Carter Subaru and Accessport
I was wondering if anyone in the Seattle area has had trouble with Carter Subaru and an AP. I was thinking about purchasing the Cobb AP, but wanted to know if anyone had trouble with Carter and had claims denied? Any info is much appreciated, thanks!

From what I have read and exprienced it is hit or miss with most dealerships. I played it safe and waited till the i got closer to the end of my warranty before doing anything to my car. For example the bolt that holds my shift linkage up under the car fell out and allowed the linkage to bang up against my driveshaft, very scary noise. My car was stage 2 for maybe 3k miles when it happened. Towed it to the dealership and they tried to charge me 110 bucks for the bolt! They cared less about the intake and exhaust but denied my warranty stictly because the ECU had been tampered with via Cobb AP. I disputed it and with a simple question of how can my AP unscrew a bolt that the factory put in? I ended up not having to pay anything.
In short when it comes to claims if you can prove why your AP or aftermarket parts did not make a factory part fail, then you are good. |

just accept that if you tune you are most likely on the hook for anything powertrain related. if the bill is large enough I can nearly guarentee any dealership, be it forced by SoA or not, will dig into it far enough to see if the ecu's been tampered with.

Thanks! I'll probably get one and just bite the bullet if I run into trouble.

I thought when you flash a V2 or greater map with the AP it does a full backup and once restored (unmarried) it goes back to that exact same state. And if there was any question of the ECU being reset recently its easy enough to say it was running strange and someone told me to disconnect the battery for an hour to allow it to reset and see if that fixed it being easier to do than come into the dealership.
No need to flog me about what's morally write or wrong, just trying to ask about if the backup once restored goes back to a undetectable state. Last edited by Screwbal; 01-08-2014 at 11:39 PM. Reason: morals |

My understanding is that once the ECU has been flashed, a AP V2 does back up the stock map but it leaves a cookie trail that shows it has been tampered with. At the end of the day I think it just dealership hit or miss on whether or not they accept it.

Not only is this committing warranty fraud, but screws over every subaru customer. Suggestions like these are frowned upon on nasioc. Quote:
This. Check sum supposedly still keeps counting and is not effected by a "flash back to stock". |

Would an ECU related Recall also effect the Check Sum?

They can choose not to work on a car, but if you actually have a claim with Subaru, they have zero say. You deal with Subaru of America, not the 'small' business that is the individually owned dealership.

So how many engine replacement claims have you had? Cause said small business is who runs diagnostics for Subaru of America they make there decision off what that small business says I've had one engine replaced under warranty one said small business denied my claim saying my car was modified without even touching the car regional rep agreed and believed what they said. Another different said small business actually diagnosed my car and disproved previous dealers and regional reps claims that my car was modified. My warranty claim was approved by the second small business more so then some guy in an office back east or the Subaru of America regional rep I did not deal with Subaru of America the said small business who gained my loyalty and did there job correctly got my claim approved even after regional rep said no so I am pretty sure your statement is false but that is just me going off my experience and dealings with getting my engine replaced which Bruce Titus service did an amazing job of doing |

I can chime in with my personal experience. I won't go into great detail but I dealt with multiple failures on my 08 sti I had. The dealership can't see if the ecu has been flashed or not but if they send the ecu in to wherever they send it to, There they can see exactly whats been done to it. They sent the ecu in after the 3rd failure. Ringlands everytime.

If you uninstall a AP, they really can't tell it was ever there other than the ECU will show it was recently reset i.e. similar to unplugging the battery.
Their excuse that they "assume" a AP was used, because the ECU was recently reset wouldn't hold up in court either. |
