Hey Scotty...
I'm curious. After all these years, how'd you figure out this formulation? Is it recommended just for our subies or will this concoction work in other mt vehicles (within reason of course)? MT |

Can Pennzoil Syncromesh be subsituted by another brands syncromesh or is there something special about the Pennzoil?

Pennzoil, Quaker State, Texaco, GM, and AC Delco "Synchromesh" are all the same fluid.
The fluid is actually manufactured by Pennzoil and Texaco for General Motors, and then badged according to whoever is contracted to resell it. Ben |

The scotty's cocktail worked for me!
Even the most shade tree mechanic can do it. Just, if you're a dumb rookie like myself, think before you put the car up on ramps that if you drain the tranny fluid, you're not driving it back down the ramps but rather pushing it off the ramps - which would up scraping the very underside of the front lip moreso than the ramps usually do. Its invisible but I still know its there. I'm small enough, I probably didn't even need to put the car up on the ramp, but didn't think of that until afterwards. A nice long adjustable wrench unscrewed the 21mm drain plug easily, and quickly, without mangeling the thing. I didn't do the rear diff because I didn't have the proper wrench for it, it looks as if I should go to subaru and buy new fill and drain plug bolts for the rear diff because they appear to be ****ty white metal thats softer than anything. Transmission shifts so differently, its not even like the same transmission anymore --- and I didn't even have grinds to begin with, just had to push the lever into gear harder than I should have had to, BEFORE the cocktail ---NOT NOW. |

...the easy one first......dunno, really----there is no reason that it shouldn't work for MT's that require the same kind of lube.....some MT's may take some weird junk that would not like the 'cocktail'......but I just don't know. YMMV.... ....ok....the hard(er) one.....As an FAA licensed A&P aircraft mechanic, I understand a little about lubrication and lubricants and why certain properties of lubrication are necessary in certain places and the issues that improper lubrication can cause.....the 5MT seemed to me to be failing due to shock loading(and abuse )...and since there is so much different junk in the same lube bath that needs different lubrication to work right..... Since the 5MT's were giving problems, I did a LOT of reading around the 'net.....I found reference to the Synchromesh and read all that jizz.....and the Shockproof was being used by lots of racing teams for MT's......and----well....another board member posted a question about the HypoyC and its use in the 5MT.....and after reading the MSDS and the spec sheet for IT........ Uncle had the cocktail plan Wonderwhatallthatinthetrannyallatthesametimewouldd o.....MMMMMMMMmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm..... |

I have about 2,000 miles on my 04RS with the cocktail. I noticed an immediate change in shifting right after i put the fluids in. First gear will now go in from a roll without much complaint. The best part, however, is reverse. Before, it would usually engage 50% of the time, now it is about 90% of the time (much smoother of course). Every gear feels much more smoother and less notchy than before.
My father and brother noticed a difference in the car without me even telling them I changed the fluid. It is much more pleasing to drive my car now. Scotty - you da man! |

Just wondering if there a difference between the STI tranny and the WRX tranny? Has any STI owners tried the mix yet?
Thanks in advance! |

The STi and the WRX trannies are two completely different transmissions. The answer is, yes, other STi owners have tried the mix. If you haven't searched the thread yet, I believe atleast a couple STi owners commented on the cocktail thus far. Basically, as the first posts above said, this cocktail should work for all subaru transmission and other car manufacturers transmissions that need the same lubricant requirements. |

It works 4 me
So here's the deal.
I read the whole thread and thought, I need to wait until the next 15,000 clicks to do the trans and diff oil change thing, because I change them both every 15,000 clicks. Truth is I've used straight redline, straight mobil1 and straight castrol hypoid C and the results are the same, seems all I'm doing is dumping dirty, expensive trans oils and the shifting's just not better. I did the cocktail yesterday and have driven the car 2 days and the shifting is just plain better. Certainly smoother and requires a lot less effort. Sliding into 1st is a breeze and I hear no complaints from the syncros or the gears. I've had that 4th gear grind and it wasn't better, but it had gotten no worse. I've yet to hear it and the shifting into any and all the gears is sweet. Bottom line, it works 4 me. Thanks Scotty, you're a good bartender. Rosco |

The ONLY fluid that should be used in the mechanical rear differential of an STi is the specified Subaru 90LS fluid. The Subaru 90LS fluid is a straight 90 weight, not a multigrade, and has an unusual appearance, odor, and formulation. It has a very specific additive package that allows the mechanical diff to operate properly. Synthetic aftermarket products that indicate that they are for "limited slip" applications are NOT appropriate for this differential. Apparently there are equivalent fluids in existence that will work, but none that I am aware of that are sold publicly in the US. Here is a PDF of the specific section of the '04 Impreza STi FSM, for reference: STi Differential Oil 322KB It states: Quote:

Yes - Torco and rear STi diff =
I've since have gone to the Suby Gear Oil LSD (most expensive) and straight Valvoline 75w/90 dino in the tranny. Car is again. Not sure if the Scotty cocktail is the best thing for the 6MT - I haven't seen too many STi owners post about its use (aside from one in this thread). Sounds like it rocks for the 5MT. |

I'm curious about the viscosity of this stuff, new and used. Are there any virgin and used oil analyses on "the cocktail"?

I just had to chime in...
I've been through several different gear oils over the life of my car. Following is a quick synopsis:
0-30K Stock gear lube - 1st gear crunch above 5 mph, all other shifts OK 30-60K Motul Gear 300 - started to run at Lime Rock, so I decided to go with synthetic - 1st gear about the same, other gears a little smoother 60-75K Castrol Synthetic - was going through a divorce and didn't have the facility, time, or ambition to change myself, so had dealer change - 1st gear about the same, cold shifts a bear, once warmed up about the same as stock gear lube 75-80K Neo RHD - The worst so far! - 1st gear crunch anything above a roll - 2nd gear required a decent tug - 4th gear crunch above 3000rpm (had to double clutch) - I surmise it was way too slippery for the synchros 80K (today) Scotty's Cocktail - immediate, and I mean immediate, difference - after letting trans fully warm up I was actually able to get into first ~20mph with a nudge, but no grinding!! - 4th gear grind completely gone all the way up to a redline shift and all other gears very smooth Another happy customer of Uncle Scotty's Cocktail. Thanks!!!! |

Yeah, i should have posted something earlier.
But, I just did the 60k check up on my 02 WRX. Redline 5-30 engine, 75-90 diff, and Uncle Scotty's in the trans. I was using mobil 1 before this...WOW what a difference. Even the guy that tuned my car yesterday was like, "what did you do to your trans? It's so smooth!" Thanks, you are now on my favorite uncle list ;-) |

....w 0 w.....do whatever ya want....but just make sure all the shockproof and all the synchromesh get poured in the tranny and then ya don't over fill when ya add the---insert last ingrediant here......it holds 3.7qt but unlss ya let it drain for a LONG time, it won't all come out .....so 1 qt shockproof and 1qt synchromesh leaves 1.7qt....so add 1.5qt of the----instert last ingrediant here.....and drive it around for a bit and check the level.....add more if necessary. .....soooooo.....didya get it all figured out, here..... |

another coctail love story:
I ran RP Maxgear in the tranny for almost 25k miles (changed every 10k) with no problems, and could shift into 1st easily at 15mph. For reasons not worth mentioning I changed to Valvoline 75W90 and almost immediately noticed harsh grinding into first (even from a complete stop), which drove me insane. So after hearing such good things about this coctail I gave it a shot. My voodo mix was GM synchromesh, RL lightweight shockproof, and Castrol Hypoy C. Results: better than new, no grinding, shifts easily into first while moving. Even better than the RP (which is "the devil" here on nasioc anyways). Cliff Notes: Scotty's tranny voodoo mix = |

Well, I went to 5 stores... Napa, 2 Autozones, 1 Kragen, Tognotti's... Could only find the Redline (tognotti's carrys it) and Autozone is out at BOTH stores of the syncromesh. Its pretty popular aparently.
So i'm going to try 1qt syncromesh (when it comes in) 2qt shockproof, the rest mobil 75w90... However, I am going to be installing a Helical front LSD, so i'm not sure what I should use with that if anything different. |
