Hi everyone... I have a 2012 WRX sedan and noticed a bad vibration from the rear shelf as well. After tapping around everywhere and getting the vibration noise, I finally put a light pressure on the tab for what the OP has described as the "keyless module" where it sticks into the trunk and the vibration stopped. I jammed a small piece of automotive carpet into the hole next to the tab and it seems to have stopped the vibration -- the location is on the left side of the trunk about 8 inches to the right of the large square opening with the insulation in it, as shown in the attached photo. Not sure if this is a permanent fix, but it only took a few seconds to do compared to pulling the whole shelf apart, so might be something for others to try first.

i foamed the crap out my rear deck and noise has 80% stopped...i think the rest of the noise might be the both sections of the C pillar... going to check that tomorrow

I took out the whole shelf and c-pillars. I then used 1/4" or less foam tape and put on every part that might touch another piece of plastic, metal, wire, glass, etc. this got ride of the intermittent noises. However, I still had the constant creaking. I determined if you put something between the leather seat back and the rear shelf t stops. I bought really thick Air Conditioning foam that is about 3ft long by 4" wide. Works great and since it is dark gray you can't really see it from outside the rear window.
I love my car again! |

Those of you just using foam, what thickness are you using, and where can I pick it up? Jo-ann fabric or the like?

Also, to the OP - thanks for such a great write-up! Most of my rattles from the back are now gone - woohoo! The only rattle I was not able to fix was the buzzing coming from the rear seat belt reels. The center reel seemed to be the main problem, but all of them buzzed when I pounded on the rear deck. I couldn't find much with a search, but I did read a comment from GrimmSpeed that suggested popping off the plastic covers of the reels and visually inspecting them to see if there is anything loose that can be tightened down. |

I completely removed my center seat belt Cold day in hell when I'm having to lug 3 people in the back of my rex. Good thing too cause if you want to remove the center belt there's no going back cause you have to cut it in two places IIRC. One is the metal that holds the lower attachment point (2 buckle points attache to the same metal / 1 bolt) and the other is the belt.
Nice clean look. I should take a pic. |

I got a 12in sub that every time it would hit I had the annoying rattle. Here's what I did and this might be "ghetto" to some but it was free and works great....
Took the rear lid off(u all know how by now) took old bathe towel and cut it up and laid it out and cut to fit. Reassembled, no rattle now. |

I bought some foam pipe insulator, cut a strip out of it and stuffed it in there.

Any updates from people who dynamat'ed the whole rear shelf? What about matting the c-pilars? I am not trying to avoid doing it a cheap way, rather want to sound deaden most of the rear anyway.
Did any complications arise when matting the whole area? Are there certain locations I should avoid so that the shelf returns to it's place properly? Last edited by rex.effect; 05-09-2012 at 11:09 AM. Reason: Added more detail |

Omg!!!! I just found this thread!!!! I've had the car since may and those rattles kill me, I always have my daughter in the back seat trying to pin point the origin of the rattle while I'm driving!!!! Hahahah she's a trooper , I'm gonna call the dealer and see if they know how to fix it, since I have to go in for an oil change. If not. I'll follow the steps on this thread and hopefully fix it!!!!

Great write up! I had a constant rattle from Day 1 since I bought the car. Turned out to be the Keyless Module. Followed these steps, padded up with some felt and thicker double-sided tape (because that's what I had laying around) and I'm in heaven!

I've been attempting to track down the worst ****ing rattle in my '12 sedan... I've performed this tutorial twice already, I've stuffed more dense foam up under the rear deck lid as can be stuffed under a rear deck lid, and am still plagued by this creaking. It sounds like a tinny, higher pitched creak, not so much a vibration. Every little bump, side-ways motion, even louder than normal farts set the creaking off, and i can't take it anymore.
So I hired my roomate to ride in the rear to narrow down the cause, and I believe I've found the answer: the rear seat, namely the 2/3rd's side, is rubbing against the rear deck lid, causing the noise. I folded down the seats, and the sound isn't there. The smaller side in place, no sound. The bigger side: BAM! Annoying-as-**** creak returns. Now that I know the cause, time to figure out a solution. Could take it to the dealer, but I'm not going to take off work for this bull**** until all options are exhausted. |

Here is my fix: (might not be the right measurements, just for reference) http://www.homedepot.com/buy/frost-k...rip-ac42h.html Lay that between the back of the seat and the rear shelf, close the seats. That will put a nice cushioned barrier between and gets rid of the sound. Also, the dark gray color looks stock. |
