do this too
i haven't replaced the water pump, but while you are in there, i would replace your timing belt and crank seal and check your oil pump. you will save yourself a lot of hassle, of having to go back in, as those are things that go bad often. getting the crank pulley off is a problem that many people run into. it helps to have two people and a breaker bar. put the car in 5th if its a manual and stomp on the brake, while the other person uses the breaker bar, did the trick for and came right off. good luck

Is your water pump leaking or is your car overheating?
DOHC are little more pain in the butt because of the extra cam gears and their tendency to want to spin. You have to remove the timing belt, and I think you have an interference running 2.5 liter so it's crucial not to get it "out of time." The water pump itself is easy. Go to www.endwrench.com for some useful tips on the timing belt and maybe even the water pump. Water Pump will run you around $88 for OEM IIRC, or you can find a generic one cheaper at a auto discount store such as Napa, Advance, Carquest, etc. -Charles- |

Not too tough. As ImprezaVA explained, you do need to remove the timing belt. Be sure to use a paint pen to make some alignment marks on it(the belt) before removing it. This is of course after you align the timing marks on the crank and cam sprockets.
The water pump gasket is very bend-able. Don't jerk around with it till you're ready to install it. The more you play with it the more it's not going to want to do what you need it to do. After you get the old pump off try this. Run 2-3 bolts through the new pump and put the gasket on over the bolts. Bring the whole thing to the block and by hand with a deepwell 10mm turn them in. Do not tighten any of them till you have all bolts started. Before you tighten them down you also want to make sure you did'nt drop the gasket behind the pump. Look from underneath and make sure. I believe the torque spec for those is 6-8 ft. lbs. Go around twice(clockwise I believe) and not in a star pattern. Use a torque wrench. I just had to help a friend repair some threads behind his oil pump because he did'nt think he needed to use a torque wrench. Compress belt tensioner and "pin" it. Reinstall belt and put tensioner back on. Double check alignment marks and pull pin on tensioner. Need any more, just ask. Good luck |

thanks for the help
thanks again for the help once it was torn down it wasnt that bad at all. The most difficult thing was keeping the cams in place, fortunately I had a friend at the dealer who hooked me up with a trick tool they use. Anyway thanks again.

Any way that friend could get me one of those tools, I know they're expensive but I don't care at all, I work at a shop so it would pay for itself. Please let me know.
Cheers, Joel |
