I've played around with quite a few gear oils and regular gear oil (i.e. non-synthetic) has been the only oil that has really held up. Full synthetic is too hard on the synchro's and synchromesh simply can't withstand the heat from the front ring and pinion.

Interesting. Did you ever try the "uncle scotty" concoction? That is what I am using now. 1qt synchromesh, 1qt lightweight shockproof, rest 80w90 gear oil...

Please post results of the DCCD controller when you install it.

i have also swapped in a 6 speed USDM '05....

if you end up getting a new 6 speed with no stubs in the tranny all you have to do is pull them out of your 5 speed and plug them into the 6 speed...

bayley how come you never come to any SEMI meets man i would love to be able to talk to another 6 speed swapper........

update us on that dccd business....i have all the stock pieces but no motivation to hook them up.......

I might have met up with you at a few of the BW3 meet's if you've ever been. I usually try to get myself out there at least every other month or so. Last time I was there I drove out the old "smoke machine" (Datsun 260Z with small block chevy and a VERY leaky torque converter).

I was giving serious thought to making up ten or so of these controllers and seeing if the WRX community would be interested in these. Of course, I would like to test out the "Beta Parts" on my own vehicle before I make any promises, but if it works as planned I can easily rip out a few more. I've seen some real low tech home made DCCD controllers go for over $100 on Ebay. These boxes I'm using were designed to last a half a million hours in a heavy (semi) truck envornment. I don't think electrical reliability will be an issue.

Did you do this all by yourself? Was the 6-speed installed with a floor jack with a tranny adapter? I am considering doing this but I don't want to get crushed!

You really need two people to (safely) get the trans up into place. I've done the old 5 speed before solo, but the significantly heavier 6 speed really needs two pair of hands.

Also, I threw this little beauty together to help keep the transmission from rolling side to side.

Thanks! I've got one of these:

But I might get one of these if I do the swap:

I am usually working by myself but I could get more "social" and ask for help if I do ever get a 6-speed. Part of me is holding out for an entire STi engine and drive train swap, but that may be a pipe dream!

so how does the r160 hold up with the 6 spd?

i was thinking of doing a 6 spd swap but my totals for 6spspd, linkage, r180, driveshaft, labor were escalating to $6k+

So far, so good!

However, I do realize that the R160 and the OEM driveshaft are the next weakest link.

*When I break the R160, I'm going to seriously look into an R200 rather than an R180.

*It's not a matter of it, but when.

Only heard of it one other time and iirc it was out of a eclipse/talon? or svx?

1975 - 1978 Datsun 280Z's (most)

1979 - 1983 Datsun / Nissan 280ZX's (some)

1984 - 1989 300ZX'z (all)

1990 - 1996 300ZX's (non-turbo)

Check the gear Ratio's: Here

I've got about a couple 3.9 ratio R200's sitting in the shed somewhere out back from my Z car projects. Yes, it will require some serious custom fabrication on my part, but the cost will be a lot less than a (weaker) R180.

The only downside to R200's is that limited slip modules are far and few between. Typical cost to upgrade a R200 to LSD is about $750.

For that $$ you might as well just get a r180.

The guys down in puerto rico got up to 720 ft*lbs at the wheels on a stock USDM STi drivetrain and never had a problem with the r180. And only a handful off people will ever get to that level.

I sold a stock WRX with 6sp & R160. The buyers kid killed the R160 spider gears with a stock EJ205. So depending on how its driven...

I think some people are absolute ham-fists and can blow up anything. Granted the 5spd is weak, but I haven't had problems wiht mine yet and people swear 280 awhp will blow the snot outta it.

It always helps when you see your old parts being used by another enthusiast.

I can't tell you how many times I've pulled OEM radios out of cars (sound system install... old side hobby), sell them on Ebay for super cheap, only to see the same butt head who bought it try and sell the exact same radio for a 100% markup the following week.

Thanks again... although, if you would have sent it to me for free, I would have been under the magic $3000 mark!

...OK, so I still would have to shave $3 off somewhere else as well.
