SteamSpeed's Project Domino: 2001 RS + V8 ej207 driveline
Welcome to SteamSpeed's project Domino! We are taking a 2001 RS coup that has been sitting a few years with a blow motor and an unfortunate turbo conversion and bringing it back to life with a JDM Version 8 STI drivetrain, a ton of work, and buckets of degreaser.
Q: Why start with the GC8 coup shell (technically a GM in the US market)? A: Simple, the GC8 coup is arguably the besting looking Subaru body style ever sold in the US. Q: Why a Version 8 STI powertrain? A: We feel the JDM EJ207 + 6-speed is a great fit for a lightweight track car to throw around. There are already a ton of threads out there that extol the virtues of the EJ207 for the uninitiated, so we won't get into that here. We went with the Version 8, because we need a shop car to test our twin-scroll stock location turbos. Also the version 8 comes with great heads stock. We are not acutally using the full version 8 driveline though. We are upgrading to 5x114 hubs, axles, etc. from a 2007 USDM STI. ....stay tuned, more to come....including pics. |

Very nice! Is this Sams car?
My dream is to buy a set of EJ207 big port heads. Have the machining do to run my usdm avcs sensors etc. Then ill be able to run my usdm 04 sti 32bit ecu and harness. I cant wait to see what you folks do. Ian, Last edited by rexworx; 01-24-2014 at 01:13 PM. |

This is what she looked like when I got her:
All in all, not a bad starting place. She did have a blown motor to start with, so oil was kind of every where. |

Anyone need a custom rotated turbo exhaust for a RS?

Next: the interior wiring loom. For swaps like this where you have a chassis that is incompatible with the engine, you need to merge a harness that matches the newer engine with harness from the old for the older body.

1x Walbro Fuel Pump 255Lph (pn GSS342) 1x Walbro Installation Kit Subaru WRX / STI 2002-2007 (pn 400-791) Tank swap: while you have everything out, it is probably not a bad idea to swap the RS' tank. They are not baffled like the WRX tanks that followed. Here is a WRX tank with a STI fuel pump assembly Last edited by SteamSpeed.com; 05-06-2014 at 02:00 AM. |

It looks like the two main choices are this cheaper Walbro or the Aeromotive 340 Stealth. Seems like the Walbro does the job but the 'stealth' allows more room for upgrades even though the name implies it's going to be more quiet? I'm kidding about the quiet thing, the car has straight 3' exhaust, I don't think there's any worry about a loud fuel pump. |

Right now I'm in the mid 300s at the wheels according to some conservative AWD dyno runs and the stock pump does fine until I try to pull hard in higher gears and then I get fuel cut. The rad setup looks nice, but is that full plate of aluminum for the fan shroud? Isn't it a little over-kill/heavy? |

Sounds like you could use a fuel system upgrade. My 92x is at 430 whp with a Walbro 255 and 850cc rebuilt injectors. This car has the Walbro 255 with ID 1000cc injectors. Our goal is about 400 whp+ for this car. We sell a ton of that setup. If you are interested, PM us a price. |

The Rear Is Coming Together
Part used in this post: * PM us if need these parts. We normally have them in stock.
1x Whiteline Rear Sway Bar 24mm Adjustable Subaru STI 2004-2007 (pn BSR37XZ) 1x Control arm - complete lower front & rear arm assembly (pn KTA123) 1x trailing arm rear bushing (W61383A) 1x trailing arm front bushing (W61381A) 1x Outrigger bushings (pn W91379) 1x rear diff bushing (W92835) 1x Perrin Subframe Lockdown Kit (PER1 PSP-SUS-525) It is fun to to figure out how to put things back together when parts come for several different years and models. Subarus are like Lego bricks...except when they are not. We got the tank back in. It is from a 2002 WRX, but it has a fuel pump assembly from a 2005 STI. We pressed out some old subframe and rear dif bushings and added some new Whiteline parts. We swapped the RS' old rear subframe for a JDM version 7 STI subframe that came complete with sway bars, lateral links, etc. Who knew that a JDM version 7 STI rear suspension looked like a 05 WRX's? Not me. Also the version 7's lateral links are longer that the RS'? Me neither. Not realizing that version 7 rear suspension looked like the 05 WRX and not the 05 STI, wanted to use USDM 05 STI style suspension parts, so I swapped out lateral links for Whiteline parts. This allowed me to use 05 USDM STI style endlinks from Perrin and swaybars from Whiteline. Next I wanted to go 114 hubs/bearings, so I have spindles and trailing arms from a 07 USDM STI. you are moving to 5x114.4 hubs, ideally you use GC8 style rear coilovers for the tophats, and 2005-2007 STI style front coilovers because you need the larger receiving bracket. |

Rear Brakes Are In!
The rear breaks are in! JDM STI Brembro 2-pot and 2007 USDM rotors for 5x114 are setup in the rear.
This is what it looks with wheel and tire combo with the corner loaded with the floor jack. Here is the side angle. It is a little too hella flush for my tastes, but remember the suspension hasn't actually been configured yet; still, I think we will be rolling this finder to the max to minimize rubbing. |

Front Subframe
Here is the front subframe all setup. It has a 2005 USDM STI rack and Whiteline swaybar and tie rod ends.
Now bolted up to the car shell. |

I am swapping in a V7 EJ207 to a 2000 RS coupe. I have the full V7 driveline with all of the subframes and mounts. This is a great writeup with awesome pictures! Great work! |

Labor Day Progress
Next we separated the engine from the transmission. Fun fact: you must undo the clutch's release leaver by removing it's shaft before the transmission and engine will separate (6MT only). This is basically how we took the car apart. Given that the car is on jackstands, and there isn't a lot of room to push the engine and tranny from underneath, it is safer to install them one at a time.
Next, we installed the control arms, and coilovers. We didn't install the wheel carrier today because we still needed to install the ball joint. We have new Whiteline upgrades, but needs the aluminum arm shims which still need to be pressed out. Once the wheel carries are in, we will have a rolling chassis again. Then we will be able to roll this baby out to power wash it clean. [update] We finished installing the wheel carriers, rotors, and brakes. Here it is with the wheel on to give you an idea. I also got a replacement for the cracked timing cover on the left side. While we were in there, we inspected all of the belts and they more or less looked nearly new. I have new belts and timing kit for this project, but I think I will save them for later or perhaps for one of our other cars. Also, we did a compression test, 130 on all cylinders. We have a nice clean version 8 ej207; thanks JDM Racing Motors! Part of me relishes the idea of doing a monster motor build, perhaps a 2.1 stroker, or perhaps bore out the block to use 100mm pistons and machine the heads, but the more practical part of me would feel sad breaking down a perfectly health motor. Besides, the version 8 should be built enough to run roughly 400 whp which should be fine if I run our STX 67 in twin scroll. If I go with our STX 71, I may be pushing it. In any case, I will rebuild the motor whenever it comes to that. Last edited by SteamSpeed.com; 06-10-2014 at 12:42 AM. |

Looking good. Both the 5mt and 6mt have the clutch pin though unless it's a push style fork.
