the POS siphon again.

i also changed the top o-ring as previously discussed.

after these two things, the pump is a LOT quieter. i also, so far, haven't really experienced much vibration, if at all. this morning was "only" 34F but the car was not groaning like a mf'er. going to drive around a bit more with these two simple things done and re-assess. i suspect that there are other leaks, whether its at the clamps or at the actual pump. i'd love to de-grease/clean the pump and area around it so i can monitor if and where fluid is coming out of there.
